UFC 91 Preview : Brock Lesnar just not ready to get punched in the face (by Randy Couture)

I'm going against the grain to pick Randy Couture to not just win, but hand Brock Lesnar the beating of his life. As scary as he looks, Lesnar just is not prepared to get punched in the face, something he never has had to deal with in the cage, especially against someone of Couture's caliber.

Expect Couture to respect Lesnar's power early in the fight, but impose his strengths as the fight goes on. When Couture is totally warmed up, he will catch Lesnar along the fences and dirty box the crap out of him.

Brock Lesnar Shows no Class in Victory

Brock Lesnar showed last night that he is a force to be reckoned with in the UFC Heavy Weight division. Lesnar man-handled a very tough Heath Herring for three rounds with a relentless ground and pound attack. That being said, Lesnar showed no class at all in the fight, and someone needs to remind him that this is not the WWE. For all the Kimbo Slice haters out there, you have never seen Slice show outright disrespect to his opponents or be anything but humble after one of his MMA wins. Lesnar however disrespected Herring throughout the fight and put on a great WWE performance during the Joe Rogan interview. On the clips from UFC.com of the post fight interview and press conference, never once did Lesnar credit Herring with being a tough competitor or give him a hats off of any kind.

Event by event coverage of Brock Lesnar being an A-hole:

1. Round one ends with Lesnar on top of Herring. Lesnar gets up and pushes Herring in the back.

2. Right before the bell sounds to end the fight, Lesnar starts pumping his fist in the air.

3. The fight ends and Lesnar gets up pointing at Herring and laughing in his face.

4. Lesnar acts like he is swinging a rope and lassoing Herring.

5. Lesnar acts like and idiot in the post fight interview with Joe Rogan:

Rogan: now coming into this sport...

(Lesnar jerks the mic from Rogan)

Lesnar: CAN YOU SEE ME NOW!!! CAN YOU SEE ME NOW!!!

Rogan: Give us your thoughts of where you feel you stand in the heavy weight division now.

Lesnar: I fell off the horse against Frank Mir and tonight I got on that stallion and rode it out of town baby!
        WHOO!!!

At this point I fully expected the John Ceda or HHH music to start playing.... or better yet, Lesnar's much older wife Sable, to jump in the cage and start stripping her clothes off.

Heath Herring recovering from injury, disappointment after loss to Brock Lesnar

by John Morgan on Aug 16, 2008 at 9:30 am ET
Heath Herring recovering from injury, disappointment after loss to Brock Lesnar After suffering a brutal pounding in a unanimous-decision loss to the massive Brock Lesnar (2-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at UFC 87, veteran Heath Herring (28-14 MMA, 2-3 UFC) was left nursing more than just his injuries.

Herring discussed with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) the disappointment and embarrassment he felt from being all but out of the fight after the very first punch.

"That overhand right -- that shocked the hell out of me," Herring admitted. "I didn't see it coming and I got caught with it. That definitely had an effect on the outcome of the fight."

Lesnar's heavy right hand dropped Herring and impaired the Texan's vision throughout the remainder of the contest.

"It hurt me pretty good," Herring said of the punch. "I wasn't able to see. Right at the beginning of the fight you're blind. How much does that affect you? I don't know. It's not good."

The extent of Herring's eye injury is still not clear. The 30-year-old said he is waiting on more information from his doctors before a course of action for recovery is determined.

"There's definitely some damage to the eye," Herring said. "But I think we're going to be OK. We're still seeing with the doctors what the final result's going to be on that."

The loss was especially disappointing for Herring due to the successful training camp he completed heading into the bout. The "Texas Crazy Horse" was in noticeably better condition than he has arrived in for previous fights.

"That's the worst part about the fight; I felt in great shape," Herring said. "I felt my training camp went well.

"You get caught early on and there's nothing you can do about it. You make do with the cards you're dealt sometimes. We got dealt some pretty bad ones early on. We tried to stay in the fight and do what we could do."

Lesnar's near-taunting celebration has been discussed frequently since Saturday night. Herring said he wasn't offended by the laughs and gestures.

"[Lesnar] is a pro wrestler," Herring said. "What do you expect? That's kind of his shtick. It's what he does. I figure that's what everybody expected from him."

Additionally -- despite rumors to the contrary -- Herring said there was no pre-fight clash between the two fighters.

"I don't know if [Lesnar] said something," Herring said. "I didn't really have any words with him before the bout. I've never even really met the guy.

"I've been around this sport for years. I've never really done any trash-talking or anything like that before a match. I don't know where that came from."

Herring also denied reports that he requested he not be forced to walk to the cage ahead of the hometown-hero Lesnar.

"I never even had a discussion with [the UFC] about anything," Herring insisted. "I'll be honest. You bringing that up is the first I've heard of it."

Herring said after the disappointment of the loss that he plans on taking a bit of time off to prepare himself mentally and physically for his next chance in the octagon.

"I've got to step back a little bit," Herring said. "I've got some other stuff kind of working on the backburner right now. We're going to go do some of that stuff and just see how everything pans out.

"I've got some acting possibilities. I'm going to try to do some acting a little bit.

"I'm trying to get back to training and do some other things with training.

"It's just disappointing when you kind of feel like you've done everything right and you get some bad luck early on. I've got to clean that out a little bit and get refocused. We'll be back to business before too long I imagine."

And once Herring does return, Lesnar will be on a list of targets for future opponents.

"We took the best [Lesnar] could give us for 15 minutes, and he couldn't finish it," Herring said. "I don't know what else he's going to bring to the table to finish me off.

"We took his best shot and went on from there. I'd love for him to take one of mine, and we'll see how it goes."

MMAMANIA has a Heath Herring Orbital Bone Update from UFC 87

MMAMania.com posted a great article below about Heath Herring and his vision problems after the Lesnar fight.

Just got off the phone with Heath "The Texas Crazy Horse" Herring. I wanted to follow up with him regarding a recent post on his Facebook page.

The post in question:

"What are fractures of the orbit? When one or more bones surrounding the eye are broken, the condition is called orbital fracture. The orbit is the bony structure around the eye. An orbital fracture usually occurs after some type of injury or a strike to the face. Depending on where the fracture is located, it can be associated with severe eye injury and damage."

Does this imply that Herring damaged his orbital bone in his August 9 fight with Brock Lesnar at UFC 87? It would seem so. It probably doesn't help that referee Dan Miragliotta seemed to have poked Herring in the eye before the fight even started!

Here's the story from Heath's perspective:

"Yeah, I don't know where all that came from. Right off the bat when I got caught with that right hand, obviously something hit my eye, but I think we're going to be okay with it. We've gone and talked to several doctors, so everything is going to be okay, I think."

So does this mean there is no orbital bone fracture? I was confused.

"Well it's not that I fractured it. I think it's going to repair itself, I think everything's going to be fine. There's nothing the doctors can do. The swelling's already gone down a lot. I heal quick, I'm real fortunate in that regard."

Speaking of that first punch, it clearly set the tone for the rest of the fight. From watching the fight, you'd think that punch rocked Herring enough to keep him cautious for the remainder of the fight. Perhaps it did. But it also didn't help matters that he was blinded in his one eye from the outset -- all thanks to that one punch.

He couldn't see a thing.

Viagra for Heath Herring! He didn't land a single punch on Brock Lesnar!

This is some serious stuff. We're not talking about the not-exactly-Miguel Cotto body shots that Heath Herring was tagging Brock Lesnar with while he was being smothered. I can't count the number of meaningful punches that Herring hit Lesnar with, because there were none. Nada. Z-E-R-O.

I first noticed this during the fight. Then I reviewed the fight footage again to make sure that what I saw was correct.

Georges St. Pierre is a sadist - Extreme UFC 87 Brainteaser

Fights are chaotic by nature, and there are usually numerous factors involved in determining the outcome of any given fight. At the same time, you can often identify the overriding factor that gives the victor a win.

Let's try to do that with the three headliner fights in UFC 87 :

1. Georges St. Pierre over Jon Fitch via unanimous decision : Superiority in every aspect

There is no other way to put this. Jon Fitch is a fine fighter, but Georges St. Pierre is simply on another level. When they were standing, St. Pierre looked like his boxing idol Marco Antonio Barrera when he punched and Cro Cop when he kicked. When they were wrestling, St. Pierre totally pinned Fitch underneath. When they were groundfighting, St. Pierre became the first person to pass Fitch's guard and escaped when he was caught underneath.

It got so bad that St. Pierre even tagged Fitch hard with a spinning backfist in the fifth round. The only thing missing was a knockout, which makes me wonder if Georges St. Pierre is a sadist.

2. Brock Lesnar over Heath Herring via unanimous decision : Physical superiority

3. Kenny Florian over Roger Huerta via unanimous decision : Discipline

All in all, three tales of sadistic beatings administered by fighters with overwhelmingly dominant strengths. Agree or disagree with my assessment, let your thoughts be known. After all, this is a brainteaser!
