Brown, Suns hand Bobcats 13th straight loss

PHOENIX (AP) -- Shannon Brown and the Phoenix Suns made a few adjustments after a slow start. The result: an easy victory.

Brown scored a season-high 26 points and the Suns routed the Bobcats 121-104 Wednesday night, Charlotte's league-worst 13th straight loss.

"If we run our offense, it ain't like I'm doing one-on-one moves and stuff like that," said Brown, who shook off a 2-for-5 start to finish 10 of 16 with five 3-pointers in 34 minutes. "I just want to continue that rhythm and take good shots."

After taking a one-point lead at the end of the first, Phoenix outscored Charlotte 22-6 over the first six-plus minutes of the second quarter to take a 50-33 lead with 5:28 left in the first half.

Sebastian Telfair led the charge, scoring all 11 of his points in the second and leading a defense that held the Bobcats to 3-of-15 shooting in the period.

"One thing we recognized in the first quarter was we were scoring but Charlotte was still getting the same shots," Telf

Goran Dragic added 21 points and Jared Dudley had 20 for the Suns, who have won a season-best four straight.

Phoenix connected on a season-high 17 3-pointers on 28 attempts.

Kemba Walker scored 27 points and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist added 25 to match a career high for the Bobcats, who have not won since November 24.

After taking a one-point lead at the end of the first, Phoenix outscored Charlotte 22-6 over the first six-plus minutes of the second quarter to take a 50-33 lead with 5:28 left in the first half.

Charlotte, coming off a one-point loss Tuesday against the Lakers, cut the lead in half midway through the fourth quarter and pulled to 109-95 on a 3-pointer by Walker with 4:17 remaining.

Chris Berman, Dick Vitale finalists for NSSA Hall of Fame

The National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association is beginning their awards voting on December 1st for the Hall of Fame and National awards of the year, and many familiar names litter the ballot, including long-time ESPN talking heads Chris Berman and Dick Vitale as finalists for the sportscaster Hall of Fame.

Joining Berman and Vitale on the sportscaster Hall of Fame ballot are Ken Squier, Skip Caray, Woody Durham, John Ward, Chris Economaki, Milo Hamilton, Al McCoy, and Dan Kelly. The ESPN duo are the most nationally recognized of all of the finalists among a largely regional list. The sportswriter Hall of Fame ballot contains some more familiar names, and the full ballot is Art Spander, Rick Reilly, Dick Weiss, Hal McCoy, Joe Gilmartin, Sam Lacy, Lesley Visser, Mitch Albom, Wendell Smith, and Thomas Boswell. That's right, fresh off of an awful column trashing stat nerds, Mitch Albom is a Hall of Fame finalist! Rick Reilly is there too after a year where he descen...

Reds need to forget postseason and refocus

By HAL McCOY
FOXSportsOhio.com

CINCINNATI -- What Dusty Baker feared most materialized this weekend -- premature talk of postseason play might distract the job at hand, no matter how menial it seemed.

And it couldn't have seemed more menial with the Houston Astros coming to town, towing 95 losses with them. They hadn't won a series on the road in 2 years -- not since early June of 2010 when they took two of three from the White Sox in Chicago.

So, nothing to worry about, right? Toss the gloves on the field, toss the bats into the batter's box, and they'll do all the work.

That's not the way it worked out, though. The Astros, 40 games behind the Reds in the National League Central and sporting a roster full of minimum-waged rookies, put it to the Reds, taking two of three.

The most surprising was Sunday's game, a 5-1 victory, because they did it against the best the Reds have to offer, 17-game winner Johnny Cueto.

Cueto, though, lasted only four innings and gave up four runs and

A couple hundred onlookers – fans, reporters and Phoenix Suns employees – packed the Hard Rock Café across the street from America West Arena on Thursday afternoon as the NBA presented Suns forward Amaré Stoudemire with the 2002-03 'got milk?' Rookie of the Year Award. The following is a transcript of that press conference.

SUNS BROADCASTER AL McCOY: Good afternoon everybody, happy to have you here. Of course, we’re here for a very wonderful task today to present the 'got milk?' Rookie of the Year Award to the NBA’s top first-year player, our own Amaré Stoudemire.

Tim Kempton on Sir Charles

Posted: March 16, 2004

On Saturday, March 20, Charles Barkley will become the 10th member of the Suns' Ring of Honor when his No. 34 is retired during halftime of the Suns-Bucks game. In honor of the big event, Suns.com is turning the tables on the always-opinionated personality, and asking some of his former teammates, coaches and opponents for their opinions and stories of Sir Charles.

Tim Kempton was role player on the 1992-93 Suns team that won a league-best 62 games and came away with the Western Conference championship. Now Al McCoy’s analyst for KTAR’s Suns broadcasts, Kempton talked with Suns.com about what it was like to be around Barkley that storied year, as well as his thoughts on Sir Charles, the broadcaster.

Suns.com: What are your thoughts about playing with Barkley during the 1992-93 season?

Two days after defeating the Suns at the Staples Center round two will take place at the US Airways Arena.Despite Friday’s much needed Laker win there was a good dose of the good, the bad and the ugly. The good, L.A. had four players score in double-digits including double-doubles by both Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol, 54 points in the paint, 52 rebounds, a triple double by the reserves (34-points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists). The bad, L.A. had nine offensive rebounds, shot 75% from the free throw line and Kobe Bryant logging 35 minutes. The ugly, L.A. was careless with the basketball leading to 19 turnovers, allowing the Suns bench to score 46 points.Nothing has really changed in 48 hours, the Lakers are the better team, the only question is can the Lakers prove it on the road?
The phrase "boxing hotbed" is one of those fight terms that gets thrown about with ease whether the user truly understands its meaning or not -- like "shot," "exposed" and "ring generalship." There aren't many boxing hotbeds around right now, be it for lack of overall interest in the sport, or maybe even times just not being quite as tough as in previous eras. If asked which cities or regions of the United States frequently churn out young talent, the Great Lakes area probably wouldn't make the cut. For instance, Minnesota's finest crop in the last 20 or more years has been Will Grigsby, Jason Litzau and maybe Matt Vanda -- not exactly the Murderers' Row of the fight fame. Such wasn't always the case though. In the early 1900s, states like Wisconsin and Minnesota were not only producing respectable fighters (and a few very, very good ones), they were also included in the battle grounds of boxing legislation in that ...
