WEC 44: Main Card Predictions

Danny Castillo v. Shane Roller
Castillo is a member of Urijah Faber’s Team Alpha Male which means that I’m sure big brother pushed for a job for him in the WEC. He’s 3-1 in the WEC, and hasn’t lost since losing to Donald Cerrone at WEC 34. He’s an excellent wrestler with a balanced all around game. He’s got some pretty decent wins, including his most recent over previously undefeated Ricardo Lamas.
Roller is also 3-1, and his only loss is to current WEC lightweight champ Benson Henderson. He’s also a strong wrestler, which means that I don’t that think that either of them will be scoring a bunch of takedowns. Roller has three submission victories, all of them coming by way of guillotine choke, a favorite of amateur wrestlers.
This should be a pretty interesting (or sloppy) striking match because you have two wrestlers who are standing up. Expect one powerful hook to end this one.
Prediction: Castillo via TKO
Rob McCullough v. Karen Darabedyan
Remember when “Razor Rob” was the king of the WEC lightweights? Seems like it was so long ago. He’s 4-2 in the WEC, but has lost two of his last four. He’s a muay thai specialist who loves to stand and bang, as two of his three submission victories have come from strikes, a cut, and dislocating Kit Cope’s ribs. No tapouts here, folks.
Darabedyan is Armenian, and a training parter of Karo Parisyan and Manny Gamburyan. That means that he comes from the same judo background. The difference that he was an excellent boxer before ever getting involved in MMA. With the good ground game, he has a huge advantage over McCullough. If you add that to his ground game, this almost sounds like Razor Rob is being served up as a sacrifice to a debuting fighter.
Prediction: Darabedyan via submission

MMA Rankings: Featherweight (145 lbs.)

I’ve seen a lot of MMA World Rankings lately and We haven’t found one I 100% agree with. Therefore I’m launching the first ever 3rd String Safety Official MMA World Rankings. Please, hold your applause. These rankings will be fluid and updated after every major MMA card.
Featherweights – 145 lbs.
Updated: 11/15/2009

1. Mike Thomas Brown (22-4)
Is there a more debated 22-4 fighter in the world than Mike Thomas Brown? He’s the WEC champion, which like the UFC, has the best fighters in the weight class. He’s defended the title twice, both times against fighters on this list. So, whats the problem?
The problem is the way that he has defeated Urijah Faber. In the first fight, Faber threw a stupid looking back elbow that got his ass knocked out. Brown took advantadge, and there is nothing wrong with that. However, everyone in the world was waiting for Faber to get his title back. Then, in the second fight, Faber broke one hand and injured tendons in another after winning the first round. Brown cautiously took over the next few rounds, but was almost choked out by Faber sans hands in the last round.
Can you be the best fighter in your weight class almost get choked without hands? Looks like we’ll have to wait for Faber-Brown III to find out.
Up Next: Jose Aldo, WEC 44 on November 18th
2. Urijah Faber (22-3)
Faber is probably the most well known featherweight in the world. He held the WEC title five times before losing it to Brown. He has victories over Jens Pulver, Jeff Curran, Dominick Cruz, and Cole Escovedo. He’s got great hair.
The only weakness in his game is that he is own worst enemy. He tends to take some crazy chances that other fighters can take advantadge of. Back in the Continue reading MMA Rankings: Featherweight (145 lbs.)

Urijah Faber next fight possible against Raphael Assuncao at WEC 46 on Jan. 10

Former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber’s (22-3) will likely return to action against one-loss submission expert, Raphael Assuncao, at WEC 46 from the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif., on Jan. 10, 2010, according to MMAWeekly.com.

Urijah Faber Back In The Cage At WEC 46…

YES! The best looking man in MMA, Urijah Faber, is finally back from his two broken hands and will be fighting Raphael Assuncao at WEC 46 in January. Some people were suggesting that he wouldn’t be back in the cage until March, but never count out “The California Kid.” MMA Weekly broke the news.
The long-awaited return of World Extreme Cagefighting fan favorite Urijah Faber is now set.
MMAWeekly.com sources on Thursday confirmed that Faber would return at WEC 46 on Jan. 10 to face fellow featherweight contender Raphael Assuncao. They have verbally agreed to fight when the promotion returns to Faber’s backyard of Sacramento, Calif., at the ARCO Arena.
Faber (22-3) last fought in a loss to current 145-pound champion Mike Brown at WEC 41 in June, also in Sacramento. He fractured his right hand in the bout and has spent the past few months healing.
“That would be perfect timing for me,” Faber told MMAWeekly.com earlier this month when asked about a January return.
Faber is stuck in one of the weirdest situations in MMA. He lost his first fight with Mike Brown because he was being stupid and threw a spinning back elbow against a damn good fighter. Then, after beating Jens Pulver before getting a rematch, he broke one hand and seriously hurt his other during the fight. Even with that, he was to land some funky elbows, and held Mike Thomas to a somewhat unimpressive victory.

Now, people are still calling Faber one of the best featherweight fighters in the world, which is not something that you would normally say about a guy who has lost two out of his last three fights. I think that he needs two fights before getting back to Brown, and he’ll get his first win against Continue reading Urijah Faber Back In The Cage At WEC 46…

Urijah Faber Now Expected to Return in January, Rafael Assuncao Possible Opponent

Former WEC featherweight champ Urijah Faber, out of action since suffering a broken hand in a June loss to Mike Brown, is now expected to return in January, the fighter announced during Saturday's WEC 43 broadcast. Though Faber failed to mention an opponent for the bout, it appears WEC 43 winner Rafael Assuncao is the leading candidate

Urijah Faber Has “No Idea” When He’ll Return; Likely Won’t Fight Until 2010

Former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber, who injured both his hands in July in an unsuccessful bid to reclaim the title against Mike Brown, has told MMA Fanhouse that he has "no idea" when he'll return to the cage, with "The California Kid" unlikely to fight again until next year.

"Hopefully it's sooner than later, but I'll still be a happy dude," said Faber. "I'll be happy no matter what. I'm good no matter what happens."

( This scouting report makes references to the Obama Mixtape, which can be viewed on our original website )

What can we say? Barack Obama's got game and cardio. He's like the Urijah Faber of presidential candidates - cool, athletic and fit. The man is in his late 40's but he can move and run like a guy 15-years younger. He's seems to have the Kenyan physique, so he's not really powerful, but his stamina is grand.

Manny Pacquiao is the Urijah Faber of Boxing

And the new emperor of the sport. I can only marvel at how much Manny Pacquiao's boxing technique has gotten. Just two fights ago, against Marco Antonio Barrera, Pacquiao was still a brawler, with great physical tools and power, but rudimentary (for a guy of his stature) boxing skills. Pacquiao beat Barrera via unanimous decision, but you had to wonder how much longer Pacquiao could last with that style, especially after he hits 30.

However, in his rematch against Juan Manuel Marquez, ...
