Dodgers up, facing Timmy!Two pitches and two hits. It may be time to yank 'im. Bullpen only just wakes up after three more pitches. That change up hadn't been touched all game. He was fooling Furcal with it too until that last one. The bat broke into 4 different pieces but the ball fell soflty inside of the left field line for a double as it spun into the giants bullpen area. One run scores. Manny faces off against Tim. The majors' best hitter and pitcher. Runners on second and third with no out. Walks him.Lincecum still gets to walk off to a standing ovation. Let's hope he doesn't end up with 4 runs on his record for this game. He deserves better.Jeremy Affeldt steps in and immediately induces a 5-3 double play. Giants Sign Howry

The Giants have agreed to a one year deal worth 2.75 million dollars with relief pitcher Bob Howry. Howry, who went 7-5 with a 5.35 ERA in 72 appearances for the Cubs, will likely be the Giants' setup man. The Giants are doing what they can to improve their bullpen, mostly because they gave up the third most homeruns in the league in the least amount of innings pitched. They already signed Jeremy Affeldt, and bringing in Howry gives them a lot more options in the later innings. Howry is one of the top late inning relievers in the game, who in eleven major league seasons has a 3.68 ERA. Howry struggled in 2008, but compiled a 2.92 ERA from 2004-2007 in 278 appearances.A
It will be interesting to see if the Giants pursue any more bullpen help.A

Affeldt to Giants

I'm going to try to throw up a short post for each notable free agent signing signing this winter. And yes, most of them will probably be just as timely as this one.

Giants sign Jeremy Affeldt for two years, $8MM.
Analysis: Szymborski, Law, Me.

The consensus on this one is that it's a nice move for San Francisco, which is strange, since that's not really their style. They're starting to put together a pretty nice pitching staff; now if they could just get one position player over that 110 OPS+ barrier they'd be set.

When I first saw that it was two years, I figured between $10MM and $12MM; seems like Affeldt gave the Giants a nice discount here at $4MM/year, especially considering the length. I read somewhere (can't remember where) that Affeldt felt like he overplayed his hand before signing with the Reds last January; maybe that experience played into him making such a quick decision this time.

Giants Scoop Up Affeldt

In an effort to beef up their bullpen, the San Francisco Giants signed Jeremy Affeldt to a 2-year, $8 million deal. When asked about the deal Affeldt said, "[The Giants] came in with an offer, and it was really close to what we were looking for. The negotiation was pretty quick. They were definitely on an A-list for me. They were really wanting to get me and bring me in to help out." A former Cincinnati Red, Affeldt went 1-1 with a 3.33 ERA in 74 appearances. He struck out 80 and walked 25 batters in 78 1/3 innings. In his final 34 games of the 2008 season, Affeldt recorded a 2.23 ERA. "It's a very good place to play and I know that division is up for grabs," Affeldt said. "I look forward to helping this team fight for a playoff spot." This is good news for the Giants' organization, seeing as their relievers had a combined 4.45 ERA and tied for 14th place in the MLB last season. They gave up the third-most home runs at 62. Affeldt will get a $1 million signing bonus with $3 million next season and $4 million in 2010.

Reliever Jeremy Affeldt became the first of 171 free agents to agree to a contract, striking a two-year deal Monday with the San Francisco Giants. The 29-year-old Affeldt pitched for the Cincinnati Reds last season, going 1-1 with a 3.33 ERA in a team-leading 74 appearances. He struck out 80 and walked 25 in 78 1-3 innings. The 6-foot-4 Affeldt, originally drafted by Kansas City in the third round in 1997, recorded a 2.23 ERA in his final 34 outings of 2008.

I was hoping he would be back, but for 4 million a year I think we could find a decent replacement

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Giants have signed lefty reliever Jeremy Affeldt to a two year deal worth 8 million dollars. Affeldt was 1-1 last season with a 3.33 ERA, a year after going 4-3 with a 3.51 ERA for the Rockies. The Giants hope Affeldt will "bridge the gap" between their starting pitchers and their closer, a spot in the bullpen that really hurt the Giants last season.
The Cardinals were reportedly pursuing Affeldt, as well as the Tigers and Mets. We can now expect Will Ohman to receive the exact same deal as Affeldt, or better, considering Ohman was much more dominant versus lefties.
