Duke needs to make plays that win games

If Duke’s recent rash of close losses has one thing in common, it’s that Duke was agonizingly close in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t seem to finish off a game-winning drive.
Maybe it was a false start or a holding call on offense. Sometimes, it was a missed tackle or a defensive penalty that prolonged an opponent’s clock-killing drive. And perhaps most agonizingly, Will Snyderwine – who entered 2011 as a Groza Award candidate, and has since graduated – missed even chip shot field goals. But that was often only after Duke’s red-zone offense (10th in the ACC) had stalled.
Six of Duke’s 12 games in 2011 were decided by single digits, and Duke was 2-4 in those games. In the last two seasons combined, Duke had a 6-18 record overall (3-9 each year) and was 4-10 in games decided by ten points or less. Senior wide receiver Conner Vernon said that despite the disappointing losses, the team’s experience in those games, win or lose, will help.
“It’s so hard to really work on it because you canâ€

Will's Duke Football Preview

It was like a broken record for Duke football last season. It was like a broken record for Duke football last season. It was like a broken record for Duke football last season. It was a second consecutive 3-9 season, followed by questions as to when or if Duke football will be relevant again. The Blue Devils have won 25 games this century, and 15 of those have come since David Cutcliffe took over the program four years ago. As much as the program has progressed, the question is if Cutcliffe can get the Blue Devils to a bowl game for the first time since 1994.

Offense
While a bit mistake prone, Sean Renfree is a very capable quarterback. Renfree completed 65% of his passes last year, and is for his career, has completed 63% of his passes. He was able to cut down on his interceptions last year to 11 from 17 the year before, while equaling his touchdown passes from the year before at 14. Renfree's passing yards were down last year from the year before, but he also did throw fewer passes last year. Duke&#

Duke Football: High Hopes, More Questions Await at ACC Kickoff

Duke is certainly not going to be center stage at the ACC Football Kickoff that starts Sunday in Greensboro, but for Blue Devils fans there is a lot of anticipation. This has been, right or wrong, marked as the year where Duke Football would emerge from the basement of the ACC and become one of the not so few and not really all that proud, bowl eligible teams.
Don't get me wrong, a bowl would be a glorious accomplishment for the Duke Football team, but a .500 record isn't exactly Earth shattering, but that is a story for another day. The Blue Devils have been bad or just plain awful in football for the better part of a half century, so a .500 record would be a positive step.

The expectations for this to be a special season are there and while I admire the optimism there are far too many questions that still need answers. In this preview I will attempt to look at some of the questions and concerns that will face Duke from almost the start of camp next month.

Questions:

Can Sean Renfree become an e

Duke Blue Devils: 2011 Exit Survey

In David Cutcliffe's fourth year at Duke I think fans were expecting a little more of a break-through than the 3-9 (1-7 in conference) that they got. When we talked to Patrick from Blue Devil Nation before the season he thought they would win five games and come just short of bowl eligibility. The big question for Duke is how far off are they from being a bowl eligible team? Two of their wins could have gone either way but so could three of their losses. Duke will bring back some key players next year in QB Sean Renfree and WR Conner Vernon and it will be interesting to see if Cutcliffe can finally get them over the hump. We caught up with Patrick once again to get his thoughts on the season and take a quick peak into 2012.

CFBZ: Duke started out 3-2 before losing its last seven games to finish 3-9 and 1-7 in the ACC. What kept this team from getting over the hump this season?

Patrick: I was definitely a broken record this season, but I was simply echoing much of what t...

6 questions about Duke

Greetings-
The weekly Q&A with a beat writer who covers Georgia Tech’s opponent. This week, Steve Wiseman of the Durham Herald-Sun was gracious enough to answer some questions about the Blue Devils. Steve has been covering Duke for the Herald-Sun since Aug. 2010. He’s previously worked at the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, the Biloxi Sun-Herald and the State in Columbia, covering the Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints and South Carolina, respectively. You can follow him on Twitter here and read his stuff here.
1. To what degree have Duke’s injuries cost the Blue Devils? Could their record be a win or two better if they’d been healthy?
Injuries have really cost Duke this year. It started early when Will Snyderwine, the preseason all-ACC kicker, suffered a foot injury in preseason camp. He missed two chip-shot field goals in a 23-21 loss to Richmond and has never been the same. He also had a big miss in the 24-23 loss to Wake Forest. So that’s two wins right there.
Blue Devil's Comedy of Errors Continue vs Virginia

How do you explain what Duke Football is anymore than a comedy of errors? If it weren't for bad luck they'd have no luck at all. That was no more evident than their latest loss, a 31-21 defeat at the hands of Virginia.
The Blue Devils came into the game in a must win to try to salvage a chance at a bowl game but the loss assures Duke (3-7 1-5 ACC) will not play in the post season for the 17th straight season.

And speaking of streaks the Blue Devils extend their losing streak to five and end their winning streak against the Cavaliers, who win for the first time in three seasons.

In what was an extremely physical and at times chippy game, Virginia got the best of Duke despite the Blue Devils playing 100 percent better than they had in the previous week against Miami. Still they were unable to avoid many of the same mistakes that have cost them all season.

Duke also was unable to avoid the injury bug as Kyle Hill and Jordan Dewalt-Ondijo were lost for the season with injuries. The Blue Devils also

Duke Squanders Redzone Chances, Loses to Hokies

Let me start off by saying and crediting the Duke Football team whom I didn't give any real chance of beating Virginia Tech. I figured after a loss last week in a game Duke should have won that they'd fold up. But they didn't do any of that and played an excellent game for the most part though they came up short again.
Once again it was the Blue Devils failure to execute what seemed to be basic plays that cost them in this game losing 14-10 and dropping them to 3-5 (1-3 ACC).

Kicker Will Snyderwine missed four field goals. Though one was from 59 yards at the end of the first half, three of them were well within his range and one just clanked off the post and fell to the ground symbolizing the kind of day it was for Snyderwine.

But while many will point the finger at him, David Cutcliffe said it best when he said in his post game press conference that the Blue Devils should have converted those redzone opportunities into touchdowns and won the game by three scores.

The main reason Duke was e

Duke keeps it close in 14-10 loss to No. 15 Hokies

Duke came closer than it has in a long time to upsetting a nationally ranked opponent. Close isn't good enough anymore for the Blue Devils.

Duke shut out No. 15 Virginia Tech in the second half but couldn't come up with enough plays down the stretch in a 14-10 loss to the Hokies on Saturday.

''We know how good we are. Not many people may see it, but we know how good this team is, and we know that we can hang with anybody in this league,'' Duke receiver Conner Vernon said. ''We proved it out there today. ... It's tough. Losses like these aren't easy to get over.''

Sean Renfree was 17 of 35 for 204 yards, but was intercepted three times for the Blue Devils (3-5, 1-3). They couldn't overcome four turnovers and lost their third straight overall and 44th in a row against nationally ranked teams. Duke hasn't beaten a Top 25 team since 1994.

Unlike so many of the losses during that streak, this one was competitive throughout. Duke had a golden opportunity t

Anthony Boone assisted Renfree inside the 20. Boone punched the ball in twice for Duke in the second half. With less then 8 minuets remiaining Will Snyderwine nails a 19 yard field goal to give Duke a 6 point lead. Only to be followed by Wake's response, a 66 yard reception from Price to Chris Givens to tie the game. Jimmy Newman added the extra point for the lead and game winning score. A bitter defeat for Duke as they played a solid second half, and let the victory slip out of their grasps.
Tanner Price's 64-yard touchdown pass to Chris Givens with 6:52 left lifted Wake Forest to its 12th straight victory over Duke, 24-23 on Saturday.

Price finished 15 of 25 for 215 yards with two scoring passes to Givens for the Demon Deacons (5-2, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). They let an early 17-0 lead vanish and allowed Duke to score on five consecutive drives before quickly retaking the lead.

Backup quarterback and short-yardage specialist Anthony Boone had two short touchdown runs for the Blue Devils (3-4, 1-2). They went up 23-17 on Will Snyderwine's third field goal of the day with 7:14 remaining.

Wake Forest struck back on its next play. Price fired a quick pass to Givens, who made a nifty move to get by slipping defender Zach Greene before dashing down the left sideline for the go-ahead score.

Duke crossed midfield only once after that, moving to the Wake Forest 40 before Sean Renfree's fourth-down pass for Donovan Varner sailed high with 1:20 left. Duke forced a three-and-out and go
