Five Angels In A Sports Bar

I came across this interesting collection of photos posted by a young lady from San Diego who was hanging out with her girlfriends at Nationals Sports Bar on October 1, 2006. They sort of tell a story of what happens when you run into five Angels players in a sports bar. She even captioned a few of the photos and describes an altercation between Mike Napoli and Jeff Mathis which I found a little frightening. Anyway here is her story in pictures.

She met Scot Shields there.

The Los Angeles Angels lose Scot Shields

The Angels have lost set-up man Scot Shields for the season due to knee surgery. Shields was pitching awful this season and maybe his bad knee was the cause. He pitched in 20 games (0 starts) for the Angels this season and he was 1-3 with 1 save, a 6.62 ERA and a [...]

Key Halos reliever to have surgery on knee

Angels' reliever Scot Shields will have season-ending surgery on Tuesday, manager Mike Scioscia said before the game against the San Diego Padres.

Shields, who was placed on the disabled list on May 27 for patella tendinitis, said rehab wasn't doing the trick and that the pain in his left knee was too much to bear. The decision to undergo the procedure was made last weekend when the Angels played the Detroit Tigers on the road.

"It's tough," Scioscia said.

Around the Halo 4/16/2009

Last night the Angels were blasted by the Mariners 11-3.The bullpen was hammered hard again. What was supposed to be one of the Angels strength this season, hasn't been thus far. Los Angeles currently has the best starters ERA in the league at 2.79 even without John Lackey, Ervin Santana and Kelvim Escobar. However the bullpen is carrying a very high 7.54 ERA. Angel relievers have given up 19 earned runs in 22 1/3 innings, the pen also leads the pitching staff in losses. Another disturbin...

Fantasy Draft Tonight

Fantasy draft tonight at Scot Shields house. He has a place just outside Detroit and with the day off we're going to get our teams together. We have a very competitive league so I've been doing my homework and thought I'd share a little. I've got some sleepers, but I'm going to keep them as sleepers until we draft. Don't need sneaks like Scot Shields or Mike Napoli seeing this and picking one of my guys in the draft. A couple thoughts - Peterson or Brady with the second pick? Our league is more of a passing league so I would go Brady. However, running backs are at a premium and Peterson is a stud. Got awfully tired of the Favre stuff, way overblown, but he 's Brett Favre and he can still sling it. You have to be able to live with the interceptions though. Hope not too many points deducted in your league for those. He could easily have 4 Tds one game and 4 picks the next. Top rookie - I think Darren McFadden is going to be strong. He is a beast and I like him busting on the scene this year. Unproven QBs like Tavaris Jackson make me hesitant to take their wideouts because you just never know what you are going to get. Look at Randy Moss and Oakland and in New England? Difference there is the QB play mostly. The 49ers have some shaky QB play, but I still think Vernon Davis is valuable because of his red zone chances. If he were a wide receiver, it would be different. It might even be better for him because the QB can use him as a safety valve with short passes and quick hits. That's it, I hope the fellas did their homework cuz I am coming out strong this year. Real strong.

Great Game, Great Win

I've said it before right here, but I just I think the whole vibe of the Yankee Stadium is fun. It's a fun place to pitch. It's always a challenge. It always feels like a playoff game every time you pitch here. That's fun. Facing Clemens added to it and so did Old Timers Day. I went outside and checked it out when they were introducing the old-timers. It's a special place, man. It's always fun to play here.

It was fun facing Clemens. It was kind of toe to toe. He pitched good and I had it going it on a little bit. My arm felt really good today and that was the best my breaking ball has felt this year. I showed it for a strike enough that they had to chase it when I didn't throw it for a strike. When you face the Yankees your focus has to be sharp regardless of who you're pitching against because their lineup so good. I was more concerned with getting those guys out than what Roger was doing. He was obviously pitching good and I couldn't give up too much. The extra innings got a little nerve wracking but Shields and Frankie got it going again. It was a great game to play in and a great game to win.

Jered Comes Through

Even though Jered has had a rough start to the season, nobody's been concerned about it. Every pitcher has some tough starts and we knew he would bounce back. Look what he did last night. He shut down the White Sox and they have a really good lineup. Jr. hit a homerun in the first and that got everyone's confidence up and really got us rolling. A lot of the time when you're starting, you kind of feel your way through the first couple of innings, trying to figure out what's working. By the second or third inning, you find your groove. That's when you could see it with Jered last night. He threw a lot of good changeups early and that's really key for him. He's got a lot of good pitches, but when he's got his change, it gets a lot of guys off balance.

He did a great job and so did Shields. You could tell early in the 7th when Shields came in that he hadn't been out there in a while. He got a couple of his pitches up, but corrected it quickly and started getting his pitches down in the zone. It was typical Shields.

No question it was a big win for us. These are the kind of teams we need to beat if we're going to get to where we want to go. Our expectations are high. We want to win a World Series and they have the same expectations which makes it was a good win for us. We'll try to get another one today.

Escobar is pitching and I'm charting all of his pitches. It's my turn. Usually when you're charting it will help you for your next start, but since we're playing Kansas City tomorrow and not Chicago again, it won't help me all that much. Charting Escobar is a tough job. He's got a lot of pitches.
