Joan Guzman to face Vincente Mosquera for interim strap in May

Acquinity Sports has announced that an agreement has been reached regarding an Interim World Boxing Association super lightweight title fight, featuring a pair of past world champions, Joan "Little Tyson" Guzman and Vincente "El Loco" Mosquera, tentatively scheduled for May 31 at a venue to be determined.

Guzman (33-1-1, 20 KOs), a 1996 Dominican Republic Olympian now living in Miami, suffered his first loss as a professional this past November, dropping an eighth-round technical decision to Khabib Allakhverdiev for the WBA championship (Danny Garcia is the WBA Super 140-pound champion). Guzman suffered a knee injury when he was tossed to the canvas, leading to the fight being halted by the referee Luis Pabon.
Guzman's promoter, Acquinity Sports, requested an immediate rematch with Allakhverdiev, based on the mishandling of the event by Pabon. Instead, the WBA granted an Interim title fight between WBA #5 Guzman and WBA #9 Mosquera, a...

Javier Fortuna Aces Cristobal Cruz Test

In an intriguing doubleheader on ESPN Friday Nights from Las Vegas, we learned a couple of new things about a few young fighters that share the oversight of Sampson Lewkowicz, who manages both fighters and is largely responsible for their rise.
In the main event, 22-year old Javier Fortuna of the Dominican Republic gave himself a nine-day early birthday present, starching well-traveled Tijuana-based journeyman Cristobal Cruz inside of two rounds in their scheduled 10-round clash.
Fortuna (20-0, 15 KOs) bothered Cruz with his power early, dropping him with some wide-swining stuff inside of Cruz's slower unorthodox punches early in the round. Cruz used all the veteran tricks he could in order to remain on his feet, pulling Fortuna to the canvas a number of times and falling to the ground at least once on his own.
In the 2nd round, however, Cruz (39-14-3, 23 KOs) was unable to survive his much younger opponent, ultimately having his night ended by a highlight-reel overhand left...

Top 10 best junior featherweights of all-time

The Ten Greatest Super Bantamweight Boxers in History
At the time of this division’s creation in the 70’s--people wondered what was the need for a pit stop between bantam and featherweight--a mere 8 pound spread. Junior featherweight seemed unnecessary--4 pounds away from the more glamor weight classes of 118 and 126. But 35+ years later, it is now an accepted division in the sport.
The great fighters in this weight class are numerous and the battles they waged unforgettable. Some great fighters who fought at 122 are not even on this list, having not stayed at 122 for very long. Others made their careers here. And some are in the middle. It’s a bit of a tricky class to rate, constantly faced with the issue of what’s more important--greatness or body of work. There’s a little bit of both in this list. Enjoy!

When it comes to obvious choices for #1 fighters in divisions, there aren’t many. As we work our way down in weight, there have only been 3 so far-...

Tyson vs. Lewis 10 years ago today; Guess who was on the undercard?

10 Year Anniversary of Mike Tyson vs. Lennox Lewis; Manny Pacquiao Appeared on Undercard
Ten years ago on this day, June 8, 2002, Mike Tyson met Lennox Lewis in their hugely anticipated heavyweight showdown in Memphis, Tennessee. Little did we know at the time that Lewis would only fight once more after that, and that his thorough thrashing of Tyson would mark the official end of Iron Mike's relevance as a fighter (OK, well some people could have told you that much). But also relevant as we look back on Tyson vs. Lewis on its 10 year anniversary, is that a certain would be 8-division world champion was fighting on the undercard, Manny Pacquiao.

On June 8, 2002 in Memphis, Pacquiao was fighting for just the third time in the United States. He was defending his IBF super bantamweight title against Jorge Eliecer Julio, and won via 2nd round TKO. He captured the belt against Lehlo Ledwaba about a year earlier, and in between had fought to a technic...

Famous Fight Fan: Mark Kozelek

“Why have they gone/Fell by leather/So alone, all bound together.” - from the Sun Kil Moon track “Salvador Sanchez”It's not often that boxing appears a central theme in music, but recording artist Mark Kozelek has given the combat sport a starring role in his work since disbanding alternative rock band, Red House Painters, on the eve of the millennium. The frontman for a nearly twelve-year stint (which saw their biggest selling U.S. album “Songs for a Blue Guitar” in 1996, as well as contributions on film soundtracks such as that of Cameron Crowe’s “Vanilla Sky”), Kozelek laid the Red House Painters to rest in 2001 in order to focus on his solo career. Two years later, he and the other founding members of RHP resurrected the band under the moniker Sun Kil Moon, inspired by former South Korean two-division world champion and namesake, Sung-Kil Moon. According to Kozelek, he considered Sun Kil Moon a continuation of the Red House Painters but changed its name to pique the inte...
