Here’s What Really Happened On That Colorado Buzzer Beater

College basketball fans (and fans of legitimate basketball shots, in general) did a collective “WTF???” on Thursday night after referees waived of Colorado Buffaloes guard Sabatino Chen’s three-point buzzer beater. Chen’s deep ball would have knocked off the previously undefeated Arizona Wildcats. Replay rules allow for referees to review all shots as time expires, and multiple camera angles seemed to indicate Chen got the ball off in time. However, there’s one camera angle ESPN didn’t show the audience. This explains everything.

Is Video Replay Destroying Sports?

Colorado basketball coach Tad Boyle wants to see an end to instant replay review. For years, fans have called for the integration of replay video to perfect the final outcomes of games. Has our obsession with perfection diluted the human element of sports? |
Tad Boyle's Colorado Buffaloes did everything they were supposed to do Thursday night in Tucson. Facing an undefeated, third-ranked Arizona Wildcats team on the road, the Buffaloes outplayed Arizona the majority of the game and seemingly held off a late comeback when Sabatino Chen banked a three-pointer at the buzzer that silenced the lively McKale center crowd with one bang. To the naked eye, the Buffs had just trampled over the hearts of Wildcats faithful with similar blunt brutality as they enforced just months ago in their upset over Arizona in the NCAA Tournament. History of the game will tell a different story. (AP Photo/John Miller) After countless looks at the instant replay of Chen's shot, and despite no clear view available to pr

Pac-12 confirms call in UA's win; Boyle critical

PHOENIX -- Arizona and Colorado have developed a nice little rivalry in two short seasons together in the Pac-12.

The Buffaloes knocked the Wildcats out of NCAA tournament contention with a 53-51 victory in the Pac-12 tournament championship game last season. And while that one went down to the end, it was nothing like the controversial finish to Arizona's victory Thursday, their first meeting since.

Guard Sabatino Chen banked in a 3-pointer from the top of the key on the final play of regulation to give Colorado an apparent 83-80 victory over the third-ranked Wildcats, and the Buffaloes celebrated on the McKale Center court in the aftermath.

TV replays seemed inconclusive as to whether the shot left Chen's hand in time, but after a lengthy on-court review using video monitors, the officials changed the call, waving off the basket. The ball must be completely out of a shooters hand before the light on the backboard illuminates.

Arizona, 13-0 and one of four undefeated teams in Division I, went on

Let's Face It: Colorado Got Screwed...

((HT: ESPNU/youtube))

Colorado's Sabatino Chen banked this shot in before everything went off at the McKale Center... but it didn't count...

The HQ has no idea why, other than blindness...

In overtime, everything returned to its normal state in Bear Down! country as the Wildcats won... something that will stay with the Buffs a for a while...

Colorado’s Sabatino Chen hits game winning shot against Arizona, only to have it called off

The Arizona Wildcats won a controversial game Thursday night against Colorado after the refs screwed over the Buffaloes in the final seconds of regulation.Colorado’s Sabatino Chen appeared to have hit the game winning 3-point shot with .1 seconds remaining. However, after the refs reviewed the shot, they determined that it didn’t count. Here’s the reason the banked game-winning shot never counted for Chen (look at the clock behind the basket). To review: Light, irrelevant. Fact that they called it good, irrelevant. Clock on TV screen, irrelevant.Clock over backboard: decisive.— Seth Davis (@SethDavisHoops) January 4, 2013Arizona won the game in overtime, 92-82. The potential meaning of this game when March roles around, Arizona as a No.1 seed and Colorado fighting for a spot in the tournament, is frightening. Hope the NCAA committee remembers this play when all is said and done.[Video via @RobDauster] [Photo via @CorkGaines]

Arizona pulls off stunning rally, stays perfect

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Kevin Parrom scored five of his 16 points in overtime after No. 3 Arizona staged an improbable late rally in regulation and the Wildcats escaped with a 92-83 victory over Colorado in their Pac-12 opener on Thursday night.

Colorado's Sabatino Chen banked in a 3-pointer at the end of regulation but officials waved it off after reviewing the video, saying the ball was on his fingertips as the backboard lights went on to show time had expired.

Arizona (13-0, 1-0) outscored the Buffaloes 10-2 over the final 1:35 of regulation to force the overtime. The Wildcats were down by 17 points in the first half and 16 with 12:40 to go in regulation.

It was the third close win for the Wildcats, who beat Florida 65-64 and San Diego State 68-67.

Askia Booker led Colorado (10-3, 0-1) with 18 points.

Refs blow call in Colorado-Arizona game

In a very entertaining game, the Colorado Buffaloes went to Arizona and beat what was a previously undefeated team. Sabatino Chen completed an unreal career night with a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Unfortunately, the refs (and this wasn't their first mistake of the night favoring Arizona) defied all logic by looking at the film and deciding that the shot wasn't good. Here's the film: And here's the still photo: Arizona went on to 'win' in overtime, keeping their perfect record.
