McDermott, Creighton eliminate Cincy

Doug McDermott had 27 points and 11 rebounds, and Gregory Echenique scored 13 points to help Creighton hold on to beat Cincinnati 67-63 on Friday in the second round of the Midwest Region.

Ethan Wragge added 12 for the Bluejays, who won their NCAA tournament opener for the second straight year.

McDermott, the two-time Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year and 2012 All-American, made all 11 free throws to help the seventh-seeded Bluejays (28-7) move on to play Duke on Sunday.

Sean Kilpatrick's driving layup after Cincinnati had the arrow on a jump ball cut it to 64-63 with 17 seconds left.

Austin Chatman sank two free throws for Creighton. Kilpatrick's attempt at a tying 3 rimmed out, and the Bearcats were whistled for traveling after grabbing the rebound.

Chatman then hit one of two from the line to clinch it.

No. 17 Creighton 81, S. Illinois 51

Doug McDermott had 21 points and 10 rebounds and No. 17 Creighton shot 63 percent, bouncing back from a pair of road losses with an easy 81-51 victory at struggling Southern Illinois on Sunday night.

Gregory Echenique added 12 points and 11 rebounds and the Bluejays (18-3, 7-2 MVC) were 12 for 20 from 3-point range with Ethan Wragge hitting his first four attempts and Jahenns Manigat going 4 for 4. Creighton also dominated on the boards with a 39-19 cushion and has won 10 straight in the series while shaking off setbacks at Wichita State and Drake.

Desmar Jackson scored Southern Illinois' first 10 points then later on went 21 minutes without scoring before finishing with 16 for the Salukis (8-12, 1-8). Southern Illinois has lost nine of 10.

McDermott was 9 for 13, Echenique was 5 for 6 and Grant Gibbs and Manigat were a combined 9 for 9 for the Bluejays.

Creighton shot 74 percent in the first half while taking an 18-point lead, reminiscent of last season's matchup at Southern Illinois in which the

Huskers fade in 2nd half in 64-42 loss to Bluejays

Nebraska coach Tim Miles' first exposure to the Cornhuskers' rivalry with Creighton was rough on the court and on the scoreboard.

Doug McDermott scored 27 points, Gregory Echenique had 12 points and 12 rebounds, and No. 16 Creighton pulled away in the second half for a 64-42 victory Thursday night in the annual meeting of the state's top two Division I programs.

Creighton (8-1) won in Lincoln for the first time since 2004.

''It's a disappointing loss for Husker fans,'' Miles said. ''We wanted to come out and compete and make it a game to the last possession. It's still a learning process. We're trying to build our program to where we're on the other end of this outcome.''

Dylan Talley scored 14 points and Brandon Ubel had eight points and 10 rebounds to lead the Cornhuskers (6-2) in an extremely physical game at the Devaney Center.

Creighton and Nebraska were meeting for the 46th time, and the home team had won the last seven games. The Huskers

Doug McDermott scored 27 points, Gregory Echenique had 12 points and 12 rebounds, and No. 16 Creighton pulled away in the second half for a 64-42 victory over Nebraska in the annual meeting of the state rivals Thursday night.

Creighton (8-1) won in Lincoln for the first time since 2004.

Dylan Talley scored 14 points and Brandon Ubel had eight points and 10 rebounds to lead the Cornhuskers (6-2).

Grant Gibbs had 10 assists for Creighton.

Creighton and Nebraska were meeting for the 46th time, and the home team had won the last seven games. The Huskers lead the series 25-21.

The crowd of 13,368 was the first sellout at the Devaney Center since the 2011 game against Kansas and first for a nonconference game since Creighton visited in 2006.

The Bluejays were without Josh Jones, their first man off the bench. Coach Greg McDermott was expected to address the reason for Jones' absence after the game. Jones averages 7.0 points and almost 20 minutes a game.

Saint Joseph's loses 80-51 to 11th-rated Creighton

Saint Joseph's second meeting with a Top 25 opponent didn't go nearly as well as the first.

Doug McDermott scored 18 of his 23 points in the first half, and No. 11 Creighton rode a fast start to an 80-51 victory over the Hawks on Saturday.

Gregory Echenique added 16 points and six rebounds for the Bluejays (7-1), who bounced back after being upset by Boise State on Wednesday.

Langston Galloway scored 10 points to lead the Hawks (4-2), who played their first true road game.

It also was their first ranked opponent since they beat then-No. 20 Notre Dame 79-70 in overtime on Nov. 16.

''Now we have some good food for thought,'' Martelli said. ''Was it the road? Was it the way we practiced? We have to look at everything there for improvement. We walk out with our head down over getting whipped, but we don't walk with our head down and say, `Woe is us, that's the end.' ''

Longwood loses on road 105-57 to No. 14 Creighton

Not that it would have changed the outcome, but Longwood's task against 14th-ranked Creighton became much tougher when their best player fouled out early in the second half.

Michael Kessens was on the bench for the last 18 minutes while the Bluejays finished a 105-57 victory over the road-weary Lancers.

Kessens was assigned to guard Creighton center Gregory Echenique. Both are 6 feet 9. The problem for Kessens, the freshman from Switzerland, was that the 260-pound Echenique outweighed him by 55 pounds.

The Bluejays exploited the matchup, feeding Echenique inside for easy baskets or trips to the free-throw line.

''Mike Kessens is an inexperienced college player, he's new to the country, he's new to the game. He's been off to a great start,'' Longwood coach Mike Gillian said. ''He played 14 minutes. He didn't even get to play in the game. I didn't take him out. I would have left him out there and let him go head-to-head against these guys.''

Houston Baptist loses 97-62 to No. 25 Creighton

It took Houston Baptist almost six minutes to score its first field goal against No. 25 Creighton and about just as long to score its second.

By then the Huskies were down by 20 points and on their way to a 97-62 loss on Saturday night.

Art Bernardi and reserve Anthony Hill each had 16 points to lead Houston Baptist, which was playing a ranked opponent for the first time since facing then-No. 15 Michigan in November 2009. Hill had 11 points in the first half.

''Those guys came prepared for us. They're just real strong,'' Huskies coach Ron Cottrell said. ''We had no matchups that went our way, and it snowballed as the night went on. If not for Anthony Hill in the first half, that game could have been real, real ugly.''

Doug McDermott scored 25 points and Gregory Echenique had 18 points and 14 rebounds to help the Bluejays of the Missouri Valley Conference overpower the Huskies (4-7).

No. 25 Creighton 97, Houston Baptist 62

Doug McDermott scored 25 points, and Gregory Echenique had 18 points and 14 rebounds to help No. 25 Creighton overpower Houston Baptist 97-62 on Saturday night.

McDermott, who came in as the nation's No. 2 scorer at 24 points a game, had his eighth straight 20-point game for the Bluejays (8-1).

The Huskies (4-7) had no answer for the 6-foot-9, 270-pound Echenique, who needed only 15 minutes to record his first double-double of the season. Echenique also blocked five shots and threw down several big dunks.

Art Bernardi and reserve Anthony Hill each had 16 points to lead Houston Baptist.

Creighton, playing for the first time since an 80-71 loss at St. Joseph's on Dec. 10, went on two 10-0 runs and led by as many as 29 points. The Bluejays took a 46-23 halftime lead and opened the second half on a 12-2 run. They led by 39 points with 10 minutes left.

The Bluejays clamped down defensively on the Huskies, who were scoring 77 points a game and had five players averaging in double figures.
