W: And finally when can we expect to hear news of your signing?

G: It'll be done before the end of this week, before the Winter Meetings. All I can say right now is there is more than one club involved and not all of them are in the American League.

Rays talking to Zaun...

Gregg Zaun is a 38 y/o switch hitting catcher, he's been with nine teams in 14 seasons and holds a lifetime BA of .251. In 1997 he won a World Series with the Florida Marlins as the backup to Charlie Johnson. Not only is he older by catcher's standards but he's only good for about 80-90 games and I don't want to go into a season relying on Santos for 70 games. While some see him as an inexpensive option, I hope the Mets pass and allow the Rays to renegotiate his contract. The R...

The Rays are said to be interested in discussing a long-term extension with Carl Crawford. If the team does decide to move him, however, the Mets and Braves have expressed interest.
The Rangers and White Sox are among the teams interested in acquiring B.J. Upton.

Nothing unexpected on the options part. Although it will be interesting to see if they attempt to get Zaun to re-sign.

Crawford won't reach free agency, Zaun and Shouse have options which may be declined, and Springer is a true free agent. The questions now are whether any of them will be offered arbitration in order to gain a supplemental round compensation pick. Given his age (and potential salary) it seems rathe...

The biggest news to come out of the Gregg Zaun acquisition was that we would have ourselves a platoon behind the plate. Gregg Zaun would play against right handed pitchers and Dioner Navarro would play against lefties; and it made sense.
As of August 15th, their splits looked like this...

Kneel Before Zaun!

One of the newest Devil Rays, veteran catcher Gregg Zaun, had a sparkling Devil Ray Moment Sunday afternoon. Pinch-hitting in the bottom of the 8th inning with two outs in a tie game, Grand Slam. Devil Rays win.
Earlier in the game, Zaun was shown on the bench, and I thought he looked like a slimmer John Kruk (albeit with twice the testicles). See for yourselves:

Or maybe it’s just the mullets. But hey, who doesn’t love a nice mullet, right?
Meanwhile, Zaun is also really into N.W.A. and Def Leppard. And he’s Rick Dempsey’s nephew!
With the grand slam, Zahn has now homered twice in his first 16 Devil Ray at-bats. (He also homered Friday night off overrated Toronto trade bait Roy “Billie” Halladay.)...

Carl Crawford bunted today and I hate it, hate it, hate it. Crawford is basically a league average hitter against southpaws over the last three years. With a man on second and nobody out 1.19 runs are expected, a runner on third with one out has a RE of 0.98. So, by bunting, the Rays actually lowered the amount of runs expected by 0.11. Even if ...

Per the Rob Long Show, the Rays have acquired Gregg Zaun.
Let me speak for everyone when I say
YESSSSSSSSSSSS
I've wanted Zaun for a very long time now and he's exactly what this team needs. He can back-up, he can start, he's an easy upgrade over any catcher we have and he's cheap for next year.
We'll see what the price is, but wow, gold sta...
