How Randy Couture bought a one-way ticket to retirement from Brock Lesnar

Whether they saw it live or on replay, or both, the entire world of MMA fans has seen Brock Lesnar knock down, and then brutally pound down, on Randy Couture at UFC 91 to become the new UFC heavyweight champion.

In shape, experienced and savvy at age 45, Randy Couture came in as the underdog against Brock Lesnar. I personally picked Couture to win because I felt his lateral mobility, hands and dirty boxing could trump Lesnar's size and power advantage.

But alas, Couture fell into the trap of trading and wrestling with Lesnar, and when you're 14 years older and 55 pounds lighter, then that's not going to work, especially against a monster and accomplished wrestler.

Don't fool yourselves, Randy Couture's loss to Brock Lesnar was as much about applying techniques as it was about age, and here's why Couture got his head smashed in exchange for a one-way ticket to retirement.

Brock Lesnar becomes the Manu Ginobili of MMA

If NBA player Manu Ginobili of the San Antonio Spurs was born to win, then UFC fighter and now UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar was born to annihilate. Using his rare savvy and spatial instincts, Manu became the only player ever to win a Euroleague title, NBA championship and Olympic gold medal; with a freakish combination of power, agility and size, Brock Lesnar has become the first fighter ever to win an NCAA heavyweight wrestling championship, WWE World Heavyweight Championship and UFC heavyweight title.

UFC 91 Preview : Brock Lesnar just not ready to get punched in the face (by Randy Couture)

I'm going against the grain to pick Randy Couture to not just win, but hand Brock Lesnar the beating of his life. As scary as he looks, Lesnar just is not prepared to get punched in the face, something he never has had to deal with in the cage, especially against someone of Couture's caliber.

Expect Couture to respect Lesnar's power early in the fight, but impose his strengths as the fight goes on. When Couture is totally warmed up, he will catch Lesnar along the fences and dirty box the crap out of him.

Specifics of my pre-fight analysis after the jump.

It's Now Or Never For Both Gonzaga And Hendricks

At this point it's tempting to cast Gabriel Gonzaga as Terry Malloy from "On The Waterfront," easy as it is to imagine him slumped in the back seat of a cab, lamenting life's unfulfilled promises to an old pal.

Can anybody translate, "I couldda been a contender," into Portuguese?
