What Happened to Ron Villone?

(by Anthony Wilson) On June 19, after an appearance in Nationals Park against the Blue Jays, Ron Villone was
cruising along as the Nationals best reliever. He worked 0.1 innings that day without giving up a run (though he did walk a guy and gave up a hit) and reduced his season ERA to 1.77. In a bullpen that can be best described as miserable -- more like moribund -- Villone was one of the few bright spots. So, what happened to Ron Villone?

(AP Photo. Manny Acta checks the Yankees-Mets score on the Jumbotron as he departs from the field after pulling Ron Villone from yesterday's game in Tampa. The good news for Manny Acta is that Jerry Manuel's Mets are laying down like dogs again, unlike his Nats. A few weeks ago, we thought he's lost his team - we were wrong.
No shortage of duct tape and bubblegum...

The endless tinkering and reshuffling of the abused and misused Nationals' bullpen continued earlier today, with the immortal Ron Villone serving as the latest piece of duct tape slapped on Jimbo's ill-conceived monstrosity. Oh, and Mike Hinckley, DFA, which really is a shame considering that he seemed to have finally figured it all out last September.
Villone is the guy in the picture above; not the one in the catcher's gear. Don't go getting yourself too...

Mets Cut Lefty Reliever Loose

Adam Rubin of the Daily News is reporting that the Mets have released lefthanded reliever Valerio de los Santos.
The veteran reliever, who was in major-league camp at the start of the spring, had drawn positive reviews, including for his willingness to help young players, but he got caught up in a numbers game.
This probably bodes well for Ron Villone more than anyone else. (He just got tagged for 4 runs as I write this.)
I have a strong feeling Bobby Parnell may be close to locking up a sp...

No real surprises here, but it does seem early to be sending this many players to the minor league side especially with the players in the WBC.The four who were sent down are Rob Mackowiak, Eddie Kunz, Valerio De Los Santos and Josh Thole. I said all along Rob Mackowiak would be in Buffalo hoping for a call-up. The guy is extremely versatile but other then a few years in Pittsburgh, hasn't shown he can hit regularily in the majors. This spring he hit .182 in 11 AB.
