Oregon Basketball’s 2013 recruiting class…so far

High Flying Ducks
College basketball recruiting can be confusing. With signings occurring during two different periods (one before the season and one after), it can sometimes be hard to track what players have signed, what players have committed, and what players are still interested in your favorite collegiate program.
Luckily for us college sports fans, recruiting sites such as Scout, Rivals, and ESPN exist.
Dedicating plenty of time and effort to cultivate all the information that will be valuable in assessing where a program could be headed in the future, these sites make it easy for writers (like me!) to break down recruiting classes and take a peak at what lies ahead.
Taking a look at the Oregon Ducks‘ recruiting class, they have already signed seven players (if you include Tyree and Tyrell Robinson as basketball players as well as football players) and apparently still in the running for Anthony January, Jabari McGhee, and Brandon Rosser. Though they did miss out on five-star Aaron Gordon,

Tony Woods Says He Is Excited To Play Against Louisville

I’m sure most of you remember Tony Woods, the young man who almost became a Louisville Cardinal. It was just few years ago that Louisville fans thought they were getting a big time transfer in Tony Woods, a 6-foot-11 center. Woods announced that he would transfer from Wake Forest to join Rick Pitino’s Louisville program. At the time, this was a big deal, considering nobody predicted Gorgui Dieng’s impressive development.
Woods was booted from the Wake Forest program after an off the court incident. He had recently pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of assault on a female and received a suspended sentence of 60 days in jail, plus community service. Woods reportedly pushed the mother of his infant son, causing her to fracture her spine. Despite Woods’ blemished reputation, Pitino still decided to take a chance on him. Woods was expected to be eligible to join Louisville at the semester break of the 2011-12 season and complete that season, then have one full year to play in 2012-13....

Ducks end UCLA's 10-game win streak

Tony Woods scored 18 points and No. 21 Oregon pulled away over the final 6.5 minutes to beat No. 24 UCLA 76-67 on Saturday, improving the Ducks to 5-0 in Pac-12 play for the first time in 39 years.

Dominic Artis added 14 points, and Arsaian Kezemi had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Ducks (16-2, 5-0), who snapped the Bruins' 10-game winning streak, including eight straight victories at home.

UCLA (15-4, 5-1) led by three points at halftime after shooting 55 percent. They led by five early in the second half and tied the game at 52 before the Ducks' defense stepped up and sent the Bruins' shooting into a tailspin.

Travis Wear scored 17 points to lead the Bruins, whose winning streak equaled their longest since 2008-09. Norman Powell added 11 points starting in place of Shabazz Muhammad, who finished with 10 points, as did Kyle Anderson.

Tony Woods scored 14 points for Oregon, including the go-ahead dunk in the final minutes, as the Ducks held on to defeat Arizona State 68-65 on Sunday night.

Damyean Dotson and Carlos Emory scored 14 points apiece for Oregon (14-2, 3-0 Pac-12), and Dominic Artis added 10.

Jahii Carson scored 20 points, and Evan Gordon had 17 for the Sun Devils (14-3, 3-1).

Carson's potential game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer was wide.

A 3-pointer by Felix with 2:08 to play put Arizona State up 60-59, but Woods answered for the Ducks with a two-handed slam to give Oregon a 61-60 advantage with 1:44 remaining.

Oregon went 7 of 8 from the free-throw line in the final minute to seal the win.

The Ducks used a 7-2 run in the final 3 minutes of the first half to lead 32-28 at halftime.

Arsalan Kazemi had his best game of the season with 20 points and six rebounds to lead Oregon past UTSA 95-78 on Thursday night.

Dominic Artis scored 16 points and center Tony Woods, who didn't start for the first time this season, had 15 points off the bench for the Ducks (6-1), who shot 63 percent from the field.

Woods' replacement, Waverly Austin, had 10 points.

Edrico McGregor scored 19 to lead the Roadrunners (3-3), who also shot 56.6 percent from the field. Michael Hale III added 18 points and Kannon Burrage had 17.

Kazemi, a one-year senior transfer forward from Rice, made 8 of 9 from the field. He also had four assists.

His dunk with 16:23 to play started an 8-0 run for Oregon after UTSA had trimmed a 53-40 deficit to 60-55. The Roadrunners never got closer than 10 points after that.

Oregon 67, Jacksonville St. 45

Tony Woods scored a career-high 17 points as Oregon remained undefeated with a 67-45 victory over Jacksonville State on Monday night.

E.J. Singler added 11 points and Dominic Artis had 10 for the Ducks (4-0), who are off to their best start since also going 4-0 in 2007-08 - the last year they went to the NCAA tournament.

Woods was 8 for 12 from the field and also tied his career high with five blocks.

Chris Deanes had 10 points for the Gamecocks (3-2), who have dropped consecutive games after opening the season with three straight wins for their best start in 18 seasons. And much like their 77-58 loss to No. 18 UNLV last Saturday, this one wasn't close.

Oregon led 37-20 at halftime. Woods had 12 points and four blocks in the first half, and Singler had 11 points with three 3-pointers.

Return of the Tall Firs

The inaugural men's National Championship in 1939 was won by the Oregon Webfoots. They weren't the ducks yet, and no, the Webfoot name wasn't a reference to one. They were named after a group of fishermen from Massachusetts who had been heroes during the Revolutionary War, and then settled in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. But the basketball team wasn't always called the Webfoots anyway. They were nicknamed the Tall Firs because they had a 6-8 center and a remarkable five players taller than 6-2.

Now they're seeing a return of the Tall Firs, in size, if not in talent.

Last year they added 6-11 Tony Woods (via Wake Forest and JUCO) who established a new Oregon record for blocked shots. And now it appears that Eugene will be the destination for 6-11 JUCO center Waverly Austin. That is, if they can get him into school.

Austin was denied entry at South Florida due to some of his credits being unacceptable. He was also denied entry to USF out of high ...

New kids on the block: Profiling Oregon basketball’s newcomers

Advancing to a New Age
Coming off a very impressive season in the Pac 12 and NIT, the Oregon Ducks Basketball team is eagerly awaiting a 2012-2013 season that should see further improvement and a possible return to the hallowed grounds of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship.
Key to this hope that the 2012-2013 season will bring further success are returning starters such as C Tony Woods, F E.J. Singler, and F Carlos Emory.
While these players do give the Ducks a solid base (and there are surely other quality players on the roster — Jonathan Lloyd for one) for the future, the loss of Garrett Sim to the “real world” and young shooting guard Brett Kingma to a transfer has given the Ducks the need to reload their roster in order to ensure success in 2012-2013 and beyond.
E.J. Singler will be one of the main pieces for the Oregon Ducks in 2012-2013
In order to shore up insecurities in their transition between eras in Duck basketball, Dana Altman (head coach of the Ducks) has brought in new faces for th
