Terps lead 39-37 at half

Here's a halftime look at the first-round NCAA game in Spokane, Wash.

It took Houston on;y a few seconds to put up a 3 on its first possession – a miss.

The Cougars took an 18-13 lead behind nine early points by Aubrey Coleman, who accounted for 16 of Houston’s first 29 points.

But the Terps – exploiting Houston’s lack of inside presence – took a 37-29 lead late in the first half.

Maryland was led in the half by Jordan Williams, who has 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Here's the thing:- Maryland can score inside. Williams can post up and rebound. Sean Mosley and Landon Milbourne (10 points) can cause inside damage. Houston is not good in the paint.

Houston closed to within 39-37 on junior guard Adam Brown’s heave to beat the halftime buzzer Brown was between midcourt and the 3-point line when he let it fly.

Maryland looked like it was going to get the last shot of the first half, but Houston's Aubrey Coleman managed to throw an outlet pass to Adam Brown, who hit an awkward-looking heave from just inside the midcourt line at the buzzer to make it 39-37 Terps at the break.

Aubrey Coleman is known for more than just his hot shooting in Houston. He was the player who, last season, was called for charging in a game against Arizona. As he walked over the Wildcats' Chase Buddinger, he appeared to purposely stomp on Buddinger's head.

Houston is watching the upsets

The Houston Cougars, of course, enjoyed watching Thursday's upsets in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Since they are a No. 13 seed themselves, they noticed that No. 13 seed Murray State upset fourth seed Vanderbilt.

"I think that everybody is going for the underdog, and I think that [Friday] people are going to be behind us because we're going to do some big things," Houston guard Kelvin Lewis said.

Houston's Aubrey Coleman on Thursday referred to the Cougars being called "dead man walking" by coach Tom Penders during the Conference USA tournament. Penders had said that the Cougars had nothing to lose in the postseason and could relax because so little was expected of the team. The Cougars won the tournament.

"We're going to play loose and 'dead man walking' again," Coleman said.

Maryland, by the way, said it sold 450 of its allotted 550 tickets. No immediate word on how many Houston sold.

Penders says Vasquez is 'probably lottery pick'

Houston coach Tom Penders says Maryland senior guard Greivis Vasquez "is probably a [NBA] lottery pick," meaning he would be selected in the upper portion of the first round.

Penders was asked to compare Vasquez to Aubrey Coleman, the Houston guard.

"I don't see any comparison," Penders said. "Aubrey is just a basketball player learning how to play what Greivis already knows. And I'm not demeaning Aubrey."

Coleman began playing the game only a few years ago. Vasquez has played on the Venezuelan national team.

Penders said Vasquez "is a great point guard, probably a lottery pick."

Analyzing Maryland’s Sweet 16 Chances

Here a day late (we don’t pay well, or at all) with analysis of Maryland’s tournament draw is Mr. Irrelevant Maryland sports correspondent Andy Peden.
First Round — Houston
Houston finished the regular season at 15-15 and 7-9 in CUSA. CUSA has been dominated the past decade or so by some guy named Calipari that is now leading Kentucky to their soon to be vacated Final Four. CUSA has been a one-bid league for years mainly because Memphis hasn’t lost a conference game since they dropped “State” from their name. This year UTEP dominated (15-1) the league but wasn’t able to win the conference tournament. Enter Houston who won four games in four days.
They are coached by Tom Penders who most D.C.-area folks will remember from his days at GW. They run an up-tempo style of offense that is fairly efficient (ranked 40th by Kempom.com). They lead the nation in turnover margin at +12.6 and in steals 6.4 (both stats tempo adjusted). Their best player is Aubrey Coleman who leads the nation in scoring with 25.6 ppg. While he can fill it up, he’s not a particularly good shooter at 43.9% FG and 32.6% 3FG and he shots, A LOT. For those that think GV shots too much, this guy put up 200+ more shots that GV.
After that, there isn’t much there. They go with a 5′8″ PG, a 6′4″ SF and rotate a bunch of 6′6″ to 6′8″ post players. No one inside does a whole lot. For that reason and the fact that they are really a .500 team, this is a fairly good matchup for MD.
MD typically has trouble with teams that can put two big bodies on the floor and get a lot of offensive boards like GT, Wake and even Duke. That’s not Houston. They are actually one of the worst rebounding teams in the country. Normally, I would say that MD would outrun this team but this year I can see MD really working the flex in halfcourt sets, pounding it inside to Williams, Milbourne and Gregory. Kenpom.com said Maryland by 14, which sounds about right to me.
Second Round — Michigan State or New Mexico State
If MD takes care of Houston, they most likely play Michigan State. MSU didn’t finish the season well. They lost three in a row after Kalin Lucas was injured and while they won five of six to close the regular season, the only good team they beat in that stretch was Purdue. Then, surprisingly, they got beat by Minnesota in the quarters of the Big Ten tourney. I’m not going to predict an upset, but I think New Mexico State might give them trouble. We’ll go ahead and assume MSU advances, which means MD would face a typical Izzo team.
They are physical, play tough halfcourt defense, block shots and can rebound. They are not a huge team with Morgan, Green and Roe all in the 6′6″ to 6′8″ range but they do take up space. They don’t shoot particularly well (outside the top 200 in both 3FG% and FT%), but they move the ball and get good looks inside. This team is similar to MD with a HOF coach, experienced guards, great ball movement and tough defense. The difference between the two is MD is a better shooting team while MSU can rebound you to death.
If MD’s bigs can keep pace with MSU inside, MD should be able to win this game. If MD gives up a box score like they did to Derrick Favors or Brian Zoubek, then it’s over. Because no one on MSU is freakishly tall like Zoubek or freakishly athletic like Favors, I think Maryland holds its own inside and wins this one.
If MD can get to the Sweet 16, then we’ll break down their next opponent Monday. My bet is that team would be Kansas. (Ed. note: No ****!)

Arizona's Punctual Postseason Push?

Arizona's Punctual Postseason Push?

The Wildcats season started up and down and continued that way through the first half of conference play. A few big wins (Gonzaga, San Diego State, Kansas) but more tough losses and worse yet 0-fer on the road left Cat fans with a bad feeling in their gut. It got even worse after a disappointing last second loss to USC and losing a heart-breaker to Arizona State (Thanks to referee Dave Libbey), and it looked as if Arizona was going to have to choose between the NIT and the CBI Tournaments at the end of the year...if there was any interest. But it began to turn around and last week I went into a territory unfamiliar to Arizona fans of the last quarter century, debating what it would take out of the Cats to make it to March and play in the tourney. At the time the Cats were red hot. They were holding on to a 3 game win streak, starting with the Aubrey Coleman tap dance against Houston, which then rolled into a big win over Washington State, and an even bigger win over Washington to put the Cats at 14-8 (4-5) and showing signs of life heading into the back half of Pac-10 play. The first question at hand was whether or not the Cats could overcome their 0-6 road record on the Oregon Trail. If they couldn't the season was over. While watching the Oregon State game on Thursday I told my wife 2 things: that that game was the biggest game of the season for Arizona, and that if there were a drinking game to take a drink every time you heard "Michelle" "Barack" "Obama" "President" "White House" "Inauguration" or "in-law", making it to halftime would be nearly impossible. While those rules,...
