Renaldo Woolridge to play hoops at USC

Renaldo Woolridge, a son of former NBA player Orlando Woolridge, will play for Southern California next season.

The forward is set to graduate from Tennessee this summer with a degree in sociology, but was granted one more season of eligibility after being limited to eight games because of an ankle injury during his junior year.

Woolridge averaged 4.3 points and 3.3 rebounds playing in 25 games last season for the Volunteers. In three years at Tennessee, he started 20 of 93 games. The 6-foot-9, 215-pounder is from Sherman Oaks, Calif. His father played 13 years in the NBA, including with the Los Angeles Lakers.

USC coach Kevin O'Neill says Woolridge can play multiple positions and will make an impact in the one year that he's eligible.

The Trojans recently signed guard Brendyn Taylor from Los Angeles to a national letter of intent, joining earlier signees guard J.T. Terrell and Strahinja Gavrilovic of Serbia.

Renaldo Woolridge transferring from Tennessee to USC

Renaldo Woolridge, a 6-foot-9 forward who played at Tennessee, said he was transferring to USC and is looking forward to playing in the 2012-13 season with the Trojans.

Woolridge, the son of former NBA player Orlando Woolridge, will "walk" as a Tennessee graduate this spring and then complete a few hours of coursework during a mini-term that will enable him to play for the Trojans without having to sit out a season.

Woolridge, who played at Studio City Harvard-Westlake High, averaged 4.3 points and 3.3 rebounds last season. He joins a USC team that was decimated by injuries and finished 6-26.

"A lot of times, it takes a fall for a team to be able to rise," Woolridge said. "They had a lot of guys hurt and they have a lot of young guys coming back. I can't wait to contribute."

Woolridge said he chose USC as his transfer destination because of his relationship with the coaching staff. Assistant Bob Cantu recruited Woolridge when he was in high school. Woolridge said it wa

Vols Insider: Bubble burst but NIT isn't so bad

Tennessee's bubble had probably burst long before Saturday's loss at Alabama.

The Volunteers' poor performance, which has been all too familiar during road games this season, all but solidified that they'll be playing for the NIT from here on out.

That hasn't changed Tennessee's mentality heading into a week of winnable games against Ole Miss and at South Carolina.

"It's definitely a must-win game for us," junior forward Jeronne Maymon said. "We have to get back in the gym, get refocused and come ready for Ole Miss."

The focus hasn't been hard to find inside Thompson-Boling Arena. The Volunteers have looked like an NCAA tournament team in front of their home fans, winning all but three games. But until last week, when the Volunteers triumphed at No. 8 Florida, they hadn't won a single game against a Division I team in their road orange jerseys.

Saturday's loss at Alabama, a team without three starters for various reasons, served as a cold, hard

Martin not likely to change starting lineup

Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin doesn't make changes to his starting lineup very often. He doesn't use it simply as a motivational ploy, but it's ended up working out that way.

After their 73-62 victory over Georgia, a game in which the team's second-leading scorer Trae Golden came off the bench for the first time all season, the Volunteers are now 3-0 in games where Martin has tinkered with his typically locked-in starting lineup.

"I never really try to give a message," Martin said. "As a coach, you ask guys to work hard, and if it's not falling, you're not going to take the guy out unless somebody's playing really well at that position."

The problem with Golden, who averages 11 points per game, was his "approach and intensity" and his defense, Martin said. Just because Golden thrived in his bench role Saturday against Georgia, it doesn't mean he'll be back in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against South Carolina.

Tennessee no match for No. 1 Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- Freshman Anthony Davis had 18 points, eight rebounds and seven blocked shots as top-ranked Kentucky beat Tennessee 69-44 on Tuesday night to extend the Wildcats' home winning streak to 48 games.

Kentucky (22-1, 8-0 Southeastern Conference) got off to a sizzling start by hitting its first 11 shots over the opening 11 minutes as the Wildcats won their 14th straight overall in another dominating performance.

The 6-foot-10 Davis has been the biggest star among the Wildcats' starting group of three freshmen and two sophomores who expect to play for a national title in a little over two months.

The Volunteers (10-12, 2-5) were led by Renaldo Woolridge, who hit a career-best five 3-pointers and tied his career-high with 17 points.

Vols' general inconsistency a source of frustration

Rising to the level of its elite competition, dropping down to the level of its less-talented foes, Tennessee has been through its fair share of ups and downs this season.

The highs have been divine. Saturday's upset victory over defending national champion Connecticut served as quite possibly the highest point Tennessee has seen since its 2010 trip to the Elite Eight.

The lows, though, have been a constant source of frustration. Wednesday's ugly overtime loss at Georgia simply shouldn't have happened for a team that's taken down ranked teams such as Florida and Connecticut and hung around with other squads like Duke and Memphis.

Finding the necessary consistency could lead to a postseason trip to the NIT.

"I think our defense gives us a chance to play with anybody," guard Skylar McBee said. "You play a lot of guys, especially in this league, that are really talented offensively. I think if we can neutralize them like we're doing, we're going to have a chance to win

Tennessee Rocks Florida on Rocky Top

The sky might not be falling in Knoxville after all.
After a disappointing football season and a slow start to basketball season, the Tennessee Vounteers (8-7, 1-0) 67-56 victory over the 13th-ranked Florida Gators (12-4, 0-1) Saturday was a much need lift for everyone.
Since his first press conference at UT, head coach Cuonzo Martin preached his teams would play hard, and defensive intensity would be at an all-time high.
Today the Vols defense finally played up to par with that. The Vols held Florida to 56 points, a season low and well below its 85.4 points-per-game average. Florida also shot a season low 35.7 percent from the field.
Martin changed the starting lineup after the disappointing performance against Memphis, starting Josh Richardson and Renaldo Woolridge in place of Kenny Hall and Jordan McRae.
Although Gators head coach Billy Donovan doesn’t expect much scoring from his bench the Gator’s bench was outscored 25-1.
The shake-up to the lineup worked well for the Vols. Hall respond

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Yemi Makanjuola had a career-high 18 points and 11 rebounds off the bench to help Tennessee keep The Citadel at bay in an 86-55 victory Thursday night.

Skylar McBee hit 4 of 5 from 3-point range in the first half for Tennessee (6-6). Two of those launched a 15-3 run that gave the Vols a 31-17 lead 4:31 before halftime.

The Vols shot 55.9 percent (33 of 59) en route to their biggest victory margin this season. The Bulldogs hit 39.3 percent (22 of 56) in their eighth straight loss.
