Rogan's Comments, Bisping Performance Mar Average UFC 89; Fighter Payouts

I finally got to watch UFC 89 today as the Red Sox/Rays series took up most of my weekend. After unfortunately seeing the results via ESPN's scroller (at least they're running results now), I knew what to expect for results. However, I thought the card was good, but not as great as I heard some others make it out to be.

Thoughts on UFC 89: Leben vs. Bisping

For me, watching Marcus Davis take on Paul Kelly last night at UFC 89 in Birmingham, it was easy to see that he's really come full circle as a fighter. In the early stages of his career, Davis was most known for his powerful knockout punches. But these days, and especially after last night's second round submission of England's own Tellys, The Irish Hand Grenade is now garnering attention for his powerful ground game.

At the start of the first round, both fighters came out swinging, though neither was pushing particularly aggressively for a knockout. But at the start of the second, it was all about ground game. For a quick second, it looked like Kelly might have been able to submit Davis, but the Irishman was able to turn out of it, eventually sinking a choke on his opponent, holding on for the win. Even more impressive of the victory was the fact that Tellys had the definitive size advantage, as well as younger age on his side.

If last night's win was any indication, it should be clear to MMA fans that the evolution of The Irish Hand Grenade has just begun, and he's clearly got a lot more to show us before he's ready for retirement.

Also going toe-to-toe last night were Paul Taylor and Chris Lytle. I was definitely surprised that Lytle got the judges decision. Watching the fight, I for sure thought that Taylor was the more aggressive of the two, but I guess it just proves that you really can't leave it in the hands of the judges to decide, because more than half the time, you won't be happy with their choice. But even though the fight didn't end how I thought it would, it was definitely fight-of-the-night material, with these two warriors trading strikes all three rounds.

The final fight aired on Spike was the Chris Leben/Michael Bisping fight. While it was great to watch these two very talented fighters go up against each other, I was a little disappointed by the end. I was expecting a much more aggressive Leben to come out swinging. That being said, the changes that The Crippler has been making in his lifestyle seem to be working to his advantage in the Octagon, as he seemed to have his technique much tighter than it has been before. In the end, The Count ended up taking the judges decision, improving his win streak to three fights in a row.

Next up for Octagon action is UFC 90 on Saturday, October 25.

UFC 89 Review

As is usually the case with most UFC pay-per-views, the more I know going into a fight card, the less I really know after it's all done. I was an okay 3-2 on my predictions but was happy that several fighters I like won their fights.

Previewing UFC 89: Bisping vs. Leben

After a shocking result last month that saw UFC legend Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell get knocked out by Rashad Evans, the UFC returns tonight with an event from Birmingham, England. In all, 11 matches are scheduled, highlighted by England's own, Michael "The Count" Bisping facing his toughest competition since joining the middleweight division, Chris "The Crippler" Leben. I'll take a look at the five fights that are scheduled to air on Spike TV later tonight.

UFC 89 Predictions and Betting Odds

In just under a week we will be treated with a UFC event that will be aired on Spike TV. The card is headlined with Michael Bisping vs Chris Leben. UFC 89 is set to kick off on October 18th, just a week before UFC 90. So it just make sense that this card would be a free viewing.
The main card (what we'll be going over) includes. UFC 88 was the first prediction thread I made with the main card and we'll see if I can continue my 100% accuracy on picking winners:
Michael Bisping vs. Chris Leben
Keith Jardine vs. Brandon Vera
Luiz Cane vs. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou
Chris Lytle vs. Paul Taylor
Shane Carwin vs. Neil Wain
Marcus Davis vs. Paul Kelly

Viewing Guide : Big Fights of October 2008

Despite some promising events being cancelled for various reasons - uncontrollable and controllable - September had enough action to keep fight fans satisfied, including knockouts for the ages.

October is action-packed as well, with a big event every week, and I don't anticipate anything being cancelled this month.

Featuring Pavlik vs. Hopkins in boxing and Slice vs. Shamrock and Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote in MMA.
