Over the past two seasons, Beimel has given up just one homerun while playing for the Dodgers. Colorado may appeal to Beimel because he would be playing in the same division as he has for the past three seasons. Beimel has reportedly had discussions with the Tigers and Cardinals, but no contract offers have been exchanged.A

The Rockies are expected to pursue a late inning guy, and could also target Dan Wheeler, Ron Villone, or Trevor Miller. As for starters, they are expected to target Brad Penny, who has also had success in Colorado.A

This story was approved by MLB Rumors.

Looking Ahead at the 2009 Free Agent Market!

Now with some glaring holes going into next year. The Mets will have a new ballpark but they also will have to replace some parts.

Obviously the bullpen is a mess starting with Billy Wagner.

The second base position can be resolved with a veteran and that means that Castillo will be traded for a bag of balls.

The starting rotation is also very interesting thing to look at with Oliver Perez (who is only 27)who is going to be a free agent and has Scott Boris as a agent.

The Mets will have Pedro Martinez coming off the books. As well as Moises Alou, who has been a disappointment because he never plays.
Pineiro wins, finally

Matched up against the Phillies' Cole Hamels, it seemed Joel Pineiro would be searching for a way to end his pitching drought some other night, but with a little help from the Cards' leading home run hitter and an All-Star, he got just enough help. The bullpen was surprising as well. And the most amazing part: Hamels, with the exception of the two earned runs, probably pitched better than anyone else in the game, on either side.
My Team Can Beat Your Team

Spring training officially begins tomorrow, albeit only pitchers and catchers reporting. Even with teams gearing up for the regular season there are still plenty of options on the free agent market for teams looking to fill a void, create competition, or build depth. I decided to give some of these lonesome hobos a job and assemble my own ensemble. That's right, I'm starting an expansion franchise named the Salt Lake Serpents (ironic?). My infield is a bit weak, but my outfield has a good mix of speed and pop. In the rotation I've got some innings eaters, and in the bullpen I've got many has-beens. Some are old and brittle, many are long past primes, but they're just the type of crusty veterans I'm looking for...did I mention my payroll is only $35 million?

Salt Lake Serpents 25-man roster:
Starting Lineup:
RF- Kenny Lofton
LF- Shannon Stewart
1B- Shawn Green (also backup outfielder)
DH- Sammy Sosa (also backup outfielder)
C- Mike Piazza
CF- Corey Patterson
3B- Tony Graffinino
SS- Royce Clayton
2B- Jerry Hairston Jr.

Bench:
Greg Norton (corner infield and outfield), Neifi Perez (infield), Damian Miller (catcher), and Russel Branyan (corner outfield and infield)

Rotation:
Kyle Lohse, Josh Fogg, Jeff Weaver, Bartolo Colon, and Odalis Perez (lefty influence)

Bullpen:
Bob Wickman as closer, Armando Benitez, Shawn Chacon, Antonio Alfonseca, swingman Byung-Hyun Kim, and lefties Ron Villone and Mike Myers

Think I can challenge the Orioles or Pirates?

Memo To MLB Teams: Do Not Trade With Kevin Towers

We were looking at the N.L.'s leader board today and one category jumped out as us, San Diego Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez is leading the league in RBI with 26. Gonzalez set the franchise record with 25 for the month of April and at just 24-years-old looks to be a cornerstone of the franchise for years to come. That got us wondering: why on earth did the Rangers get rid of him?

To be fair, the Rangers have Mark Teixeira at first base, and he's a perennial All-Star, but still you figure they could have found a place for Gonzalez, a former No. 1 overall pick in the Draft. Instead they sent him to the Padres in one of the more lopsided deals in recent memory. And it was one of the many times Padres general manager Kevin Towers has absolutely raped another team ...

2007 Yankee Preview & Projections

A close look at the 2007 Yankees as they may take form following Spring training as well as some possibly moves made by the time we turn the calendar to July.

With some creative maneuvering, Cashman may reassemble one hell of an array of talent. Both starting pitching and bullpen depth could be extremely exciting if not dominant. This would back an already juggernaut of a lineup.

I Live For This

Joe Torre says he will manage beyond 2007, with or without the Yankees. He also hopes to have a long conversation with Bernie Williams.

Also, Cashman's first order of business will be a discussion with Mariano Rivera. Who has been rumored - by either morons or publicity-seeking columnists - to be on his way out of New York. Mariano spoke softly and not defensively, he will finish his career in pinstripes and it won't be at the end of this season.

Dammit Joe Torre, Bring back Mel Stottlemyre

I don't know if it's new pitching coach Ron Guidry or Joe Torre, but I cringe at times watching the Yankees abuse and mismanage their bullpen. Tonight against the Angels was just another example.

Some quick stats entering tonight's game. Scott Proctor leads the AL in appearances, 65 games. Kyle Farnsworth is second in the AL in appearances, 60 games. Tied for third in appearances with two others is Ron Villone, 59 games.

Jaret Wright started tonight's game and was pulled after 3 2/3 innings. Brian Cashman should probably be blamed as much as anyone for the Yankees not having a long reliever, but Joe Torre needs to take responsibility for the inevitable breakdown that decisions like tonight's will cause at some point. With well over half the game left to play and already losing by 3, Joe Torre turned to, you guessed it, Ron Villone, Scott Proctor and Kyle Farnsworth. Do the yankees have other RP's on the active roster?

The answer is yes and he's trying equally hard to ruin the pen's newest man, Octavio Dotel. The Yankees managed to tie the game 5-5. In the bottom of the 9th, Torre brought in lefty specialist Mike Myers to face Garrett Anderson who promptly doubled. With a man on second and no outs, Torre brought in Octavio Dotel.

Just to recap. Dotel made his first appearance on August 16th. He recorded a strike out, but gave up a walk and a hit in 1/3 an inning. Just like you do with every pitcher who returns from Tommy John, Joe Torre threw Octavio in the very next game the following day. Dotel responded by giving up 3 hits, 2 ER, in 2/3 of an inning. A few days later in his third appearance, he gave up one hit while throwing a third of an inning. In his fourth appearance, he threw an entire inning, the most since his return. He walked one, but did not give up a hit.

That brings us to tonight. Man on second and Dotel fresh off of a one inning performance that was so slightly better than average that he's already become Torre's 9th inning man. Aren't the Yankees paying Kyle Farnsworth $7 Million a year to setup Mariano and pitch in these situations? Why did Farnsworth pitch the 8th? Why was a man playing in his fifth game back pitching in the ninth with a man on in a tied game? Why didn't Dotel enter the game in the 5th, a lesser pressure situation where he could have started an inning? At this point in his comeback, Octavio Dotel should not be the relief pitcher coming into the game with runners on in the ninth.

Here's what happens next. Juan Rivera singles. Runners on 1st and 3rd. Torre opts to intentionally walk Howie Kendrick. Bases loaded. Adam Kennedy pops up. 1 out. Mike Napoli flies to left field and Reggie Willits, who had come in to pinch run for Garrett Anderson, tags and scores from third. Dotel fails to throw a complete inning for the fourth time in five appearances since returning from Tommy John.

The Yankees obviously don't have the bullpen depth to deal with short outings by their starters, but that pen is going to look a lot worse if misused. Villone's ERA in August is well over 5 and Dotel shouldn't be pitching in pressure situations yet. Farnsworth has an ERA of 3.93. If he's far and away the best option every time Torre needs a reliever than Cashman better be working the waiver wire. If the yankees make the playoffs, it's not a stretch to imagine their bullpen guys being completely burnt and hung with a bunch of losses.
