The Tight End Conundrum of the New York Jets

Ahhhh the rebuilding year. Another failed campaign means an eager fan base calling for heads and demanding a quick and timely rebuild. There are many pillars to a successful rebuild: management, coaching, and the all important on field talent (to name a few). It is the talent that most fans tend to harp on and at no position on the New York Jets’ roster is there less of it than at tight end. New general manager John Idzik has deftly filled many perceived holes on the roster including: quarterback, running back, and offensive line. He’s brought in depth players at linebacker and fostered competition with talented defenders early in the draft. However, tight end is one of the spots that he seems to have neglected.

Idzik’s failure to add talent at the tight end position was not a result of a weak free agent class. Some tight ends of note that got new contracts this offseason include: Delanie Walker (SF – TN), Fred Davis (WAS), Jared Cook (TN-STL), Ben Watson (CLE – NO), Brandon Meyers...

Former college basketball player turned Chiefs tight end admits: 'I ain't there'

KANSAS CITY, Mo. You know Jimmy Graham?

Antonio Gates?

Tony Gonzalez?

Demetrius Harris isnt well, he isnt, um, there yet.

Ive never studied them, but Ive seen (people) compare me to them, Harris, the former collegiate basketball player at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, said Saturday, where hes learning the NFL tight end ropes on the fly at the Kansas City Chiefs rookie minicamp. But I aint there.

He aint. This is a long-term project, a classic Bob Vila deal, a fixer-upper, a ride that needs some serious pimping along the way. Harris hasnt played football competitively in more than three years, when he was an all-state prep at Jacksonville, Ark., just outside of Little Rock.

But what he does have are tools. The NFL loves tools. Harris is 6-foot-7-ish, runs a 40-yard dash in the 4.5 range and sports a vertical leap of 36.5 inches. In an era where the two most popular limbs on the pro passing tree are the fade and the quick slant, theres a market for quick, rangy types who can flat-out pluck it. Everybody wants to

Draft Zone Spotlight: Corey Jones, LB, Lane College
Corey Jones was the leader of the Lane linebacker core. This kid is a very fierce and aggressive tackler, who racks up tackles. He is a very good inside player and could be looked at to play the mike role in the NFL. I believe he has the speed to cover the tight end as well in most packages in NFL. Keep an eye on this sleeper linebacker because he is a very solid football player.

Draft Zone Spotlight: Ben Pister, DL, Missouri Western
While everyone talks about David Bass from Missouri Western, not many people speak about Ben Pister. Ben Pister was probably one of the most disruptive defensive linemen in division 2 last Season. He is a freak athlete and is someone that I have fell in love with on film. When watching film of David Bass, I kept noticing Pister throwing offensive lineman around like rag dolls. Pister could be the third player from this Griffons team to make it to the NFL. I think Michael Hill, David Bass and Ben Pister will all have a legitimate shot at the next level.
How many teams were recruiting you coming out of high school and how did you make your decision?
Missouri western was really the only school that was serious about recruiting me which made the decision to go there very easy. The fact the coach partridge was willing to take a chance on me meant a lot to me.

Tony Gonzalez: Saying Goodbye to an All Time Great

Although the sports world seems to be in love with the fact that this is the final season for Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis, there is another player who is arguably the best to ever play his position that was in the same position this past Sunday. But since Tony Gonzalez isn’t as eccentric as Lewis, only the biggest NFL fans seem to have known about it.

It’s hard to call the guy who set the Tight End standard for this league “arguably” the best to ever play his position in the league. After all, if we’re just going by statistics, he blows away his closest competitors. He leads Shannon Sharpe by 427 career receptions and has 4, 208 more receiving yards. His next closest competitor on the all time touchdowns for a tight end is Antonio Gates and Gonzo has a comfortable twenty touchdown lead over him.
Off of statistics alone, Tony Gonzalez is the best tight end to ever put on an NFL uniform. The one knock against him was that he won his first playoff game ever just over two weeks ago. Ha...

NFL Fantasy Football: Should You Ignore Raiders WR Denarius Moore?

Once considered a quality No. 2 option for fantasy football teams, Denarius Moore has fallen on hard times. The Oakland Raiders second-year wide receiver hasn’t even been a flex-play option as of late.

From Week 2-10, Moore, 23, averaged 71.9 yards per game with five TDs in eight games.
That’s an average of double-digit fantasy points in non-PPR (points per reception) leagues.
However, in his last four games, Moore has scored only once and his high water mark is 43 yards.
During this stretch, Moore is averaging two receptions each week for 25.8 yards per game.
Can he be trusted going forward?
Darrius Heyward-Bey has become a more reliable threat at receiver for the Raiders, and over the past two weeks, Rod Streater has been the top option on the team at the position with seven receptions for 196 yards and a score.
And albeit he didn’t show it on Thursday Night Football with only one reception for seven yards in the loss to the Denver Bronc...

Kansas City Chiefs: 2012 Schedule Breakdown

Despite the Kansas City Chiefs accruing a massive amount of injuries to their players and finishing last in 2011, they did end with a 7-9 record. If the Chiefs had a few things go their way, or if players were able to stay healthy, they may have ended up winning the AFC West, (Denver won the division with an 8-8 record).

However, looking at the Chiefs schedule going into the 2012 season, it looks like they may have a difficult road ahead. For one, they will square off against six teams that made the playoffs last season, three of those teams they will face in the first five games. This season the Chiefs with have the daunting task of taking on opponents from the AFC North which includes three of those six playoff teams. As well as the NFC South, in which every team could be a potential threat this year.

There are a few things that play in Kansas City's favor. There bye week comes in week seven, which is smack dab in the middle of the season, so they should be plenty rested to...

NFL Mt. Rushmore-Kansas City Chiefs

Every NFL Franchise has it’s own pantheon of football gods. That group of players who are not only historic in terms of talent, but even more than that, these are the players who you have to talk about when you tell the story of your team. This is part of a 32 article series where I tell you who I would put among that elite group. For this, it’s Mt. Rushmore. 4 players only. The 4 heads you would carve on a mountain that would live forever as the greatest in franchise history.
Now, I don’t profess to know the history of every franchise in the league. So, I did my research. And part of that was reaching out to you fans. But if you don’t agree with the 4 guys I have selected, come find me on Twitter at www.twitter.com/nfldraftboard and let me hear what you think.

NFL Draft: Kansas City Chiefs All-Time Best Draft Picks

With the eleventh pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs [would be absolutely thrilled to] select…any player who could come even remotely close to the success and production of one of these twelve former Chiefs draft picks.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m itching for the draft this year. Last year we had the huge cloud of the lockout hanging over our heads so the draft had a twinge of worry that we’d never see those guys who were picked playing that year anyway. This still young offseason in 2012 has brought excitement already via a frenzied first month of free agency and should only bring more drama once the draft gets here.

As great as the draft is for football fans, it’s even better this year for Chiefs fans. The team does not have the typical “glaring needs” that it usually does entering the draft. That means they have the luxury of looking for the best available player when they are on the clock. Typically you will find that there is a higher likelihood ...

Steelers Forcing the Issue with Hines Ward

Hines Ward is very very close to some huge Wide Receiver Milestones. He is 9 yards away from getting 12,000 yards. He would be only the 19th player to do so in the history of the NFL. Ward is also only 15 receptions away from getting 1000 for his career. He would be only the 8th player in NFL history to complete that mark. Ward is only behind Tony Gonzalez on the active list in receptions.
Ward was pushed back to fifth on the depth chart only two weeks back. It looked as if he may only get to the receiving yards milestone. Then came Sunday. Ward was targeted 6 times. Most of those targets were on screen passes just to get Ward his receptions. He now needs 3 catches a game to get to 1000 this season.
It seems as if the Steelers are forcing the issue to get Ward these numbers. Ward made 4 catches for 21 yards on Sunday Night. That is just barely over 5 yards a catch. Three of his 4 catches were for 5 yards or less. Two of them were for 2 yards or less. Ward is catching ...
