Owens to Mariners, Ward to White Sox

Just a couple minor moves involving Jerry Owens and Daryle Ward. The Mariners have signed outfielder Jerry Owens to a minor league deal while the White Sox have signed Ward to a minor league deal and assigned him to Triple-A Charlotte. Ward was hitting .222 with 2 RBI in eight games for the Newark Bears before the White Sox picked him up.

It is nice to see Ward land with a big league club. Ward struggled in 2008, but had a .327 batting average in 2007 with the Cubs, including 3 HR. I hope he does well for them.

Reds Sign Jones, Ward

The Cincinnati Reds have agreed to minor league deals with OF Jacque Jones and 1B/OF Daryle Ward. It just so happens that both are former Cubs; however, only Jones played under Reds manager Dusty Baker. Ward has a good chance to make the club as a pinch hitter, while Jones might need to prove himself in Triple-A before getting the call up.

In the third inning of last night's game, I heard something that I feel needs comment. The man leading off for the Cubs that inning was booed before he even approached the plate. At that moment, Fukudome was hadn't batted in game 2 and had recorded a putout in right field. True, he went 0 for 4 the night before, but outside of DeRo and The Riot, who exactly hit well in Game 1? So what, exactly, had Fukudome done to that point that deserved him being booed? Would The Mets Sign Pudge?

According to Mark Healy, the Mets would be smart to sign Ivan Rodriguez this offseason. Schneider hit .257 this season and did a pretty good job handling the staff. However, bringing in a veteran like Pudge would give the Mets a much needed leader, as well as someone who can handle the pitching staff. In a lineup like the Mets, you really don't need a catcher who is going to put up big numbers. If Pudge comes in and can handle the young pitchers and work closely with the veterans, the Mets should be able to get into the playoffs.A
Aside from Rodriguez, it is important that the Mets add bullpen depth as well as depth on the bench. Someone like Daryle Ward or Martin Prado would really help that club.A

No matter what kind of team Atlanta is fielding, going down there, and Florida as well, is never an easy trip. The Cubs have sucked ass in Florida for the last several years. In fact, they hadn't won in Miami since 2005. Coming of a 3-game sweep in Atlanta, the Cubs were riding an 8-game winning streak into Florida. The Phillies came into last night trailing by 1 game in the National League East. They Started the ageless one, Jamie Moyer against San Diego and Greg Maddux. This had to be one of the oldest pitching matchups in major League History. Each dueled to the 7th as Maddux caved in giving up a Homer to Pat "The Bat" Burrell. Phillies Won 1-0. Ward-o-saurus Walks the Earth Again

In one of those magic moments that seem to happen during every team's playoff run, Daryle Ward went from one of the Cubs 2008 goats to Northside hero. His three-run homer in the top of the ninth was good for a .647 WPA, which seems to be the biggest hit of the Cubs season.

Before that astonishing at-bat, Ward was 0 for his last 10, 4 for his last 29, and 4 for 40 as a pinch-hitter this season. Nothing like a big surprise in a big package.
