NFL Draft 2013 sleeper watch

By Ron Clements.
QB Ryan Griffin Every NFL fan knows the top players in the NFL draft. After watching all-star games, bowl games, the NFL Combine, and every sports talking head show there is, those same fans also may know of players who boosted their draft stock from January through March.East Central Oklahoma defensive end Armonty Bryant is an example of a player who was unknown by many in early January, but then was unblockable at the Texas vs. Nation game. He followed that impressive outing with a solid effort at the Combine. Those performances got him on people’s radars, coaches and fans alike. But there are always those players who remain under the radar, even through the Combine and pro days. Certain scouts like to keep some of their favorite players off-the-radar while other teams play things so close to the vest that they won’t even nominate a player for an invite to the Combine, where his talents would be showcased for all 32 teams. Those pet projects can sometimes lead ...

2013 Prospectus: Tennessee Volunteers

Since 2008 the Vols have had four different head coaches. Former Cincinnati head coach Butch Jones is the latest that will try to right the ship in Knoxville. Jones took over for Brian Kelly at Cincinnati and went 4-8 in his first season before going 19-6 over the last two years. Jones brings Mike Bajakian and John Jancek with him from Cincy as his coordinators. This trio had a good run at Cincy sharing the Big East crown each of the last two years but you have to wonder how long it will take them to get acclimated to the weekly grind of SEC football.

It's interesting when you look at returning starters because Tennessee has the most starters returning in the SEC East. But when you dig a little bit deeper, the Vols are losing a ton of talent. On offense the Vols will lose QB Tyler Bray (3612 yards passing, 36 TD), WR Justin Hunter (73 rec, 9 TD), WR Cordarelle Patterson (46 rec, 5 TD), TE Mychael Rivera (36 rec, 5 TD) and WR Zach Rogers (32 rec, 7 TD). For those playing at...

Lattimore making right move to NFL

It might as well have been a horror flick, the kind of graphic torture porn that makes grown men recoil and avert their eyes.

No one who saw it will forget it: Marcus Lattimore on a routine run around the left end, South Carolinas right guard pulling to lead the way. Tennessee linebacker Herman Lathers wrapped him up and spun him to the ground, but something wasnt right. The lower half of Lattimores leg spun like a whirligig as if his knee were little more than a universal joint holding nothing in place.

Some people reportedly fainted when they saw it in slow motion. More than a few got nauseous.
Marcus Lattimore reportedly tore all knee ligaments, broke femur

South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore appeared to suffer one of the worst leg injuries we’ve ever seen, and early reports suggest the injury was every bit as bad as it looked.
Lattimore, a junior from Duncan, S.C., was injured on a second quarter carry against Tennessee on Saturday. He took a handoff out of the I-formation and gained a few yards before being wrapped by linebacker Herman Lathers. Junior defensive back Eric Gordon then dove at Lattimore’s lower half and his helmet appeared to go straight into Lattimore’s right leg (video here).
Lattimore was carted off the field and taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Bryan VanOchten shared the word circulating around the press box at the Alabama-Mississippi State game that Lattimore suffered a broken femur and tore all four of his knee ligaments — the PCL, LCL, MCL, and ACL. Payne Insider adds that he has a chipped knee cap.
The injury would have been awful for any player to suffer, but it was particularly devastating for L...

Vols' Lathers continuing to put pain behind him

The wait is almost over for Tennessee linebacker Herman Lathers.

After missing the entire 2011 season with a fractured left ankle, Lathers returns to action Friday when Tennessee faces North Carolina State at the Georgia Dome in the opener for both teams. A strained quadriceps muscle has limited Lathers for much of the preseason, but he doesn't expect the injury to keep him from playing against the Wolfpack.

This only represents the latest comeback for Lathers, who already has dealt with a lifetime's worth of adversity. He spent much of his adolescence battling bone cancer and believing he'd never get the chance to play sports. Now he teams up with sophomores A.J. Johnson and Curt Maggitt to lead a linebacker corps that should anchor Tennessee's defense.

Vols finally adjusting to new defensive scheme

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee linebacker Herman Lathers sees a bigger difference now in first-year defensive coordinator Sal Sunseri's 3-4 scheme than he did in the spring.

Lathers said that in the spring, players had trouble just lining up correctly, but a summer's worth of film study and visiting with position coaches has Sunseri pleased with the defense's progress.

"The start of the spring was rough, new coaches, new scheme," Lathers said. "A lot of guys didn't trust the stuff, but once spring got midway, a lot of guys seen the scheme works only if you follow the scheme and do what you're supposed to do.

"Playing in the defense is all about trust and being comfortable with who you're playing with. Trusting the guy next to you to do his job and make plays."

Sunseri still wants players developing toughness and working on fundamentals while adjusting to the new defense.

Vols finally adjusting to new 3-4 defensive scheme

Senior linebacker Herman Lathers sees a ''night and day'' difference in how the Volunteers are adjusting to the new 3-4 scheme installed by Tennessee first-year defensive coordinator Sal Sunseri.

Lathers said players had trouble in the spring just lining up correctly, but a summer's worth of film study and visiting with position coaches has Sunseri pleased with the defense's progress.

Sunseri still wants players developing toughness and working on fundamentals.

The Vols struggled to get pressure on opposing quarterbacks last season and Sunseri said the pass rush ''isn't where it needs to be'' but is improving.

Wednesday is Tennessee's first full two-a-day practices of fall camp. The Vols took to the field in the morning and will have another practice session in the evening.

Vols trying to bounce back from losing seasons

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Coming off consecutive losing seasons for the first time in more than 100 years, Tennessee has renewed confidence and optimism as players reported for fall camp Thursday.

Entering coach Derek Dooley's third year, the Volunteers have a potentially potent passing game and a veteran core of starters, but also have big questions about the lack of a running game in recent years and a new defensive system.

Sophomore left tackle Antonio Richardson said the Vols know how much talent they have and he believes the key for success will be their ability to bond as a team, which was emphasized during the offseason.

Dooley said it became apparent last year Tennessee didn't have good team chemistry and that's why it's been important for upperclassmen such as senior linebacker Herman Lathers to become vocal leaders this season.

"I never been around a good football team -- a championship team -- that didn't always say we just had great team chemistry, we had great leadersh

Dooley: Vols open spring with 'typical first day'

Tennessee's Derek Dooley said Monday's morning session of spring football practice was ''a typical first day.''

The Volunteers are looking forward to a fresh start after finishing 5-7 last year. The third-year Tennessee coach has seven new assistant coaches. They are working with several midyear enrollees and a number of players recovering from various injuries or learning a new position.

''The effort was really good. I expected it to be that way,'' Dooley said. ''We have, of course, a long way to go from a discipline standpoint knowing what to do, knowing how to do it, knowing why it's important to do it that way and going out there and doing it the right way. It was sloppy from that standpoint.

''The key, of course, is how we learn from it and we don't go out the next day and make the same mistakes.''

Despite not practicing in pads, Monday was a big step for players like linebacker Herman Lathers, who missed all of last season after
