The specific appeals of boxing and MMA : The synergy that Affliction-Golden Boy must create

Most people reading this are likely to have read the news report that Affliction and Golden Boy are partnering up to co-promote MMA and boxing events on the same card. To summarize the news, it goes something like this :

( Golden Boy and Affliction will partner 50-50 on at least four pay-per-view shows next year that will include boxing matches and MMA fights on the same card.

As part of its deal with Golden Boy, Affliction will produce a line of event T-shirts for Golden Boy fights to sell at retail locations and at the fight. The first fight it will make shirts for is the Dec. 6 match between Golden Boy boss Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao. In addition, Affliction will become the official apparel licensee for Ring Magazine, which Golden Boy bought last year. It unveiled several sample T-shirts featuring old covers of Ring magazine, including ones of Sugar Ray Robinson. )

Because there is surprisingly small overlap between the boxing and MMA fanbase, putting boxing and MMA fights on the same PPV is an iffy proposition. If they in fact decide to go through with the initial plan, both Golden Boy and Affliction would have to identify the basic appeal factors of boxing, MMA, their promotional aspects and put together a well-presented show in order to build a profitable venture.

Here is the breakdown.

UFC Debate with InGameNow

In spirit of keeping the debate going.

The lion's share of talent at the weight classes you mentioned in your article are in the UFC.

I addressed Lawler already the people he have beaten are not even top 10...Scott Smith former UFC drop out, Frank Trigg who got destroyed by GSP, Matt Hughes and many others while in the UFC, Paulo Filho is already under the WEC Banner which is owned by ZUFFA who also owns the UFC and is currently in the process of getting over depression issues before his final title defense in the WEC. He will then be moved to the UFC. The rumor with him is he was formally on steroids in Japan and that would explain while his fights over here have been less than impressive.

You may have me on Lindland I for some reason just do not ever get impressed by him, even at the latest Affliction PPV. I thought he was dominant but not overly blown away. Then again assuming Fedor doesn't grab the ropes in their match last year then he may have actually beat him.

You saw what happened with Cro Cop, Rameau Sokoudjou and Shogun Rua when they were all offered big money by the UFC. They came over and got blasted. At least Sokoudjou was able to squeeze out a win, but overall their record in the UFC was 1 - 5 after going 44-11-2 previously. On paper a lot of these guys look like superstars and then they come over and get killed and the UFC is stuck with them and their huge contracts.

Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonner was a landmark fight and put MMA on the map, but their second match was far from as epic. As much as the American Public does not want to see a one sided war then why do millions of people buy Ricky Hatton versus Flloyd Mayweather to watch one guy get completely trounced. I think in Boxing and MMA most of the time the title fights are usually one sided because there is always a favorite who is just plain better.

"Finally the Cote issue. It will be a five minute fight, one sided, Silva wins" Do you care about Sean Sherk taking on Tyson Griffin on the undercard for possible #1 contender at 155? Or Diego Sanchez fighting Thiago Alves for #1 contender at 170? Cause all of those great fights are on the card in addition to the one round if Silva wins he ties the record for most UFC fights won in a row at 8. Isn't that what makes champions pure dominance?

JENNA JAMISON'S BOYFRIEND SIGNS WITH AFFLICTION MMA

by The Prophet, The Savage Science
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_R9GzBAwdm2M/SJlNAkC6PEI/AAAAAAAAAIk/llSB3aJfXT0/s320/Jenna.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231297114238762050" />
Tito Ortiz, or as you EC readers know him better as "Jenna Jamison's Boy Toy", will sign with Affliction's MMA promotion in a deal to be announced in a matter of days, if not hours. You'll recall that Tito and UFC President Dana White like each other about as much as Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packer organization. The UFC has right of first refusal and while they could, in theory, match it just to piss off Tito and Affliction its doubtful based on The Dana's comment that he wouldn't match an offer for Tito were he getting "thirty bucks a fight".

This adds yet another big name to Affliction's already impressive roster of fighters including Josh Barnett, Andrei Arlovski (aka the dude that used to date the really hot Playboy Cyber Girl), my Oregon homeboy Matt Lindland, Renato "Babalu" Sobral, etc. What's hilarious is that nearly the entire Affliction roster consists of fighters who Dana White holds a grudge against for some reason, which is why so many top fighters weren't signed to the UFC in the first place. Also in Affliction's corner is the guy managed by "those crazy Russians" as Dana White subtly put it, Fedor Emelianenko who--by the way--also happens to be the best heavyweight MMA fighter on the planet, if not ever. Fedor has also gravy trained his brother aka the "Clint Howard of MMA", Aleksander Emelianenko, whose jailhouse tat of the grim reaper holding a baby (Aleks did time in Russia for armed robbery) might be the gnarliest ink in the entire tatted up sport.

As always, you can stay up to date with all of the legit MMA, boxing, pro wrestling, UFC, Affliction, roller derby, Mexican surf music, heavy metal, pinball and general mayhem over at the fight sport journalism DeathStar known as The Savage Science.

Tito Ortiz to sign with Affliction @ The Savage Science

For the porno world implications of Tito's new deal, check out MC D-Sheck's other fine website On 205th

And here are some shout outs...obviously, fight sport journalism rock stars of my stature don't work cheap and to help offset my LeBron James-like salary we've enlisted some sponsors.
Matt Lindland vs Vitor Belfort Likely for Affliction 2 for Title Belt

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_8sapMW_W6ok/SJI_TEwELrI/AAAAAAAAAjw/taUggfOWg88/s320/susumu12.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5229311714255974066" />
Tatame has all the details.

"It'll be a great fight, we'll see who is the best of the world there", said Belfort, that guarantees his style will be a problem for Lindland. "I saw his fight with Negao and he's a warrior... He comes be over you, but I don't think he has the strength to stay over me", analyzes Vitor, that wants another knockout on his career. "I'll go to knock him out... My punches are well-aimed and when it hits he won't stand", guarantees Belfort.

Classic example of wrestler versus striker, I guess we'll see how Lindland's chin holds up and Vitor's takedown defense. Very strong addition to Affliction 2 to go along with Fedor vs Arlovski.
Ultimate MMA News and Articles for your reading pleasure.

MMA Quote of the Day- Quinton Jackson Comments on Forrest Griffin's Punching Power

"I tore some ligaments in my hand (in the Henderson fight), I had three hard training camps in a row, plus the fight with Dan Henderson was really tough. I think my body needed that break and it showed in my training camp now. I came in feeling really good, and my body was well-rested -- I just wish I hadn't got so heavy. I don't think about ring-rust, but if there is such a thing, Forrest will be the best guy to come back against because he's got good skills, but he's not a guy that's gonna knock you out when you lag. I don't think Forrest could knock out anybody. The last time I had a long layoff, I came back against Matt Lindland and he's the worst guy to come back against after a nine month layoff and I did pretty well against him."

I think Quinton knows that Forrest knocking him out is the most highly unlikely outcome of this fight and I would have to agree.
Ultimate MMA News and Articles for your reading pleasure.
