Hall of Fame Classic canceled because of rain

Poor weather conditions forced the cancellation of Saturday's Hall of Fame Classic at Doubleday Field.

Festivities were moved a block down Main Street into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, where fans were able to interact with about two dozen former major league players who had made the trip to play in the annual exhibition game.

Former pitcher Dennis Rasmussen, who played in two of the previous three games, was happy the fans had a chance to meet some of their heroes. He and other players were stationed throughout the museum, greeting fans and posing for pictures.

The cancellation prevented Dmitri Young from a chance to win the legends hitting contest for a third straight year.

Jered Weaver would be OK with a gay teammate

After the wildly ignorant comments of San Francisco 49ers defensive back Chris Culliver yesterday, you'll (hopefully) be pleased to know that not all professional athletes are total neanderthals. On a video podcast hosted by Robert Fick and Dmitri Young (which is a weird enough story unto itself), Jered Weaver and his brother Jeff made the proclamation that they are totally cool with the idea of having a gay teammate. Here are a few of the comments Jered made when asked about the topic (with a big tip o' the hat to Big League Stew): "If you’re hitting .300 with 40 and 140, bring ‘em on, you know?" "They worked just as hard as us to get up to where we’re at." How very bold of them, right? Well, I guess it is in the world of professional sports where homosexuality is still a major taboo as Culliver reminded us yesterday and as Torii Hunter, coincidentally a former teammate of Weaver, also reminded us with some controversial comments of his ow...

Yankee killer Delmon Young

By MICHAEL J. HAPPYFOXSportsDetroit.com

DETROIT -- Delmon Young came into the 2012 playoffs flailing at balls outside the strike zone and drawing the ire of Tigers fans everywhere.

Now, for the second postseason in a row, he's killing the Yankees.

Young led off the Tigers' fourth inning Tuesday by depositing a Phil Hughes pitch into the Detroit bullpen for a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers -- behind another masterful pitching performance by Justin Verlander -- then held on for a 2-1 victory and a 3-0 lead in the American League Championship Series, which continues Thursday night at Comerica Park.

Young's homer, a line drive that pierced the strong breeze blowing in from left field, was his second of the 2012 ALCS and his fifth against the Yankees over the last two postseasons.

"I knew I hit it hard enough, but we weren't at Yankee Stadium, so I had to wait for it to land another 30 feet for it to go out," said Young, sarcastically commenting on the band-box dimensions of the new ballpark

Former Major Leaguer Dmitri Young has shown that collecting baseball cards isn’t only for kids. But unlike most kids, Young kept his in tip-top condition and was able to profit from pieces of cardboard with depictions of players of years past and present. He sold his rather impressive collection, comprised solely of rookie cards, in an online auction that ended over the weekend. A flurry of last-minute online bidding pushed the grand total accumulated from the sale to $2,461,032.
Nearly 500 of Young’s rookie baseball cards — all graded 10 gem mint, or perfect condition, by Professional Sports Authenticator — were put up for sale by SCP Auctions, a California-based firm.
The biggest cash cows were:

The only 1955 Roberto Clemente Topps ever graded 10 gem mint — $432,690.
One of only two 1954 Hank Aaron Topps ever graded 10 gem mint — $357,594.
The only 1963 Pete Rose Topps ever graded 10 gem mint — $157,365.

Tigers' Young: 'That's not me'

DETROIT --- Delmon Young was back in uniform Friday night, a week after being arrested in New York for an alleged hate crime.

He's hoping that will be the next step in regaining some normality in his life.

Young came off baseball's restricted list at the end of his seven-day suspension, and met with the media before Detroit's game against Chicago. He started the press conference with an apology to the fans, his teammates, the Tigers organization and "anyone that I hurt with my actions."

Young then revealed that he has begun an MLB-supervised treatment for alcohol issues.

"I know for a fact that I wouldn't be here talking to you guys if I hadn't had too much to drink, or if I just didn't go out to drink at all," he said. "Without the alcohol, none of this would have happened, so that's what I need to work on."

On the advice of his attorney, Young did not discuss the particulars of his early morning arrest. He is accused of making anti-Semitic remar

Former MLB Player Dmitri Young Has Amazing Baseball Card Collection

Juan Carlo/Ventura County StarBy Josh DhaniFounderDmitri Young hasn't played in the league since 2008, when he last played with the Washington Nationals. There was also news recently that he wanted to make a comeback to the MLB. However, still retired and recently losing a whopping 70 pounds, Young was caught up with Yahoo! Sports Steve Henson. And boy, the news is interesting.Apparently, Young is like many baseball fans in that he collects baseball cards. However, his collection is very valuable. In fact, it's legendary. One of the cards he owns is a 1954 Hank Aaron rookie card. There's only been two made of that and the former National owns one of them! "What can I say, I'm the nerd," he said. You can take a look at Young's amazing collection here.

Pirates make right move by not signing Young

If it were 2008 it wouldn’t surprise us at all to hear that the Pirates were signing 38-year-old who hasn’t played in the majors since ’08 and weighed 300 pounds the last time he was relevant to man first base for them. But this is a whole new ball game…we hope.
Dmitri Young worked out for the Buccos yesterday in Bradenton and rumor has it that at 70 pounds lighter than usual, Young didn’t look half bad at the plate or in the field. Nonetheless, the Buccos still decided not to offer him a contract.
Nothing against Young, his new physique and mental rehab could’ve worked miracles for the old timers career, and maybe he’ll be picked up by another MLB team and resurrect his career and reputation. But the Pirates aren’t in a position to take the risk that the opposite occurs. They made the right move by passing on another over-the-hill experiment.
Young’s age isn’t the only factor why it was a good idea to pass on his services. He was an all-star back in the day but then he went throug...

Dimitri Young Works out for Hurdle at Pirate City

PITTSBURGH — Veteran Dmitri Young worked out in front of Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle and staff today at Pirate City, according to Tom Singer of MLB.com.
It was reported last week that Young, who hasn’t played in the Majors since 2008, would travel to Bradenton, Fla., to work out in front of the Pirates.
According to Singer, the 38-year-old Young held up well to rigorous workouts at the field –he ran the bases, took balls to first base, threw from the outfield and hit from both sides of the plate.
Young has been trying to revive a baseball career and even went to the Winter Meetings in Dallas Texas to make his case in front of front office people. Young is also reported to be in great shape, down to 232 pounds from 295 he weighed during the 2008 season.
Hurdle said his interest in Young is “in the early stages” according to Singer, and has had conversations about him internally. Young hit .280 with four home runs, and 10 RBI over 50 games with the Washington Nationals his last season in the big leag

Dmitri Young to work out for Pirates

tweeted:
Dmitri Young (nicknamed “Da Meat Hook”) hasn’t played since 2008 and has had some serious weight and health issues in the past. But now, the 38-year old has slimmed down big-time and is looking to make a comeback. ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick wrote a good piece about Young’s efforts to make it back to the bigs, and it includes this awesome quote that should inspire dieters everywhere:
“I’m not eating like a Viking now,” Young said. “I’ve learned to hold off, and when I do get my treat, I don’t abuse it. I’ll eat one slice of pecan pie and call it a day, instead of eating half the pie or the whole pie.”
This is a long shot, but there would certainly be nothing wrong with giving Young a minor league deal and a spring training invite to see what he could do. He’s always been an excellent hitter, but defense would obviously be a major concern (along with the fact that he hasn’t played in four years). Still, this could be something to keep an eye on if Young’s workout goes well

Pirates working out Dmitri Young

PITTSBURGH — Jim Bowden of ESPN reported today that the Pirates and Manager Clint Hurdle plan on working out first baseman Dmitri Young next week at Pirate City in Bradenton, Florida.
Young, 38, hasn’t played in the Majors since 2008 when he hit .280 with four home runs and 10 RBI over 50 games with the Washington Nationals.
In an article by Jerry Crasnick of ESPN in January, Young has been working hard on making a comeback. Towards the end of his career, Young weighed in between 290 and 310 pounds, but is said to check in currently at 232. In the article it was mentioned that Young traveled to the winter meetings in Dallas to make his case to the front-office people in hopes of landing a job. While in Dallas, Young reported to have 10 warm leads from teams.
In his prime, Young batted .300 or better from 1998 through 2001 with the Cincinnati Reds. In 2003 with the Detroit Tigers, Young hit .297 with a career-high 29 home runs and a .909 OPS. In 2006, Young dealt with issues both on and off the field. H

Dmitri Young Is All Skinny Now

Dmitri Young, our sixth-most blogged-about person of 2008, weighed in at 291 pounds once, the year after batting .320, and he’s looked pretty much the same ever since.

Here’s what Da Meathook is looking like now, though, (via Nats Enquirer):

There’s no telling what the secret to his success is (massage therapy perhaps?), but word is he’s lost 70 pounds, which is 20 more than two months ago when he was playing winter ball in Venezuela.
Da Meathook is making another comeback, you see, and the Nats need depth at 1B (really, they do). I don’t see why this can’t happen, or, more accurately, I really want this to happen.
