Texas Shuts Down California in Holiday Bowl

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - David Ash passed for a touchdown and caught another, as Texas played mistake-free football while forcing five turnovers to earn a 21-10 victory over California in the Holiday Bowl.

Ash completed 14-of-23 passes for 142 yards, 47 coming on a go-ahead touchdown pass to Marquise Goodwin in the third quarter.

The Longhorns (8-5), back in the postseason after last season's disappointing 5-7 campaign, held the Golden Bears (7-6) to a seven yards rushing in the defensive slugfest.

"This was a pivotal game for us in my estimation. [We] let the seniors show they have us headed back up the hill," Texas head coach Mack Brown said.

California's Zach Maynard tossed for 188 yards but threw an interception and lost a fumble to end his junior season on a sour note.

Maynard guided an 11-play, 69-yard drive to start the second half, and Isi Sofele's six-yard touchdown on a toss to the right gave the Bears a 10-7 lead.

But Goodwin scored sh...

Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl: Texas Defense Finishes Strong

After watching the afternoon appetizer that was the Military Bowl in DC where Toledo and Air Force went up and down the field to the tune of 83 points and 1,706 yards the Holiday Bowl had tough shoes to fill. While the game did not exactly live up to the point scoring, yard churning rapid pace that the nation got exposed to out of DC it did set the stage for some interesting debate.
The game itself was a 21-10 Texas win that saw both offenses struggle and ultimately Texas edge in talent beat out the California Golden Bears as the Longhorns made Cal revert to their early season, inconsistent ways. Cal quarterback Zach Maynard was 19 for 33 for 188 yards and one interception but the true story of Texas' defensive dominance was their holding of Jeff Tedford's squad to just seven rushing yards.
Cal comes up short in 31-28 loss at No. 8 Stanford

Zach Maynard took a small bit of satisfaction out of his first Big Game knowing he turned in one of his best performances of the season and considerably closed the gap in the long-running rivalry.

Andrew Luck and Stanford took everything else.

Maynard threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns before California's comeback bid came up just short, losing 31-28 to No. 8 Stanford on a rain-soaked Saturday night.

''We matched their game, we did a great job. I'm proud of my boys, I'm proud of my team,'' Maynard said. ''We fed off each other and we were locked in and focused. We were poised coming into the game. We knew we had to control the game and we came out guns blazing, we left it all on the field.''

The pelting rain did little to slow Stanford down once it started rolling.

Luck revived his Heisman Trophy campaign by tossing scores to Levine Toilolo and Ryan Hewitt, keeping the Cardinal's slim chances of a Pac-12 title and national championship alive. He overcam

No. 8 Stanford survives scare from Cal

Andrew Luck threw for 257 yards and two touchdowns, and No. 8 Stanford survived a shaky start to beat rival California 31-28 on Saturday night in a rain-soaked Big Game.

Luck revived his Heisman Trophy campaign by tossing scores to Levine Toilolo and Ryan Hewitt, keeping the Cardinal's slim chances of a Pac-12 title and national championship alive. He overcame an early interception and rallied Stanford (10-1, 8-1) from six points down to make sure The Axe stayed on The Farm for the second straight season.

Zach Maynard finished with 280 yards passing with two touchdowns for the Golden Bears (6-5, 3-5) in the 114th edition of the Bay Area rivalry. Cal's offense struggled in the second half before a late comeback came up short.

Stanford had its 17-game winning streak snapped the previous Saturday in a 53-30 loss to Oregon that seemed to dash its national championship dreams. With No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Oregon, No. 5 Oklahoma and No. 7 Clemson all falling this week, the Cardinal's chances migh

Luck, No. 8 Stanford survive to beat Cal 31-28

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) -- Andrew Luck slogged through a soggy field, all smiles, hands raised, taking a little extra time watching his Stanford teammates sprint to lift The Axe in triumph.

One last Big Game moment to savor.

Luck threw for 257 yards and two touchdowns and No. 8 Stanford survived a shaky start to beat rival California 31-28 on Saturday night in rain-soaked Big Game with a rare late start under the lights.

"It means a lot," said Luck, who has insisted this year will be his last in a Cardinal uniform. "It will mean more once the season is over, I'm sure, you get to reminisce. I feel very grateful and blessed winning two games in a row against them and retaining The Axe another year."

The pelting rain did little to slow Luck down.

Cal commits 5 turnovers in 31-14 loss to UCLA

California's Zach Maynard kept throwing the ball to Tevin McDonald. Trouble is, McDonald plays for UCLA.

McDonald, a freshman safety, made the first three interceptions of his college career, Derrick Coleman scored three touchdowns, and the Bruins bounced back from one of their most embarrassing losses in years to beat the Golden Bears 31-14 on Saturday.

''We know we can't win games by turning the ball over,'' Cal coach Jeff Tedford said. ''(Maynard) missed on a couple overthrows, and that cost us at crucial times. You have to be accurate.''

Maynard completed 14 of 30 passes for 199 yards, but was intercepted four times - three by McDonald and once by Aaron Hester. The Golden Bears added a fifth turnover on a lost fumble.

The Bruins scored 24 of their 31 points after turnovers in handing Cal (4-4, 1-4 Pac-12) its fourth loss in five games.

Coleman scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter and runs of 20 and 24 yards in the final period. He finished with 80 yards

Can Cal’s defense play well on the road against UCLA?

CAN CAL’S DEFENSE PLAY WELL ON THE ROAD AT UCLA? –
Cal successfully completed Step 1 of its four-game road to a bowl game by beating Utah on Oct. 22, but Step 2 may be more important, because the Oct. 29 game against UCLA is on the road.
The Golden Bears (4-3) appear to be better than UCLA, and based on Cal’s impressive 34-10 victory over Utah, the logical conclusion is that Cal will roll against a UCLA team that is reeling.
Not only did UCLA (3-4, 2-2) get hammered by a mediocre Arizona team 48-12 in its most recent game, Oct. 20, but it will have six players suspended for the Cal game for their part in a fight during that game. Two starters – receiver Shaq Evans and defensive tackle Cassius Marsh – are among the players suspended. Three other receivers who get playing time are also suspended, so the Bruins’ passing game, already weak, will be further hamstrung.
But there is one key factor: The game is on the road, and Cal’s defense, as good as it’s been at home (inclu...
