Big Addition to Strikeforce: Destruction Card.

While all eyes were on the Lesnar-Couture bout over the weekend, one MMA news story seemed to squeak by rather quietly. That was the announcement of the new main event on the Strikeforce: Destruction card. Ex-Gang Banger Terry Martin and Ex-Elite XC fighter Scott Smith have been added as the new co-Main Event for the Strikeforce: Destruction event, which is on Friday Nov. 21st and airs on HDnet. Both of these BAMF's are coming off pretty big losses, Martin to Vitor Belfort at the Affliction event in July and Smith to Robbie Lawler at the EliteXC event also in July, so both fighters will be looking to make a big statement in this bout which will make this fight even sicker.

America's MMA Preview Should Have Been the WEC

What would everyone be saying today if the first ever nationally televised MMA event would have been the WEC? Would everyone be praising it as a huge success and a defining moment in the rise of MMA? Yea, I think so. Instead we got the EliteXC joke put on by CBS. Don't forget that CBS had final say in all aspect of the broadcast. That's one reason why you haven't seen the UFC or WEC on national TV. True MMA fans can watch the CBS debacle and know what is going down. What about the viewers that were tuning in to watch their first ever MMA event? I wonder what they're thinking today? WWE...WWE....WWE....WWE....WWE...WWE....that's what they're thinking. Why wouldn't they? Pyro entrances, dancing strippers, Phil Baroni making a fool of himself, bad officiating, fighters not making weight, Kimbo Slice.

One of the things I've always liked about MMA events is the constant fights. Within five minutes of the WEC broadcast there was a fight. It took 30 minutes for EliteCBS to show their first bout. I also love they way the fighters enter the cage through the crowd on WEC/UFC. I don't need the pyro and dancing strippers and Baroni getting his shirt torn off. That is stupid. MMA sells it's self and doesn't need the flash. What about the quality of fights? Not even close, WEC wins this one hands down. Miguel Torres Vs. Yoshiro Maeda was an instant classic and a better fight with a better ending than Robbie Lawler Vs. Scott Smith. The main event between Urijah Faber Vs. Jens Pulver was more than just a legit main event. It was a battle between one of the pound for pound top fighters in the world in Faber and the first ever lightweight UFC champion Pulver. I wish Pulver would have let his hands go a little bit more, but otherwise it was a very entertaining five round battle. It's to bad the nation didn't get to witness true MMA and not EliteCBS.

Beatdowns! Anatomy : Robbie Lawler's brutalizing of Scott Smith along the fences

Another action-packed fight as expected, but this time there was a thrilling finish, as "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler finished Scott "Hands of Steel" Smith with knee strikes at 2:35 of Round 2.

So how did Lawler get the decisive victory? It came to three major factors :

1. "Ruthless" pressure

2. Using the fences

3. Winning the clinch battle

To get the specifics, go to the original article.

Robbie Lawler downs Scott Smith in rematch to headline CBS/Elite XC results

It's CBS's second go-round with Elite XC and it's headlined by a match that wasn't completed on the first airing. Without the lack of Kimbo/Carano star power, this is an important night for the promotion to see if this will work long-term. Let's get to it, running thoughts-style!

>Open

-There is a ton of blood on the mat as we take our first live shot at the cage, exactly what CBS probably was hoping for.

-Mauro Ronallo's dominating voice gets me every time. What's it like to talk to him when he's not on air?

-Does Frank Shamrock have braces on?

>Shayna Baszler vs. Cristiane Cyborg

-There's actually a fighter with the last name Cyborg? Awesome!

-Baszler sounds like she's fun to hang around with.

-That is a massive tattoo on Cyborg's back. Those look like pink panties under her ring attire.

-One of the most bizarre things I've ever seen in a fight as Cyborg knocks Baszler down in the second round, assumes the ref calls it off, jumps up on the cage to celebrate and has no idea that the fight is still going. I'm sure Baszler wished it was as Cyborg finally came back to her sense and just pummeled the hell out of her to get the TKO win.

-The focus seems to be more on Gina Carano at ringside than Cyborg's dominant win. Apparently these are going to hook it up, possibly on October 4th when EliteXC returns to CBS. That'll be a great indication of where Carano's skills rank as Cyborg is a bad ass.

>Jake Shields vs. Nick Thompson for new Welterweight Championship

-Nice neck beard, Nick Thompson.

-This one didn't last long as Shields got Thompson down, eventually catching him in a guillotine choke to get the tap to become the first-ever EliteXC Welterweight champ. Final time was 1:03 of the first round.

-I love live interviews. Shields says that he'd love to fight the winner of Georges St. Pierre vs. Jon Fitch to unify the belts. I'm sure EliteXC loves mentioning the competition.

>Nick Diaz vs. Thomas Denny

-Denny is a great heel type for this fight in Diaz' backyard. He is going to get booed mercilessly.

-Diaz is only 24 years old? There needs to be some sort of fighter years translation like there are in dog years. He must be closer to 40 in fighter years.

-Diaz picked a great entrance song: Root by Deftones. I would expect a win here in about 30 seconds.

-INTENSE staredown between Diaz and Denny. I am getting the feeling that Denny is a lot more relaxed than Diaz right now.

-Renallo is starting to wear on me with ahis random analogies (Brett Favre, Crash Davis, etc.) . They sound so scripted that it's annoying.

-Has the tattoo industry exploded in parallel with the MMA industry? It's almost impossibly to find a fighters that doesn't have some ink, man or woman. Even the refs are inked up!

-Great end to the first round as Diaz and Denny are trading punches. The announce team seems hell-bent on creating moments of everything (Gus Johnson is screaming "This is MMA!). Sometimes, you just have to let them happen.

-Diaz finishes up where round 1 left off and knocks out Denny 30 seconds into the 2nd round. The hometown fans love it and Diaz is now back on track...and still manages to make things awkward with his post-fight interview which was all shoutouts and plugs for sponsors and schools.

-So far this has been a really quick broadcast. We're 75 minutes in and there's only one fight left.

>Middleweight Champion Robbie Lawler vs. Scott Smith

-If the first fight had gone to a finish, would this still be main-eventing the second CBS show?

-Ronallo is hard-selling how Lawler and Smith will be tied together in history for their previous fight. That's a bit much for me to swallow as it didn't end in a decision. Now if this fight turns out great and they do it a third time, perhaps. But for the first one to end the way it did hurts its position in history as one of the greats.

-Interesting ringside cameo of Anderson Silva.

-As we close out the first round, some of the strong back-and-forth from the first fight comes through. I love Lawler's in-cage theatrics.

-Lawler starts bleeding from the top of the head, which causes Ronallo to quote Yogi Berra ("It's deja vu all over again!") while calling Berra the Yankee Quipper. Good lord...make it stop.

-Lawler gets into a clinch with Smith and unloads some knees which dropped Smith. Smith turtled and Herb Dean called for the fight for Lawler at 2:35 in the second round. Not exactly a classic, but still an entertaining fight.

>Closing Thoughts

Overall, this was decent but I think the lack of star power definitely hurt. I realize that not every card can feature Kimbo Slice or Gina Carano, but Elite would have been wise to try to go get guys like Tito Ortiz, Fedor or Tim Sylvia to help carry some of these other events. I'll be interested to see what the ratings are and how the national media reacts to those numbers.

Slice and Carano return for the next CBS card in October.
