Design The 2010 Reds Infield

While waiting for the Reds to make their first offseason moves, we’ll continue to debate how the Reds should shape the 2010 team by looking at the possibilities in the infield. So far, we’ve opined on the outfield, and more recently the starting rotation.
Catcher: Hanigan should be the starting catcher. The Reds have to make a decision on Ramon Hernandez’s $8.5 million option by Nov 15. John Fay reported Thursday that the Reds will not pick up the expensive option, but that...

Acquiring a new catcher is probably the top priority this off-season. Gregg Zaun may not return, Dioner Navarro turned back into a pumpkin, and the other 40-man options are reserves at best. With limited free agent options (read: budget) the Rays are probably getting said new catcher via trade. This means, the catcher likely won't be a heaven-s...

The biggest news to come out of the Gregg Zaun acquisition was that we would have ourselves a platoon behind the plate. Gregg Zaun would play against right handed pitchers and Dioner Navarro would play against lefties; and it made sense.
As of August 15th, their splits looked like this...

Kneel Before Zaun!

One of the newest Devil Rays, veteran catcher Gregg Zaun, had a sparkling Devil Ray Moment Sunday afternoon. Pinch-hitting in the bottom of the 8th inning with two outs in a tie game, Grand Slam. Devil Rays win.
Earlier in the game, Zaun was shown on the bench, and I thought he looked like a slimmer John Kruk (albeit with twice the testicles). See for yourselves:

Or maybe it’s just the mullets. But hey, who doesn’t love a nice mullet, right?
Meanwhile, Zaun is also really into N.W.A. and Def Leppard. And he’s Rick Dempsey’s nephew!
With the grand slam, Zahn has now homered twice in his first 16 Devil Ray at-bats. (He also homered Friday night off overrated Toronto trade bait Roy “Billie” Halladay.)...

Carl Crawford bunted today and I hate it, hate it, hate it. Crawford is basically a league average hitter against southpaws over the last three years. With a man on second and nobody out 1.19 runs are expected, a runner on third with one out has a RE of 0.98. So, by bunting, the Rays actually lowered the amount of runs expected by 0.11. Even if ...

Rays Complete Gregg Zaun Trade; Send Rhyne Hughes to Baltimore

The Rays announced Rhyne Hughes as the player to be named later in the deal that sent Gregg Zaun from the Orioles to the Rays. The Rays will also receive cash from the Orioles to offset some of Zaun's salary. Hughes, 25, was an 8th round selection for the Rays in the 2004 draft. After posting good numbers in Double-A this year (.252/.340.500), Hughes was promoted to Triple-A Durham.

Per the Rob Long Show, the Rays have acquired Gregg Zaun.
Let me speak for everyone when I say
YESSSSSSSSSSSS
I've wanted Zaun for a very long time now and he's exactly what this team needs. He can back-up, he can start, he's an easy upgrade over any catcher we have and he's cheap for next year.
We'll see what the price is, but wow, gold sta...

The Orioles' Gregg Zaun has been mocked all year as nothing but a "placeholder" for super-prospect Matt Wieters. The perennial backup catcher, however, outshines young Wieters and every other pro athlete in the most important category of all: Flash animation. Open up Zaun's official website and you're greeted by a silhouetted swordsman. This mysterious masked man slashes out a "Z" with his blade.
