Providence Bruins and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins brawl during AHL playoffs

On Saturday night the Providence Bruins were unable to close out their Calder Cup AHL playoff series against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins as they lost 4-0 and the Penguins forced a game six. The Bruins refused to just take the loss quietly though and the brawl that ensued certainly set the stage for an interesting game six on Monday.
The Bruins and Penguins combined for 117 penalty minutes with the majority coming from Bruins forward Graham Mink, who received a match penalty for attempting to injure Penguins goalie Brad Theissen. Mink went after Theissen after Theissen had frozen the puck and started throwing punches at him for no reason as Theissen laid there and tried to protect himself. The referee did a good job to dive on top of Mink to try and break the two up, since Mink was just wailing on Theissen. According to AHL rules, Mink will be fined $200 and the penalty will be reviewed by the league for supplemental discipline.
Two minutes later after Penguins forward Pau...

Your Normal, Every Day AHL Playoff Brawl

((HT: AHLPenguins/Puck Daddy))

The Eastern Conference semifinals are now heading to a Game 6 after the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins shut out the Providence Bruins 4-0 last night.

But, a most chippy series go, there are a certain amount of fireworks- and last night gave it to us...

The two teams combined for 113 penalty minutes- most of them when Bruins forward Graham Mink fell on top of Penguins goalie Brad Theissen after he froze the puck. Mink had had a tete-a-tete with Theissen a few minutes before:

Here's the full highlights from Scranton-Wilkes Barre and the fight starts about the 7:00 mark...
With another round a minute later in the highlights...

You gotta like Pens ply-by-play guy Tom Grace and all of his warnings- partial or otherwise...

And, for the HQ, it was interesting to see that Garnet Exelby is in Providence and that Riley Holzapfel and Steve MacIntyre are with WBS... nothing like knowing your enforcers and old draft picks

Providence Bruins 4, Connecticut Whale 1

Providence, RI, January 20, 2013 – David Warsofsky had a goal and an assist Sunday for the Providence Bruins, who outshot the Connecticut Whale 38-15 at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center Providence on the way to a 4-1 win.

J.T. Miller scored the only Whale goal. Ryan Spooner and Justin Florek had two assists each for the Bruins.

The Whale led for much of the first period, after Miller scored on Connecticut’s first shot of the game at 4:26. After Sean Collins lost the puck in the left-wing corner, Brandon Mashinter was able to get it to Miller between the hash marks, and Miller buried a slap shot behind Bruin goaltender Niklas Svedberg (14 saves). Mashinter picked up his first point in three games with the Whale with the lone assist on the goal.

Providence responded, though, with two goals in a span of 1:25 late in the period.

Bruin goal-scoring leader Jamie Tardif got his 18th of the year at 16:32. Spooner found Tardif unchecked in front of the Whale net, and Tardif pou...

Hershey Running Away With AHL Lead

The Hershey Bears (Washington Capitals affiliate) have a four point lead over the rest of the AHL with 55 points. They have a 24-15 record with seven regulation tie points. This is the team with the best offence in the league. The two top scorers in the AHL are both Hershey players in Keith Aucoin and Chris Bourque. Jacob Micflikier and Graham Mink are other Hershey players among the top scorers in the league. This team has averaged 3.84 goals per game. By comparison, the Boston Bruins lead the NHL with 3.58 goals per game.

Perhaps the team most likely to catch Hershey is the Abbotsford Heat (Calgary Flames affiliate). They are in a three way tie with 51 points behind the Bears. Abbotsford has a 24-14 record with only three regulation tie points. Neglecting the regulation ties, their record would have them in first place. Abbotsford has to overcome significant travel issues. They are in the large AHL West Division. Its other teams are in Texas and Oklahoma.

Veteran Christensen Joins Whale

By Bruce Berlet
The Connecticut Whale added a new player to their roster Wednesday, center Erik Christensen. And they could have a second new player, wing Wojtek Wolski, in the near future.
Christensen agreed to a two-week conditioning assignment request by the New York Rangers. He has one goal and four assists in 20 games with the Blueshirts.
Christensen, 28, told the New York media that it was “never a question of saying ‘no,’ it was ‘yes’ all the way.”
“I spoke to my agent, and we decided this was the best thing for me,” Christensen said. “I haven’t played a lot. I really love hockey. I mean that’s why I play the game. That’s more the point, I just want to play hockey. I understand there are things I need to work on, but I just want to be on the ice. I’m excited to get some games again. This will give me the chance to go and play. Plus, it will keep me prepared in case something happens and I need to go back in the lineup.”
Coach John Tortorella said Christensen came to a

Tanski Contributes Beyond Scoresheet

By Bruce Berlet
When Scott Tanski roofed a shot under the crossbar to win his second practice-ending shootout in three days last week, he was mobbed by virtually all of his Connecticut Whale teammates, many of whom leaped into the plexiglass to try to get at the personable curly-haired redhead.
“It might have been my new stick,” a smiling Tanski said of his latest skills competition victory. “I like to keep it light in practice, and I know the guys knew I hadn’t had a goal yet, so when I win the shootout, it’s pretty special. We’d won a few games, and I just go to practice and try to have fun and work on a lot of things, though a shootout isn’t my specialty. I’ll leave that to Newbs (Kris Newbury) and Zucc (Mats Zuccarello) because they have some pretty moves. I don’t think too much, just think, ‘Shoot the puck,’ and I was lucky to squeeze a few in there. It must be some confidence with that new stick.”
Tanski soaked in all the adulation, though he would have preferred if he had bee

Whale Roll Again, Beat Hershey Bears 4-2

Connecticut Whale 4, Hershey Bears 2
By Brian Ring
Hartford, CT, November 29, 2011 - The Connecticut Whale defeated the Hershey Bears, 4-2, Tuesday night at the XL Center in Hartford. Pavel Valentenko recorded the game-winning goal, Jordan Owens had two assists and Chad Johnson made 26 saves to earn the win in net.
The Whale once again rallied from a first period deficit, erasing a 1-0 Hershey lead in the first period, while winning the game late in regulation after giving up a third-period equalizer.
“It was tough to give up the game-tying goal,” said Whale head coach Ken Gernander. “But they stuck with it and got the win.”
The Bears and the Whale traded first period goals, with Chris Bourque capitalizing on Hershey’s league-leading power-play at 12:03 of the opening frame. Keith Aucoin took over sole possession of the AHL scoring lead with an assist on the goal, on a night that he would register points number 29 and 30.

Bell Stepping up with Big Plays for Whale

By Bruce Berlet
After Tim Erixon had another strong game for the Connecticut Whale last week, including a personal North American pro best of three assists, veteran defenseman Brendan Bell offered kudos about how the Swedish rookie blueliner handled his reassignment from the parent New York Rangers.
“With young players, you’re here to learn, and it takes some time because (the AHL) isn’t an easy league to play in,” said Bell, who played one game with the Rangers after being signed as a free agent in the offseason and before being sent down a second time Oct. 25. “But you hone your craft and you bide your time, and the thing about Tim that’s been good is that he hasn’t been frustrated, he hasn’t pouted, he hasn’t done any of that stuff since he’s been here (Oct. 29). He’s just trying to learn and get better, and he’ll probably get there (the NHL) quicker because of that.”
Much the same about not pouting could be said for Bell, a healthy scratch on Nov. 13 at St. John’s, where he

In an Autumn of Challenge, I’m Counting Special Blessings This Thanksgiving

I thought I knew what a really bad clock was — the one that counted down the Capitals’ demise in game 7 here against the Pens a couple of springs back. Not a terrific reckoning of time to be sure that night. But no way that moment in time had anything on the really bad clock. That’s the one you survey incessantly while your dreamgirl is in a doctor’s office getting a verdict on bloodwork related to a cancer concern. She’s there in the office because the verdict for some reason can’t be rendered over the phone. You’re somewhat unproductive at work during that hour. That clock I encountered late in August, on a Friday, for the first time in my life, and I knew, after the hour that seemed to take three days, that I’d have no normal autumn. Hockey was the furthest thing from my mind.
Angela’s family has 10 seasons tickets for the Hershey Bears. That’s but one of a couple of hundred novel facets signifying my lottery ticket number being called in meeting her. Some manner of family summi...
