Joe Saunders won his ninth straight decision at Safeco Field and Kendrys Morales hit a three-run homer, leading the Seattle Mariners over the Oakland Athletics 6-1 Sunday.

Saunders (3-4) allowed one run and five hits in 6 1-3 innings with six strikeouts and three walks. He is 3-0 with a 0.94 ERA in four home starts this year, improving to 9-0 with a 1.72 ERA in 13 career appearances at Safeco. He is 0-4 with a 12.54 ERA on the road this season.

Jason Bay also homered for Seattle, which has won three of its last four games and six of nine.

Tommy Milone (3-5) lost for the fifth straight start, giving up five runs, six hits and three walks in five innings. This was the first time during the skid he failed to pitch into the seventh inning, and he has a 3.62 ERA over that span.

Defending AL West champion Oakland (18-19) has lost six of seven and on Friday dropped below .500 for the first time since the opening week of the season. The A's start a series Monday at division-leading Texas.

Andy Pettitte Getting Weird in Old Age

Andy Pettitte had two odd moments on the mound over the last couple of weeks. These senior lapses have resulted in crucial runs allowed.
Let’s begin with last Sunday’s start against the A’s ….
Pettitte was facing Luke Montz leading off the 4th inning. The score was 1-1. From the windup, Pettitte pitched himself into a full count. Montz then fouled off a couple of pitches, which led to the 8th pitch of the at-bat….
That is when Pettitte decided he would throw from the stretch. Andy delivered a belt-high, 88 mph fastball down the center of the plate and Montz cracked it into the leftfield seats, giving Oakland the lead. The Yankees would come back and tie the game, but eventually lose on an 8th inning homer by Josh Donaldson.
Why throw that single pitch from the stretch, with no runners on base? I’m not sure the question was asked and I’m not sure anyone even noticed.
3-2 count, nobody on, nobody out, pitching from stretch for the first time in the at-bat

Indians' McAllister and 2 relievers blank A's 1-0

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Zach McAllister and two relievers combined on a shutout and the Cleveland Indians scored an unearned run in the fifth inning for their eighth win in nine games, 1-0 over the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night.
McAllister, Rich Hill and Chris Perez limited the highest-scoring offense in the majors to six hits and did not allow a runner to reach second base.
McAllister (3-3) struck out four and walked one in 7 2-3 innings. The right-hander was pulled after John Jaso's two-out single in the eighth. Hill then retired pinch-hitter Luke Montz to end the inning and Perez pitched the ninth for his fourth save.
Tommy Milone (3-4) lost a career-worst fourth straight start. The Indians managed only five hits, but two errors on the same play in the fifth led to the only run, which scored on Yan Gomes' sacrifice fly.

Athletics 5, Yankees 4

Josh Donaldson hit Oakland's third home run of the game, a tiebreaking drive off Boone Logan in the eighth inning that lifted the Athletics over the New York Yankees 5-4 Sunday.

Luke Montz and Yoenis Cespedes homered as Oakland took a 4-1 lead against Andy Pettitte, who struggled for the second straight start, but the Yankees rallied in the sixth against reliever Jerry Blevins.

Preston Claiborne, a 25-year-old right-hander, followed Pettitte and retired six straight batters in his major league debut. But Donaldson homered into the left-field second deck with one out in the eighth against Logan (2-2).

Sean Doolittle (2-0) pitched a perfect seventh, and Ryan Cook got out of a two-on, one-out jam in the eighth by striking out Jayson Nix and retiring Lyle Overbay on a flyout to deep center.

Oakland Athletics Purchase Contract of Luke Montz, Other Notes

The Oakland Athletics have purchased the contract of utility infielder Luke Montz from the Triple-A Sacramento squad. He takes the place on the active roster of veteran outfielder Coco Crisp. He is up to help provide bench help.
Joining him will be right handed pitcher Dan Straily who is back up after spending one day in the minors as a spot on the active roster opened up with the A’s having to place Brett Anderson on the disabled list.
Crisp is dealing with a left hamstring strain and his return is not known, although the organization is aiming for a mid-to-late May return. Anderson, who’s transaction is retroactive to April 30th should be out for about two weeks with a sprained right ankle.

A’s Comeback Attempt Falls Just Short in Loss to Angels

The opportunities were there, but the A’s could not come up with the big hit Wednesday afternoon, stranding 13 base runners in their first loss of the season to the Angels.
Oakland came up just short of their fourth consecutive come from behind victory, leaving the tying and winning runs on base in the bottom of the ninth of a 5-4 loss to Anaheim.
“They were grinding pretty good. When you put a lot of guys on base sometimes you’ll leave some on,” said Bob Melvin. “At the end of the day, we had an opportunity to win, so they battled as hard as they do every day.”
Tommy Milone pitched strong into the eighth inning, with three solo home runs disrupting his otherwise dominant outing. The crafty southpaw matched his career high with 10 strikeouts on the day and walked zero.
“I felt good throughout the whole game, just a few bad pitches.” said Milone.
“Both of them were supposed to be in, and I left them out over the plate,” Milone added about the pitches resulting in Mike Trout and Mark ...

Coco Crisp and Brett Anderson Land on DL, Dan Straily and Luke Montz Called Up

The Oakland A’s made a pair of roster moves Wednesday prior to their 12:35pm start at the Oakland Coliseum, sending starting pitcher Brett Anderson and center fielder Coco Crisp to the disabled list and recalling pitcher Dan Straily and catcher Luke Montz from the Sacramento River Cats.
Crisp, batting .283 with five homers and eight stolen bases, injured his left hamstring in the 14th inning of Monday night’s 19-inning marathon win against the Los Angeles Angels.
Anderson, 1-4 with a 6.21 ERA, originally injured his ankle against the Boston Red Sox. He made his next scheduled start against the Tampa Bay Rays, but was scratched from his most recent start Monday against the Los Angeles Angels. He was called upon to pitch in the 13th inning Monday night despite having been scratched earlier from the start and lasted 5 1/3 innings in relief.
He re-twisted the ankle though and now finds himself shelved for the next two weeks.

Angels 13, Athletics 13

Josh Reddick hit a three-run homer off Jered Weaver in the first inning, Luke Montz and Yoenis Cespedes each had two-run drives in the second off the Angels' ace and an Oakland Athletics split squad blew a big lead before rallying for a 13-13 tie with Los Angeles on Saturday.

Weaver gave up eight runs and six hits, walked two and did not strike out a batter in two innings.

Left-hander Travis Blackley started for the A's and gave up three runs in the first on three hits, then settled down to give up just two hits in his two remaining innings.

The A's and Angels combined for 33 hits and used 14 pitchers.

Zephyrs' Montz Drills Wells Deep

There was a big, bad moon rising tonight over Principal Park about the time New Orleans' Luke Montz boomed a Randy Wells s(t)inker through the teeth of the brisk zephyr blowing in off the Des Moines River to break a 1-1 tie and launch the visitors to a 7-3 series-evening win.

He did score a run after drawing a walk himself before Anthony RBIzo doubled him home to put the I-Cubs in front in the bottom of the third.
Rizzo had fanned on three straight breaking balls in the first. The first pitch to him in the third was another one which he pulled sharply foul. On the fifth straight one he saw he stayed back and lined it just fair inside the line at third.
Brett Jackson was back in the lineup tonight and led off in the bottom of the ...
