2013 NFL Season Standings: Mapping The NFC

Going in to this year’s draft I felt more excited than I had been in a long time. I think the main reason as that there were no clear-cut superstars on offense that would be picked early. We didn’t have Andrew Luck and RGIII coming off the board with the top two picks. There wasn’t a single running back even taken in the first round. It was going to be a draft full of diamonds in the rough. Now that we have made it to the end of all seven rounds, teams face either a clearer picture of what their 2013 season will look like or possibly they now have to question what talent to keep and who to cut.Either way, it gives us as fans a chance to look at some of the best acquisition and how they will effect each team. But I will leave the breakdown of the draft to some of my counterparts. What I want to do now is look ahead to the 2013 season and reflect on how this draft has helped paint the picture that will engage us all from September until February. This is part one of ranking the NFL teams,...

Freak Accident Ends Football Career For Stanford QB

Josh Nunes had a tough task ahead of him when he stepped in behind center for the Stanford Cardinal--that Andrew Luck guy left a pretty lasting impression. Little did he know that it would all come to an end for him not because he got laid out by a blitzing linebacker or pancaked by two defensive linemen.

He suffered a career ending injury just lifting weights.

Nunes was working out on bench press according to his Dad--a normal off-season workout--when the weight came crashing down on his chest causing a complete tear of his right chest muscle.

“The injury shouldn’t have happened and we’re not sure why it happened,” Tim Nunes (Josh's Dad) said. “It’s not something that could’ve been prevented. Doctors told us it’s rare for quarterbacks. Just a freak accident.”
The injury is one that he could come back from, but takes about 12 months after surgery to do so. Rather than risk further injury he has opted to retire from the game instead.

Cardinals Select Stanford RB Stefan Taylor (Rd.5, No.140)

With the 140th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Cardinals select Stanford RB Stefan Taylor. The Cardinal’s running back proved this season that he was capable of maintaining his level of play even without Andrew Luck at QB. While he isn't exceptional in any one facet of the game, he is technically sound, and well rounded. Taylor is possibly the safest back in this class due to his ability to not only pass protect, but to catch the football, which will make him invaluable on third downs.

Report: Luck's former OC could be joining him in Indy

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck could be reuinted with his former college offensive coordinator. ESPN.com reported Friday that Stanford's Pep Hamilton is a leading candidate to replace former Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians, who took the Arizona Cardinals' head-coaching job Thursday. Hamilton, the Cardinals' offensive coordinator during Luck's senior season, is one of a handful of candidates for Arians' job and could be interviewed Friday by the Colts according to ESPN.com. After one season as Stanford's wide receivers coach in 2010, Hamilton was elevated to offensive coordinator in 2011. The Cardinal averaged 43.2 points with Luck at quarterback in his final year and then rolled to a 12-2 season in 2012 that ended with a Rose Bowl victory. After the 2011 season, Luck was drafted No. 1 overall by the Colts. Hamilton also has interviewed with the New York Jets for their offensive coordinator job.
Balanced Stanford one win shy of Rose Bowl

PASADENA, Calif. Three months ago, the main question asked about Stanford Football was regarding a player who was no longer on the team's roster. At the Pac-12 Media Day, head coach David Shaw shifted the attention away from Andrew Luck, and onto the player who has now rushed for over 4,000 yards in his storied NCAA career.

"I think we've got the most underrated running back in the nation," Shaw said of Stepfon Taylor exactly four months prior to Stanford's 35-17 drubbing of UCLA (9-3, 6-3) at the Rose Bowl on Saturday evening that capped a Pac-12 North Division title and a rematch against the Bruins next Friday night at Stanford Stadium in the Pac 12 Championship.

The Cardinal (10-2, 8-1) relied on another outstanding performance by Taylor, who rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, setting a school record with his 21st career 100-yard game.

Though the three-year starter has amassed 4,132 career rushing yards while running for 38 touchdowns and has totaled a career

Huskies upset of No. 8 Stanford all on its defense

Justin Wilcox was plucked from Tennessee and brought to Washington to be the defensive coordinator charged with rebuilding a beleaguered Huskies defense that became a national punch line a season ago.

Just a few weeks back, it still looked like a major work in progress when LSU overran the Huskies in a 41-3 rout down on the Bayou.

But the amount of progress Wilcox was able to make between Sept. 8 and Thursday night was staggering as the Huskies shut down No. 8 Stanford in a 17-13 upset. Albeit with a different cast, the Cardinal steamrolled Washington (3-1, 1-0 Pac-12) to the tune of 446 yards rushing and 65 points a year ago.

On Thursday, there was still a 65 in the Stanford stat column, but this time that was all the Huskies would allow on the ground. It was the fewest yards rushing produced by Stanford since the 2007 season - also the same year the Cardinal last went without an offensive touchdown.

Washington fans stormed out of the stands to celebrate the Huskies' first win over a Top 10 foe since

No more Luck: Huskies beat No. 8 Stanford 17-13

Since taking on the rebuilding of Washington's program, no loss seemed more disheartening to Steve Sarkisian than the beating provided by Stanford a year ago.

Sarkisian and his Huskies got their redemption Thursday night.

Kasen Williams took a quick screen pass from Keith Price, broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and raced 35 yards for the go-ahead score with 4:53 left, and Washington rallied from 10 points down to stun No. 8 Stanford 17-13.

''That's a win for our program,'' Sarkisian said. ''I thought all along that this was a unique group that we had; a resilient group, a very serious tough-minded group.''

Trailing 13-3 late in the third quarter, the Huskies (3-1, 1-0 Pac-12) got a 61-yard touchdown sprint from running back Bishop Sankey on fourth-and-1 for their first offensive touchdown against an FBS opponent since the first quarter of the opener against San Diego State.

Out of luck: No. 8 Stanford falls to Huskies 17-13

It took almost a month, but Stanford finally felt the sting of not having Andrew Luck roaming The Farm anymore.

No one expected Washington to provide the hurt.

Kasen Williams took a quick screen pass from Keith Price, broke a tackle and the line of scrimmage and raced 35 yards for the go-ahead score with 4:53 left, and Washington rallied from 10 points down to stun No. 8 Stanford 17-13 on Thursday night.

No. 8 Stanford 1st road test comes at Washington

Preparing to face Washington a season ago, Stanford thought they would need the arm of Andrew Luck to dispatch of the Huskies.

Then Stepfan Taylor and his teammates started running - and never were stopped.

The eighth-ranked Cardinal (3-0, 1-0 Pac-12) head out on the road for the first time in 2012 on Thursday night when they travel to Washington (2-1, 0-0) looking to keep on running over the Huskies the way they did a year ago when Stanford set a school record with 446 yards rushing in the 65-21 victory.

It's been a dramatic few weeks for Stanford, which has gone from being peppered with questions about how it would survive without Luck, to now cracking the AP top 10 following its 21-14 upset of USC less than two weeks ago. That escape from San Jose State's upset bid in a 20-17 win to open the season is now long in the memory banks.

Even without Luck, Stanford a Top-10 team again

David Shaw and his Stanford players spent the past nine months telling anybody who would listen that the program had enough talent and depth without Andrew Luck to be a national power for years to come.

Now they have everybody's attention.

While it's only the third game of the season, Stanford's 21-14 victory over Southern California on Saturday night showed life without Luck might not be so bad after all. The Cardinal (3-0, 1-0 Pac-12) jumped from No. 21 to ninth in The Associated Press college football poll Sunday, while the Trojans (2-1, 0-1) dropped from second to 13th.

The same formula that propelled Stanford to an improbable football power has stayed true: a powerful running game, run defense and timely plays from the tight ends.

Stanford wins first game without Luck

Jordan Williamson kicked a career-long 46-yard field goal and the go-ahead score from 20 yards, and No. 21 Stanford survived a 20-17 win over San Jose State on Friday night in its first game since Andrew Luck left.

Former backup Josh Nunes threw for 125 yards and a touchdown in his first start in place of Luck, the No. 1 overall draft pick. But the redshirt junior struggled to move the offense when it counted and it almost cost the Cardinal (1-0) dearly.

The David Fales-Blake Jurich quarterback combo gave Stanford fits until De'Leon Eskridge fumbled in Spartans (0-1) territory late in the third quarter. That set up Williamson's tiebreaking kick, giving the redshirt sophomore who missed three field goals in a 41-38 loss to Oklahoma State in the Fiesta Bowl a small stroke of redemption.
