Of Squared Rings And Silver Screens

When I arrived at Cinemark 20 in Moosic, Pa., for May Day: Mayweather vs. Guerrero, I had no idea what to expect. Of course, I fully expected Floyd Mayweather to dominate his welterweight opponent, Robert Guerrero. And I was looking forward to watching a fight on something bigger than my 36” TV screen. I didn't know what the fight atmosphere would be like sitting in a darkened movie theater, though. Who attends these screenings? How do fans react to what they see on the screen and to the people around them? How does it compare to seeing a fight in person? Beyond the bigger screen, is a movie theater seat any better (or worse) than my couch for watching a boxing event?

I picked the best seat in the house: The middle seat in the last row. Although I arrived early, I began to wonder if my husband and I were awaiting a private screening. Slowly, other boxing fans finally began filing into the small theater. Many early arrivals came alone, others in pairs. People cited the $18...

Mares stops Ponce De Leon in 9th round

Abner Mares moved up in weight and didn't miss a beat, stopping Daniel Ponce De Leon in the ninth round Saturday night to win a piece of the featherweight title.

Mares landed a right hand counter to drop Ponce De Leon, then swarmed all over him before referee Jay Nady moved in to stop the fight at 2:20 of the round. Mares, a former batamweight and super batamweight champion, remained unbeaten with the win.

The fight was on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather-Robert Guerrero fight at the MGM Grand hotel.

Mares began controlling the fight in the second round, landing a left hook followed by a right that put Ponce De Leon up for the first time. Mares won most of the early rounds, but a low blow by Ponce De Leon in the seventh round seemed to give Ponce De Leon new energy.

The two fighters are stablemates, who fight under the same management but agreed to fight each other anyway.

''I wasn't just fighting some opponent,'' Mares said. ''He's my friend. The second time I dr

J'Leon Love (15-0; 8 KOs) vs. Gabriel Rosado (21-6; 13 KOs)

Round 1:

Caution from both to start as neither fighter is throwing anything complex. Lots of jabs and feeling out here, nothing major landing. Both guys are planning for the long term. Love outlanded Rosado in effective shots.

Score: Love 10-9

Round 2:

Love is the aggressor this round, coming out with a bit more aggression this round. He's trying to get in close and Rosado does a good job keeping him away with movement. Love is on his heels but Rosado can't find a good range to throw; Love is landing some nice shots whenever Rosado gets him where he wants to against the ropes. Rosado lands some big rights at the end of the round as he gets in close. Might've stolen that round when all is said and done. I'll go...

Score: Love 10-9, 20-18 Love

Round 3:

Love opens the round using his jab and almost daring Rosado to rabbit punch him; Love goes to the clinch and Rosado lands some nice body shots. Love is moving backwards

TQBR Roundtable, Ruben Edition: Floyd Mayweather Vs. Robert Guerrero

So continues our marathon coverage of one of the biggest fights of 2013, Floyd Mayweather vs. Robert Guerrero on Showtime pay-per-view May 4. Previously: putting Mayweather-Guerrero in context; the undercard, previewed; keys to the fight; a full preview of the main event. Next: the Ultimate Guide.

This installment of TQBR’s regular TQBR roundtable is dedicated to Rubens everywhere -- both Ruben Guerrero, the father of Robert Guerrero, and delicious Reuben sandwiches. We’re not really sure if we like his son’s chances against pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather, Jr. but you have to admire a guy who, when everyone else wants to kiss Mayweather’s ass, instead calls him out as a convicted wife beater. Again, not sure about the hat/shades combo, but there’s a ring to “we’re going to beat that woman beater, baby, and see how he’s going to like it.” Also Reuben sandwiches are really tasty and I’m going to get one/several when I’m in New York in June. Anyway, on to the roundtable...

May Day undercard workout & presser photos: Mares, De Leon, Santa Cruz, Rosado, Love

Today, the May Day undercard fighters took center stage in Las Vegas, as they held their public workouts, as well as their final pre-fight press conference. Right here, we have a huge photo gallery from the events, along with more details. Take a look as Abner Mares, Daniel Ponce de Leon, Leo Santa Cruz and his opponent Alexander Munoz, and Gabriel Rosado and J'Leon Love all took their turns first in the ring, and then in front of the podium.

It's a pretty solid undercard, especially with the fantastic co-feature of Ponce de Leon vs. Abner Mares. With Rosado vs. Love, that's an intriguing fight at 154 lbs, and these two guys aren't shy about sharing their opinions of the other, and they won't be shy in the ring throwing leather either. And then Leo Santa Cruz is always just a fun fighter to watch.
On Friday afternoon, it's weigh-in time for all of the fighters, including Floyd Mayweather and Robert Guerrero. Be sure to check back with us then f...

Floyd Mayweather vs. Robert Guerrero may be getting all of the attention, but there's more action in store on Saturday night. Once again we find ourselves less than a week out from a big pay-per-view boxing match. Some things have changed – Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is fighting on Showtime instead of HBO. But, as they say, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Robert Guerrero is new, but it’s hard not to feel like we’ve been here before. Nobody seriously doubts Mayweather’s chances. It’s déjà vu all over again. At least the undercard should be entertaining. Perhaps as entertaining as that picture. And yes, Rocky vs. Clubber Lang totally deserved to be on PPV.
