Acquinity Sports basking in recent success of Argenis Mendez & Umberto Savigne

The first-quarter of 2013 closed with Acquinity Sports pitching a perfect game, as its fighters won all four fights they participated in, highlighted by International Boxing Federation (IBF) super featherweight titlist Argenis "The Thunderstorm" Mendez (21-2, 11 KOs) becoming the second-year promotional company's first world champion.
Mendez, a 2004 Dominican Republic Olympian now living in Miami, dropped defending champion Juan Carlos Salgado in the opening round of their March 9 title fight Costa Mesa, California on HBO Latino, finishing him off in the fourth. Mendez is No. 3 in The Ring Magazine ratings.
Acquinity sports had Juan Manual Lopez or Yuriorkis Gamboa in its sites as Mendez' next opponent.
Last weekend on ESPN Friday Night Fights, Cuban light heavyweight Umberto "The Don" Savigne (11-1, 8 KOs) added the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Latino title to his growing display case, pounding previously undefeated Brazilian slugger Jackson Junior (1...

Weekend Afterthoughts On The Scope Of Bernard Hopkins' Achievement, Some Killer KOs And More

If spoil sports aren't your flavor, perhaps a pair of refreshing counter left hook knockouts from the past weekend can cleanse the palate? Edgar Sosa did in Ulises Solis with one in a meaningful flyweight bout, finally scoring a victory over his thrice-rival. Junior lightweight Argenis Mendez, too, got his revenge in a rematch against Juan Carlos Salgado. It was the snazzier of the two counter left blows. It's not available in a way I can share right now, but keep looking for it on YouTube et al in the coming days if you haven't seen it.

Via an alphabet belt mandatory shot, Sosa has a rich opportunity to take out the weakest of all the lineal champions, Toshiyuki Igarashi, or else strengthen him as worthy of the designation. Mendez faces a wasteland of potential challengers for his alphabet belt -- the next guy in line, Rances Barthelemy, didn't even deserve (by popular consensus) to win his eliminator against Arash Usmanee.

But what, you ask, of Bernard Hopk...

Argenis Mendez ready for second chance at Juan Carlos Salgado this Saturday

Top contender Argenis "The Thunderstorm" Mendez (20-2, 10 KOs) gets another shot at IBF titleholder Juan Carlos Salgado (26-1-1, 16 KOs) on Saturday night, March 9, in the 12-round main event, live on HBO Latino from The Hanger in Costa Mesa, California.
Mendez recently returned from an eight-week training camp with his trainer, Lee Beard, in England.
"I've been working hard to get ready for this fight," Mendez said. "I'm excited to be fighting once again for the world title and on HBO Latino. I'm going to take care of unfinished business. I'm not going to leave the final result in the hands of the judges this time. I'm coming back with the belt for my family and team, Acquniity Sports, and my country, Dominican Republic."

Salgado and Mendez are rated No. 4 and No. 7, respectively, in the ProBoxing-Fans.com Super Featherweight division rankings.

The Heavyweight elimination bout scheduled for March 9 between Chris Arreola and Bermane Stiverne has been postponed. The match up will be rescheduled to a later date due to a bronchial infection sustained by Chris Arreola.
The co-featured bout scheduled for that same night, as well as the remaining undercard bouts, will continue as scheduled with the much anticipated IBF junior lightweight championship rematch between Mexico's World Champion Juan Carlos Salgado (26-1-1, 16 KOs) taking on the #1 world contender and mandatory challenger Argenis Mendez (20-2, 10 KOs) of the Dominican Republic stepping into the spotlight.
The co-semi-main bouts, will feature twin brothers, Javier and Oscar Molina.

Video preview: Fight Game with Jim Lampley new episode on March 9

The next episode of The Fight Game with Jim Lampley premieres on March 9th on HBO. Right here, you can check out a video preview of the show. Give it a watch below.

Alright, will it's a promo for the next episode of The Fight Game with Jim Lampley, but really this just seems like the same clips they've been using, with Lampley making a few comments about boxing overall, and a few blurbs from the likes of Max Kellerman or Roy Jones thrown in. So nothing new here necessarily, but the episode itself will be new next month, on Saturday, March 9th.
The episode will debut after HBO's doubleheader that night, featuring Juan Carlos Salgado vs. Argenis Mendez for the IBF Super Featherweight Title in the co-feature, and Chris Arreola vs. Bermane Stiverne in a WBC eliminator in the main event.

Opening quotes for Arreola vs. Stiverne & Salgado vs. Mendez II on HBO

On Saturday, March 9, Riverside's Chris "The Nightmare" Arreola (35-2, 30 KOs) takes on the heavy-hitting Haitian Bermane "B. Ware" Stiverne (22-1-1, 20 KOs) in a heavyweight battle with the winner guaranteed to fight for the WBC Heavyweight World Championship in his next bout. Both Arreola and Stiverne will look to put their power on display to take that next step toward history.
"Boxing fans can look forward to an exciting night of action on HBO® with the heavyweight showdown between Cristobal Arreola and Bermane Stiverne," said Kery Davis, Senior Vice President of Programming, HBO® Sports.

The Arreola-Stiverne fight shapes up as a bout unlikely to go the distance given the knockout rates of both combatants. Arreola, 31, has stopped all but five of his 35 victims, while the 34-year old Stiverne - whose only loss on his impressive record came more than five years and 11 fights ago - has allowed only two of his 22 conquests to hear the final bell...

The Week's Boxing Schedule, Featuring Adrien Broner, Argenis Mendez And Juan Carlos Burgos

From one of my favourite Youtube sub genres, crazy Russian driving videos, comes this beauty. That guy must thank his lucky stars every day. Junior lightweight Vicente Escobedo might identify, with the Adrien Broner express heading straight for him this weekend on HBO. Not that I'd count Escobedo out after all the upsets in recent weeks. Apart from Broner vs. Escobedo, it's a big week for the junior lightweight division with top contenders Argenis Mendez and Juan Carlos Burgos in action in separate bouts. There's a Shobox card featuring lightweights Miguel Acosta and Art Hovhannisyan and various other televised offerings, mainly in Spanish.

Adrien Broner vs. Vicente Escobedo, Saturday, HBO, Cincinnati. Adrien Broner is a fighter with a serious push behind him. This will be the Cincinnati junior lightweight's fifth consecutive fight on HBO. Sure, it helps that he's “advised” by big time behind the scenes man Al Haymon, but the attention is ...

DiBella Entertainment has announced a solid undercard supporting the Sergio Martinez vs. Matthew Macklin card, entitled "THE REAL Middleweight Championship - Get Your Irish Up", on March 17 (St. Patrick's Day), in The Theater at Madison Square Garden.
A battle of unbeaten heavyweights, Magomed "Mago" Abdusalamov (13-0, 13 KOs) and Jason Pettaway (11-0, 8 KOs), will provide chief support on the undercard in a 10/12 round fight for the vacant World Boxing Council ("WBC") Silver Championship. The Russian-born Abdusalamov, who now lives and trains out of Oxnard, California, where Martinez is based, sports a perfect 13-fight pro record with 13 wins by knockout and is already rated No. 15 by the World Boxing Association ("WBA").

Argenis Mendez Back in Action Tonight in the DR

DiBella Entertainment's IBF #6 rated Super Featherweight, Argenis Mendez (18-2, 9KO's), returns to action tonight in his native country of the Dominican Republic. It will be Mendez' first fight since his highly controversial decision loss to Juan Carlos Salgado for the IBF Super Featherweight Championship. The fight, which took place back on September 10 of this year, was held in Salgado's home country of Mexico, in Zapopan, Jalisco. The world championship bout will be aired on Sunday, November 27, at 7PM ET, on SNY, as part of DiBella Entertainment's "Broadway Boxing" series.
Mendez, given the controversy from the first fight, had hoped to immediately secure a rematch against Salgado. Rather than wait around for the fight to possibly materialize, Mendez will look to take things into his own hands and work his way back toward another title shot, beginning with his bout tonight against Jose Palma (14-4-2, 9KO's).

The Week's Boxing Schedule, Featuring Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. ...

Of all the weeks leading up to New Year, this week has the weakest boxing schedule. So if you're planning that winter vacation or have something you've been meaning to do on a Friday or Saturday night, do it now, for God's sake! Because after this, there's really no break. If you go out, you will miss quality boxing and we will shame you in the comments section. Not really. We're very understanding like that. Not that it's a terrible week. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is fighting on HBO, but in a fight that not everyone believes should be on HBO. Wasted talent Joan Guzman is on ESPN Deportes on Friday night, along with underrated junior lightweight Argenis Mendez. There are also a few other cards, the first episode of 24/7 Cotto/Margarito and the replay of Saturday's contentious pay-per-view. Feast your eyes on the delicious awkwardness and confrontation of Margarito and Cotto's “Face Off” and let's get to the fights.
