Decontaminate Corey Ivy

Be sure to coat Corey Ivy in all the anti-bacterial spray the team has on hand before allowing him into team facilities. The Steelers picked up the former Ratbird, along with linebacker Rocky Boiman, to keep with matters special teamsian. Which it would have to be, because Ivy can't do dick in pass coverage. But then neither really could the guy he'll be replacing on the roster, Keiwan Ratliff. That signing really threw me in the offseason. Ratliff was never well regarded by the Colts ...

The Designed Rush, Week 12: Football Still Won't Make You Beat Your Wife

Football detractors have tried seemingly forever to make hay on the claim that embracing a sport steeped in violence and brutality is harmful to our collective culture. Many attempt to do this by laying out the often debunked argument that there exists a link between watching football and heightened domestic violence.

One new study, however, may give renewed credence to some of those claims. Economists Gordon Dahl and David Card have found that instances of domestic violence do in fact sp...

Yesterday's five most valuable players: Lions, Raiders and Cheifs

Matthew Stafford(notes), Quarterback, Detroit
Lions. Is there any better scenario for a rookie quarterback? In just
one play, he labels himself as tough, clutch, poised, a gamer and possessor
of any other vague, non-quantifiable quality a quarterback can have. At the very
least, that play earns him a pass from the media for the rest of the year. He
can go totally JaMarcus over the next six games, completing 19 percent of his
passes, throwing zero touchdowns and 27 interceptions, and eve...

Overtime provides relief for Giants, Chiefs

The New York Giants needed their overtime win far more than the Kansas City Chiefs did theirs, but both teams came away with victories past regulation today. In the Giants' case, their 34-31 win over the Atlanta Falcons ended a four-game losing streak that had them in third place in the NFC East, and at risk of missing the playoffs if they didn't turn it around. It wasn't pretty -- Eli Manning(notes) looked a bit off at times and New York's formerly dominant rushing attack cou...

Can't Blame This One On Anyone Who Doesn't Wear Black And Gold.....

At 1 PM this afternoon, I set out to find an Internet feed of this game. I would have gone to the bar, but A) I'm broke as a joke, and B) I'm broke as a joke. Fortunately, several minutes later, I was able to find a great feed. Even more fortunately, I had missed the opening kickoff, on which the Steelers set what I understand to be a record for Special Teams ineptitude unmatched in NFL history. Still, at least I could see the game, and things were really starting to improve. By the e...

Philadelphia Eagles: Are the Linebackers Too Young?

The 2007 Eagles defense was a top-10 unit. The offseason additions of Asante Samuel and Chris Clemons should only improve the defense's ranking.

The 2007 defense that was very good could be dominant in 2008.

The defensive line boasts two young, promising tackles in Bunkley and Patterson. The ends are lead by Pro Bowler Trent Cole and free agent signee Chris Clemons. Together the two combined for 20.5 sacks in 2007.

The quality at the cornerback position is downri...

Draft Stock Rise Thanks In Part To YouTube

Didn't go to a big Division I school? Haven't had the chance to put up big numbers on the field? Maybe you just have not had the opportunity to be seen by the right scouts, but have a lot of potential at the next level. Do not fret. A few years ago, you might have been out of luck. In today's web 2.0 world, though, you and your agent may be still be able to impress a team enough to draft you.

Don't believe me? Check out Andy Studebaker, who played at a DIII school and was injured at the end of his senior season, but still got drafted this summer by the Philadelphia Eagles. His first thank-you card should go to Google for its YouTube product. Here is a quote from his agent:

"It would be a complete fabrication to say the YouTube videos had any role in exposing Andy to NFL teams, because all 32 teams knew exactly who he was. But I do think it was a tipping factor at the end."

To think that YouTube had any role in Andy's eventual selection is a revolutionary thought. It is hope for those out there who think in a Sports Agency 2.0 mind-frame. As an agent, you must always think outside of the box, and if that means putting your client's highlight reel on YouTube, then you better be doing just that.

"Teams were already in their [draft] meetings, and many of them asked [for the tape] to be overnighted to them," Wright said. "I said, 'I'm just going to post it on YouTube and you can see it right away.' They said, 'Cool.' So we shot out the link to everybody within an hour of the workout being over."

Next, a player will find out that he is drafted by a team because its GM posts the news on his Facebook wall..

Eagles select another linebacker, Andy Studebaker

The Eagles have finished up their 6th round picks with their second linebacker in a row, Andy Studebaker, an outside linebacker from tiny Wheaton College. He played defensive end in college, but he projects to be a LB in the NFL. Studebaker was voted to the Associated Press Little All-America team as a junior, but as a senior he played only five games before he suffered a sprained foot. As a junior he finished with 17.5 sacks, so he's a big time pass rusher.

Notice the trend of injured...
