GameDay Niners News and Notes

Ernie Conwell thinks Vernon Davis is eventually going to bust out and have a monster game. With just five receptions for 87 yards after five games, it appears that Davis will be yet another under-utilized tight end in a Mike Martz-coordinated offense. There had been talk earlier in the year that Davis, despite his ability to run deep routes, would play more of a decoy role.
What's confounding is that quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan, as inexperienced as he was entering the season, hasn't relied on his tight end more. Tight ends are usually the security blankets for raw NFL quarterbacks. Perhaps Davis reaches his full value this weekend, but 49ers fans a?" and Davis' fantasy owners a?" are surely frustrated at his lack of production.
Within this piece, it's noted that Davis has taken on more pass-blocking duty than he expected.
Ann Killion writes that Mike Nolan's play calling might be too vanilla.
Kentwan Balmer is still learning about leverage.
The 49ers will have to focus their attention on Correll Buckhalter now that Brian Westbrook is out for tomorrow's matchup.

FROM THE DESK OF MIKE MARTZ...

by Andrew, The Grand National Championships

They will sing songs write books about this season. The magic that I am going to perpatrate upon these so-called suckas is going to be scary. Flat out and pure Hellraiser shit, am I right?

Right. Everybody's cracking wise upon the situation at quarterback. But you know what? I make the mediocre excellent. J.T. O'Sullivan will be my greatest victory ever. He has the physical gifts that Jon Kitna and Kurt Warner just don't have. And he's been learning at my feet for years. It doesn't matter that it's a rookie, the Reverend, and Bryant Johnson at wideout. He has Vernon Davis. They shall make each other superstars.

And did you know that the philistine before me didn't give Frank Gore twenty touches in a game but thrice? It's, as they say stupid, and when I say stupid, I do not mean stupid fresh...and they call me prickly and unlikeable!

I've had to deal with worse offensive lines, this is one that's passable. Jon Kitna prayed every day to get a line like this. It can make Frank Gore great and J.T. good. This is an offense that's gonna shock the world.

As defenses go? It doesn't matter. Kentwan Balmer, Jimmy Volmer, Arnoold Palmer, whoever can be their #1 pick. It does not matter. My offense can make them special too. Though Patrick Willis? He is the truth.

This offense can heal the tensions in South Ossetia, and this offense gives the 49ers the division. Bank on it.

Love,

Mike Martz

Get wireless AMBER Alerts on your phone.

NFC West Training Camp Updates

With the first weekend of NFL Training Camp complete, I'd like to provide a quick update from not only Cardinals Camp, however other NFC West Camps as well.
Arizona Cardinals - Receiver Anquan Boldin suffered a slight hamstring pull, as did Cornerback Marcus Brown. The Cardinals also got the chance to play indoors on the new turf inside Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, on Saturday, due to the threat of rain.
St. Louis Rams - Second-round draft pick Receiver Donnie Avery signed a contract and was expected to be in camp for practice this weekend.
San Francisco 49ers - First-round pick, Defensive Tackle Kentwan Balmer, signed a contract on Thursday. Training camp started yesterday July 26th.
Seattle Seahawks - First-round draft pick, Lawrence Jackson, signed his contract on Friday and became the first first-rounder to make into Seahawks camp on time since 2003.
Go Cards!

49′ers Sign First-Round Draft Pick

With the first day of training camp practices beginning today, the 49ers will have their top draft pick in uniform-- defensive lineman Kentwan Balmer. The "San Francisco Chronicle" reports both sides were able to reach an agreement on a contract late Wednesday night and Balmer flew from Los Angeles to the Bay Area in time for the opening of camp yesterday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The 6-foot-5, 315-pounder University of North Carolina product was the last of the team's six draft picks to sign a contract. He was taken 29th overall in the first round. "I'm glad it's over and I can just get to work playing football," Balmer said on the team's web-site. Balmer is expected to be used as a defensive end in the team's "3-4? alignment while also spending time at the tackle position.

Fourth-Round Pick OL Wallace Signs Deal

With the opening of training camp today, the 49ers signed another one of their recent draft picks -- offensive lineman Cody Wallace. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The 6-foot-4, 300-pound Wallace was taken in the fourth-round of last April's draft out of Texas A&M. According to the 49ers' web-site, Wallace served as the Aggies' team captain and started 13 games, earning All-Big 12 Conference honors.
His signing comes a day after the 49ers signed third-round draft pick -- cornerback Reggie Smith. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Smith was the 75th overall selection in April's draft out of the University of Oklahoma. He started 36 of the 39 games he played in, earning "first team" All-Big 12 Conference honors in his junior season. Only defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer, a first-round pick, remains unsigned.
