The Anatomy of Patrick Cote's victory over Ricardo Almeida

Overview :

By beating Ricardo Almeida, Patrick Cote has gotten over the psychological hurdle of past failures against submission experts and decision losses to more experienced, superior fighters.

Although it is debatable whether Cote was a bona fide underdog against Almeida, Almeida's grappling advantage over Cote was greater than Cote's striking advantage over Almeida.

So how did Patrick Cote get the split decision win over Ricardo Almeida?

1. Patrick Cote took advantage of his superior size :

Patrick Cote is the taller, and naturally bigger, man than Ricardo Almeida. Cote got taken down by Almeida early, and got pounded, but once he survived that, it was his fight. Also, with longer legs, keeping a wide stance was really all that was necessary for Cote to stuff Almeida's takedowns.

After taking Round 1, Almeida tried way too hard to take Cote down; Cote, using his superior size advantage and wrestling remedial lessons, simply outstronged Almeida. Even when he was able to take Cote down, Almeida was just too sapped to do anything decisive against the bigger and stronger Cote.

2. Patrick Cote is the superior striker :

By negating Ricardo Almeida's size and strength advantage, Patrick Cote turned the tables on Almeida. On paper, Almeida's grappling advantage is bigger than Cote's striking advantage, but with Almeida's technique not working against Cote's strength and conditioning, Cote had his way standing up.

With one-punch knockout power in both hands, there was no way Cote was going to lose a standup battle against Almeida on Saturday night. Cote simply looked to land power shots with his hands, chopped Almeida's legs with low kicks, and kept Almeida on the run.

3. Patrick Cote brought the raw aggression :

Great strikers are by nature raw aggressors, but knowing that he survived Ricardo Almeida's best shots in the first round, Patrick Cote simply engaged in a free-for-all from Round 2 onwards. He chased Almeida around the Octagon, tried to find the range with his jab, and looked to land his heavy right hand.

Cote's right that knocked down Almeida at the end of Round 2 was a prime example of Cote's primal rage on display. Although it came too late to finish Almeida, Cote landed the shot at a running, guard-dropping Almeida. It it had come sooner, it may as well have led to a fight-ending ground-n-pound.

Summary :

By beating the more experienced Ricardo Almeida in UFC 86, Patrick Cote demonstrated that a powerful striker with the size and strength advantage can have his way with a superb grappler with a striking disadvantage. Cote wasn't afraid of Almeida's power, so he chased Almeida down, looking to take him out. In the event that Almeida tried to take him down, Cote knew he just had to apply his superior strength to some basic leverage to neutralize Almeida.

As a result, Patrick Cote was able to set the tone of the fight by being aggressive, and though he didn't land as many hard shots as he would have liked, he got the split decision win over a guy who was supposed to be the superior fighter, and now gets his middleweight title shot against Anderson Silva!

Patrick Cote vs. Ricardo Almeida (UFC 86) preview

From the Canadian Army to the UFC; from Canada to the United States; from harrowing decision losses to knockout wins. It's a feel good story, huh? Well, soak it up right now, because the feel good story is about to have a twist to the plot.

Patrick Cote is going find that Ricardo Almeida is not Kendall Grove. Cote is an exciting, heavy hitter with one-punch knockout power, but he does not have the wrestling or the ground game to counter Almeida. Cote has had trouble dealing with fighters with strong submission games, and he is going to find out how difficult it is going to be going up against Almeida.

Ricardo Almeida is a world class Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert, and he fights with discipline and excellent timing. He may not pack knockout power in his strikes, but he does have enough sting, and with patient counterstriking and evasion, he can set up his takedowns and submissions. As good as Patrick Cote is with his hands (he has a boxing background), he has not always been able to knock out world class fighters, and a savvy player standing up and a superman on the ground like Ricardo Almeida is going to send Cote's American Dream back to Canada for more beta testing.

UFC 86: Preview and Predictions

We here at the Muffin do previews better than anyone because we provide hard-hitting, in-your-face analysis and pure comedy. So without further adieu, here is a complete walk through of every fight on the UFC 86 card.

Corey Hill Vs. Justin Buchholz

Everyone remember Corey hill from TUF last season? He claimed to have fought in MMA prior to trying out for the show...a lie. Yet Dana kept him around and he showed a lot of promise on the show. I think this is primarily due to his build. At 6 foot 4 inches you are practically a Somalian on the commercials with Dikembe Mutombo......
