Jets ink Punter Malone, re-sign Marcus Dixon

On Tuesday the New York Jets brought in several punters. Robert Malone, formerly with the San Diego Chargers and Shawn Powell, a rookie free agent who had been with the Buffalo Bills, to compete with incumbent T.J. Conley. The Jets wound up signing Robert Malone and subsequently releasing T.J. Conley, now less than a week before the opener.

T.J. Conley seemed assured of the starting punter job after the New York Jets brought in Spencer Lanning for the final preseason game and his average dropped with each subsequent punt. Robert Malone had been with Jacksonville and Tampa Bay in 2010, as well as Detroit last season, and San Diego in this past preseason. His statistics show that he has just over a 42 yard average in his short NFL career.

In another roster move made on Tuesday the Jets re-signed defensive end Marcus Dixon, and released the recently claimed off waivers defensive tackle Isaako Aaitui. Many Jets fans, myself included, are glad to hear that Dixon wasn't gone for...

Jets cut Conley, Aatui; Dixon says he's back

The New York Jets released punter T.J. Conley and nose tackle Isaako Aatui on Tuesday, five days before the team's regular-season opener against the Buffalo Bills.

Defensive tackle Marcus Dixon also wrote on Twitter that he re-signed with the Jets. Dixon's agent, Howard Shatsky, also tweeted that his client is returning to the Jets. The team did not immediately announce that it brought back Dixon, who was cut on Saturday when New York signed Aatui.

The 27-year-old Conley averaged 42.7 yards per punt last season, and tied for third in the NFL by dropping 32 kicks inside the 20-yard line. The Jets brought in some competition for Conley, who beat out Travis Baltz during training camp and Spencer Lanning last week, and his job appeared to be safe. He was the only punter on the team's roster.

''Got cut by the Jets today,'' Conley wrote on Twitter. ''Pretty bummed but God has a plan for me and I trust in it. Looking forward to a new start wherever I end up.''

Jets Release DT Marcus Dixon, Claim DT Isaako Aaitui, WR Clyde Gates

The Jets released DT Marcus Dixon, a dependable asset on the line who could play multiple positions, Conor Orr of the Newark Star-Ledger reports. The announcement was made by Dixon's agent, Howard Shatsky.
The Jets also signed former Dolphins practice squad defensive tackle Isaako Aaitui, according to a tweet from Aaitui's agent, David Canter.
Aaitui, a 6-3, 322-pound nose tackle that, reports say, fits well as a nose in the 3-4 scheme, went undrafted out of UNLV back in 2011.
Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger reports the Jets also claimed 49ers tight end Konrad Reuland and released TE Dedrick Epps, likely to make room for Reuland on the roster. Source: The Redzone Attached Thumbnails

2011 Analysis: As the season wore on, and DeVito wore down, the Jets played Marcus Dixon a lot more, and while there were some hiccups at the start of his larger role, Dixon played well enough to warrant a larger role in the Jets defense moving forward. Once Dixon was given the chance he looked raw – getting knocked off the ball some, but also contributing with some timely pressures and sacks for the Jets. Dixon has had a lot of adversity in his life, but at 27, he’s now matured, has the physical skills to play in the NFL, and the smarts to play defensive line for Rex Ryan.

Marcus Dixon on Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel Tonight

Jets DL Marcus Dixon will be included in a segment on HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel on Tuesday November, 22nd (10:00-11:00PM ET/PT). Dixon is the subject of Real Sports because of the controversial imprisonment of him as a younger man – at which time Real Sports reported on his case, and which has followed his progress since then. In this week’s segment, Gumbel reconnects with the 27-year-old Dixon, who has thrived since his release from prison.
