International Heavyweight Prizefighter recap: Hamer hammers Kingpin

Last night, Tor Hamer went to bed £32,000 richer (that's $50,000), with a boosted profile and a win over former “World” title challenger, Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson on his resume to boot.
The well spoken, university educated American was certainly the emerging star of this tournament as he eased through his opening bouts, but there were still reservations as to his ability to deal with Johnson, who had fought at a higher level, in the final.
Johnson did have spectacular moments himself, after all. In his Quarterfinal contest with Nourredine Meddoune, he took a look at his novice opponent early on before establishing his jab; avoiding Meddoune’s swatting punches and crashing right hands off the Morrocan’s skull. With Meddoune unable to throw back, Johnson landed a right uppercut through the guard before the referee wisely intervened. If ever an early message has been sent in a Prizefighter tournament, this was it.
Hamer started out confidently against the Brazilian hulk Marcelo Nas...

Tor Hamer wins Prizefighter tourney; defeats Kevin Johnson in final

Penn State graduate and New York heavyweight prospect, Tor Hamer, traveled to England to compete in the Prizefighter international heavyweight tournament, held today at York Hall, in Bethel Green, London. In addition to Hamer, the eight-fighter single-elimination competition consisted of Maurice Harris, Kevin Johnson, Albert Sosnowski, Tom Little, Tom Dallas, Noureddine Meddoune, and Marcelo Luiz Nascimento.
In his quarter-final match against the Brazilian Nascimento, Hamer's superior speed and boxing skills were evident, as he maintained a proper distance finding moments to strike with his power shots, keeping his foe off guard. A knockdown in round three sealed the victory for Tor, as scorecards read 30-27, 30-26, and 29-28, all for the American.
Against England's Dallas, Hamer immediately bull-rushed his adversary with a flurry and trapped him against the ropes. Throwing in combination, Hamer landed a devastating right hook that knocked Dallas out cold, for...

The Week's Boxing Schedule, Featuring Victor Ortiz, Josesito Lopez, Lucas Matthysse And Mike ...

Thank god for Mexicans and Americans of Mexican descent, who are largely carrying professional boxing in the U.S.A,, at least this weekend. They did it last weekend, too, with an impressive win by middleweight Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr., over Andy Lee in El Paso. A look at the trailer for the documentary "China Heavyweight" by Yung Chang above provides an interesting glimpse at what the future of the sport might be like, though. Cuban amateur boxers, trained in a similar hot house atmosphere, have historically found huge success in the professional ranks. It's probably only a matter of time before China becomes a boxing superpower. The London Olympics should be an interesting gauge of where the sport is at in that country. Anyway, back to the Mexican Americans. You've got Josesito Lopez and Victor Ortiz battling it out at the Staples Centre, with Humberto Soto sharing the bill. You've got Mike Dallas, Jr. facing Mexican tough man Javier Castro. Puerto ...

Maurice Harris ready to meet Albert Sosnowski in Prizefighter

Televised live on Sky Sports this Wednesday, June 20, 2012, American heavyweight contender Maurice "Sugar Moe" Harris (25-16-2, 11 KOs) and Poland's, Albert Sosnowski (46-4-2, 28 KOs), will face each other in the Quarter-final bout 1 of the 8-man Betfair Prizefighter International Heavyweights II tournament, taking place at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London.
Harris looks to rebound from a controversial loss he suffered last month when he traveled to Germany, and challenge undefeated power puncher, Edmund Gerber (20-0, 13 KOs). Fully confident in his ability to outbox Sosnowski, Maurice is ready to show the European fans why he deserves to be the favorite in this tournament.
"I've won a major tournament early in my career," said Harris. "I have the boxing skills to outclass each fighter in this event. I'm certain the judges will be fair in this fight as it will be televised for the world to see. My goal is to win this tournament, get back into...

Summer guide to heavyweight action

Nobody will ever make a case for this being a golden age in the heavyweight division. However, that doesn't mean the division is completely devoid of intrigue.

Forty-year-old WBC champ Vitali Klitschko may not fight beyond 2012, and the implications of that title vacancy are having challengers jockey for position.

Meanwhile, WBO/IBF/WBA champ Wladimir Klitschko is still going strong and has, for the most part, cycled through all available challengers. Although the younger Klitschko brother will be relegated to fighting rehab projects for the foreseeable future, there are plenty of interesting fighters in line behind him. Maybe none have a legitimate chance of defeating him, but good bouts could be had among the second-tier big men.

Names like Alexander Povetkin, Robert Helenius, Chris Arreola, Tyson Fury, Kubrat Pulev and at least a half-dozen other names could be matched together for interesting bouts. Further down the line, Seth Mitchell, David Price and Mike Perez could also become interesting figur

Heavyweight contender Maurice "Sugar Moe" Harris (25-16-2, 11 KOs), ranked No. 13 by the IBF, has joined the 8-man Betfair Prizefighter International Heavyweights II line-up set to take place on Wednesday, June 20, at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London, live on Sky Sports.
Harris will compete against fellow contestants Albert Sosnowski (48-4-2, 28 KOs), Marcelo Luiz Nascimento (16-3, 14 KOs), Noureddine Meddoune (5-1, 4 KOs), Tom Dallas (15-2, 11 KOs), Tom Little (3-0), Kevin Johnson (26-1 12 KOs) and Tor Hamer (15-1, 10 KOs).
After a questionable loss against local favorite Edmund Gerber (20-0, 13 KOs) in his native land of Germany last month, Harris, who felt he was robbed, promises to give it his all once again when he travels overseas to fight.

Huck, Dimitrenko, Steiglitz fight Saturday

The Messehalle in Erfurt, Germany plays host Saturday night to an intriguing bill headlined by the WBO cruiserweight rematch between Marco "Captain" Huck and Britain's Ola Afolabi. The chief support features two European heavyweight prospects, Alexander Dimitrenko and Kubrat Pulev, who'll be contesting the vacant EBU title.

Huck (34-2, 25 KOs) is reprising his December 2009 first WBO title defense, when he handily defeated Afolabi over 12 rounds. This time he's making the ninth defense of the strap, just three months after an abortive assault on Alexander Povetkin's WBA heavyweight title (of sorts), when he swapped punches on pretty much even terms with Povetkin but was narrowly out-scored.

Huck, 27, picked up some plaudits for his brave effort against Povetkin, and the fight was a barn-stormer, if woefully lacking in quality. He'll drop 10 pounds in weight to renew hostilities with Afolabi (19-2, 9 KOs), who has gone 6-0 since their last outing, and has looked like a fighter i

Pulev vs. Dimitrenko for European heavyweight title on May 5 Huck-Afolabi undercard

Kubrat Pulev to take on Alexander Dimitrenko for vacant European Heavyweight Title on May 5
A real heavyweight highlight is on the cards for the spectators at the Messehalle Erfurt on May 5. Not only will Marco Huck take on Ola Afolabi to defend his WBO Cruiserweight Title but there is also a bout for the vacant European Championship when heavyweights Kubrat Pulev (15-0, 7 KOs) and Alexander Dimitrenko (32-1, 21 KOs) meet in the ring.
“This is a great chance for me,” said the 30-year-old Pulev, who is currently ranked inside the top 15 by the WBA, IBF and WBO. Since his professional debut back in September 2009, he is unbeaten and of course aiming to keep this record alive. Last October Pulev won the Heavyweight IBF-International Championship against the American Travis Walker in Ludwigsburg. He then defended his title only three months later in Offenburg against the Brit Michael Sprott. But competing for the European title is something very special for the Berlin-base...

After Fabrice Muamba incident, Boxing should be more prepared

Just over two weeks ago Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba suffered a Sudden Cardiac Arrest and collapsed during his team's FA Cup tie with Tottenham Hotspurs, at White Hart Lane. No surprise this tragic incident grabbed the headlines around the world and has continued to do so on a daily basis.
The match was rightly abandoned, as both teams' doctors spent around ten minutes treating the 23 year old on the pitch in front of around 35,000 stunned fans and millions of viewers around the World.
Those watching the drama unfold were left in no doubt that Fabrice was fighting for his life, as one of the doctors was quick to connect up a defibrillator. It is this single action that could well be the reason why Fabrice survived long enough to receive life saving treatment in hospital.

Boxing at its Best… In Video Games?

Being a boxing fan, it can sometimes be hard to get your fill. We are often left disappointed, because boxing fails to deliver on so many occasions. It seems that we boxing fans merely hold out for the handful of credible matches that happen each year… and sigh at the ones we miss.
Sergio Martinez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather are two of the potential big matches that we're missing out on right now, but what about historical boxing fantasy fights like Vitali Klitschko vs. George Foreman or Muhammad Ali vs. Rocky Maricano?
Well it will only be fans of EA Sports’ Knockout Kings / Fight Night boxing video games that would have experienced entertaining match-ups like these. Now all you older fans, before you decide you don’t want to read on because I’m talking “video games”, remember that boxing needs all the following it can get, and these games have been very successful.

2011 Boxing Knockout Of The Year Nominees

Welcome to The Queensberry Rules' annual year-end awards, starting today and continuing throughout the week. Here's how we do it around these parts: The major categories are Knockout of the Year, Round of the Year, Fight of the Year and Fighter of the Year. The final leg is a pu-pu platter of awards ranging from Trainer of the Year to more frivolous topics. For each category, I give five finalists, with video and/or relevant info. You tell me if my finalists and honorable mentions are lacking, and give your vote on who you think should win. Maybe you sway me to adjust the list, and maybe you sway me on the eventual winner. On the second day after a category is introduced, I give that winner and explain why.
