What About Depth?

Sorry for the absence of updates the past few days; it can be hard to post when there isn't much news coming out.
Anyway, there was some interesting discussion of the BA top prospects here, and the basic take-away criticism (particularly from Mike Emeigh, a smart long-time Pirates fan and critic) is that the Pirates' farm system still isn't that strong yet. If you look only at the ten-player list BA published, I think that's true, but I don't think a list of ten ...

Show Something Soon, Ian

Ian Snell takes the hill for the M’s tonight. He needs to pitch well pretty soon, or the M’s are going to have to seriously re-evaluate whether they can go into the off-season planning on him taking one of the spots in their rotation next year. To be frank, Snell has been terrible [...]--

(Or, Why Ian Snell is Insane and You Should Love Him For It)
Ian Snell is listed at 5′11″, but in actuality he barely scrapes 5′8″. He freqently changes his name, once struck out 17 batters in a game, and conducts anti-blogging tirades at team press conferences. Needless to say. he’s an interesting character.
Unfortunately, Snell fell [...]

What Went Wrong for Ian Snell Tonight?

To put it simply, he couldn’t throw strikes. Yes, he did get squeezed a little bit, but that doesn’t change the fact that he had no command whatsoever. In his 1 1/3 innings of work, he threw 60 pitches – 27 of them for strikes. Of those 60 pitches, 47 of them were fastballs. 78% [...]

New Seattle Mariners hurler Ian Snell made his much anticipated debut tonight against the Texas Rangers, working six innings of two run ball. It looks like the other “major” announcement of the deadline is that RHP Ian Snell is due up in the rotation after Felix, which would put him on pace to start for the USSM/LL gathering at Safeco on August 8th.
Ian Snell Rumors Resurface

Again, we're hearing rumors that Ian Snell could be headed to the Yankees. The latest is that the Yanks have scouts watching him pitch for the Pirates AAA team today.Snell isn't going to be the Yankees savior but he's shut down AAA hitters, has experience in the bullpen and rotation, and has a fairly dramatic ERA/FIP split. Sort of a meh move if it does happen. I hope they can get something better than Snell beforethe deadline.

Playing For Pittsburgh Makes Ian Snell Depressed

The image associated with this post is best viewed using a browser.Add Ian Snell to the list of baseball players struggling with mental issues this season. The good news is that he seems to found a causal link between his crippling depression and playing baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Snell, who had been struggling all season in the majors, actually requested to be sent down to AAA Indianapolis last month and responded by striking 17 batters in 7 innings in his first game down. He's...

I know most of us, if not all of us, spent some time criticizing Ian Snell this season (and last), but true depression is something that should be taken very seriously.
Perhaps going back to a "familiar place," - Indianapolis - will be therapeutic for him. I hope to see him turn it around.

Colorado A Possible Destination For Snell

John Perrotto reports "indications" that the Pirates are willing to trade Ian Snell and says the Rockies are becoming their most likely trade parter. Multiple people in the team clubhouse appeared convinced that Snell was about to be traded yesterday.Snell publicly questioned manager John Russell's strategy this weekend. Colorado manager Jim Tracy gave Snell his first major league rotation spot, back in 2006. Tracy's Rockies are now just 2.5 games out of the Wild Card race ...
