America's MMA Preview Should Have Been the WEC

What would everyone be saying today if the first ever nationally televised MMA event would have been the WEC? Would everyone be praising it as a huge success and a defining moment in the rise of MMA? Yea, I think so. Instead we got the EliteXC joke put on by CBS. Don't forget that CBS had final say in all aspect of the broadcast. That's one reason why you haven't seen the UFC or WEC on national TV. True MMA fans can watch the CBS debacle and know what is going down. What about the viewers that were tuning in to watch their first ever MMA event? I wonder what they're thinking today? WWE...WWE....WWE....WWE....WWE...WWE....that's what they're thinking. Why wouldn't they? Pyro entrances, dancing strippers, Phil Baroni making a fool of himself, bad officiating, fighters not making weight, Kimbo Slice.

One of the things I've always liked about MMA events is the constant fights. Within five minutes of the WEC broadcast there was a fight. It took 30 minutes for EliteCBS to show their first bout. I also love they way the fighters enter the cage through the crowd on WEC/UFC. I don't need the pyro and dancing strippers and Baroni getting his shirt torn off. That is stupid. MMA sells it's self and doesn't need the flash. What about the quality of fights? Not even close, WEC wins this one hands down. Miguel Torres Vs. Yoshiro Maeda was an instant classic and a better fight with a better ending than Robbie Lawler Vs. Scott Smith. The main event between Urijah Faber Vs. Jens Pulver was more than just a legit main event. It was a battle between one of the pound for pound top fighters in the world in Faber and the first ever lightweight UFC champion Pulver. I wish Pulver would have let his hands go a little bit more, but otherwise it was a very entertaining five round battle. It's to bad the nation didn't get to witness true MMA and not EliteCBS.

UFC Debate with InGameNow

In spirit of keeping the debate going.

The lion's share of talent at the weight classes you mentioned in your article are in the UFC.

I addressed Lawler already the people he have beaten are not even top 10...Scott Smith former UFC drop out, Frank Trigg who got destroyed by GSP, Matt Hughes and many others while in the UFC, Paulo Filho is already under the WEC Banner which is owned by ZUFFA who also owns the UFC and is currently in the process of getting over depression issues before his final title defense in the WEC. He will then be moved to the UFC. The rumor with him is he was formally on steroids in Japan and that would explain while his fights over here have been less than impressive.

You may have me on Lindland I for some reason just do not ever get impressed by him, even at the latest Affliction PPV. I thought he was dominant but not overly blown away. Then again assuming Fedor doesn't grab the ropes in their match last year then he may have actually beat him.

You saw what happened with Cro Cop, Rameau Sokoudjou and Shogun Rua when they were all offered big money by the UFC. They came over and got blasted. At least Sokoudjou was able to squeeze out a win, but overall their record in the UFC was 1 - 5 after going 44-11-2 previously. On paper a lot of these guys look like superstars and then they come over and get killed and the UFC is stuck with them and their huge contracts.

Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonner was a landmark fight and put MMA on the map, but their second match was far from as epic. As much as the American Public does not want to see a one sided war then why do millions of people buy Ricky Hatton versus Flloyd Mayweather to watch one guy get completely trounced. I think in Boxing and MMA most of the time the title fights are usually one sided because there is always a favorite who is just plain better.

"Finally the Cote issue. It will be a five minute fight, one sided, Silva wins" Do you care about Sean Sherk taking on Tyson Griffin on the undercard for possible #1 contender at 155? Or Diego Sanchez fighting Thiago Alves for #1 contender at 170? Cause all of those great fights are on the card in addition to the one round if Silva wins he ties the record for most UFC fights won in a row at 8. Isn't that what makes champions pure dominance?

Beatdowns! Anatomy : Robbie Lawler's brutalizing of Scott Smith along the fences

Another action-packed fight as expected, but this time there was a thrilling finish, as "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler finished Scott "Hands of Steel" Smith with knee strikes at 2:35 of Round 2.

So how did Lawler get the decisive victory? It came to three major factors :

1. "Ruthless" pressure

2. Using the fences

3. Winning the clinch battle

To get the specifics, go to the original article.
