Audley Harrison a disappointing “step up” for Deontay Wilder

For at least the last year and a half, fight fans have wondered when American heavyweight Deontay Wilder was going to take a step up. Wilder was the only medal winner from America's blighted Beijing team, capturing a bronze, and has racked up a 27-0 record since turning pro. None of those opponents has survived to see the final bell, yet none of them was better than a journeyman, and most were mere tomato cans.
In taking on Audley Harrison, Wilder is fighting a "name" opponent at last. Ostensibly, Harrison is serving as Wilder's gatekeeper, the guy who isn't quite a world class opponent himself, but is good enough to keep misfits from rising into the world rankings. The problem is that Harrison has big name recognition, at least in the UK, but isn't much of a gatekeeper.

A gold medal winner at the Sydney Olympics, Audley Harrison was thought of as the successor to Lennox Lewis for a time, but his career was derailed by back-t...

This mash-up of ‘Mad Men’ and March Madness is absolutely fantastic (video)

With the heavily anticipated sixth season of the brilliant AMC series Mad Men set to premiere on April 7 and March Madness already beginning to ramp up and Selection Sunday just around the corner, the fact that Official Comedy had the good sense to pair these two juggernauts up into an expertly crafted mash-up is utterly genius. Watch as dialogue from Don, Roger, Peggy, Pete, Joan, Betty (unfortunately not “Fat Betty” though) and many other characters is cut up to make it appear like the gang is talking about the NCAA Tournament. March Mad Men Madness, indeed. Via YouTube (by way of With Leather): March Madness meets Mad Men. Don Draper, Roger Sterling, Ken Cosgrove, Peggy Olson, Pete Campbell, Betty Francis, and Bert Cooper have a lot at stake, and things are getting stressful. Who will win this year’s pool at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce? Awesome. I heard Official Comedy considered doing something along these lines with another AMC series, The Walking Dead, but all the grunting ...

Top 5 boxers over the age of 40 in history

The Top 5 "Over 40" Fighters of All-Time
Bernard Hopkins’ technical schooling of Tavoris Cloud, a reigning titleholder who was more than 17 years his junior, was significant. I was among those who figured Cloud, with Father Time in his corner vs. B-Hop, would be too much for the ageless “Executioner”. However, it appears Father Time apparently has as much trouble getting to Hopkins as Cloud did.
At the age of 48, he has once again set a new standard in boxing as the oldest champion ever, another impressive performance that will go down in the annals of boxing history. But does this latest historic win by Hopkins make him the greatest ‘Over 40’ boxer of all-time?
Here are my top 5 boxers over the age of 40 in history.
5. Roberto Duran (Over 40 record: 18-7-0 w/ 9ko’s)
Duran was mainly a bloated version of his iconic self after he turned 40. He fell short when facing upper-echelon fighters of the time. He dropped two fights to Vinnie Pazienza and Hector Camacho and oneto...

Look back at top boxing champions from Brooklyn as rich history in borough is restored

When world championship boxing returns to Brooklyn, New York for the first time since 1931 at the brand new Barclays Center on Saturday, October 20, it will do so with one of its own. Reigning WBA World Welterweight Champion Paulie "Magic Man" Malignaggi, fresh off of a masterful championship capturing upset of undefeated Ukrainian Vyacheslav Senchenko in Senchenko's hometown of Donetsk, will attempt to defend his title for the first time in his home borough against rugged Mexican Pablo Cesar Cano.Malignaggi, sure to be the hometown favorite, is part of a long legacy in the squared circle. Brooklyn has been the birthplace of some of the biggest and most storied names in the history of boxing. As Malignaggi prepares for Cano, a reflection on the shadows hovering over his homecoming reminds us just how much glory there is in the Brooklyn boxing tradition. No shadow extends farther than that of Brooklyn's most famous fistic son.Kid Dynamite . . .
Sherman Tank Williams back in action June 28 in Macau against Chauncy Welliver

Heavyweight road warrior Sherman "Tank" Williams, a Bahamian sports legend, will travel halfway around the world to challenge WBO Asia Pacific and WBC Asian Boxing Council Champion Chauncy "Hillyard Hammer" Welliver on June 28 in Macau, China.
Williams (34-11-2, 19 KOs) hasn't fought in 1 ½ years, since he was involved in a highly-controversial "no contest" with Evander Holyfield for the World Boxing Federation title, at The Greenbrier in White Sulpher Springs, West Virginia.
"I'm looking for a break," Williams said about his fight with Welliver (53-5-5, 20 KOs). "I'm not discouraged. I'll be coming to fight like I always do. I've been sitting on the bench, training in the gym, and I couldn't wait to fight. This is an important fight for me. I don't know too much about Welliver other than he's had a lot of fights. The only two guys he's fought I'm familiar with are David Bostice and Bert Co...

Mad Men of college football

Miles Beamer Meyer Saban
Imagine being in a room with this group.
In honor of the return of Mad Men, tonight on AMC, I asked Twitter for their suggestions of college football’s Mad Men. The Photoshop above was what resulted.
Don Draper: Urban Meyer, Ohio State
Like Don Draper, Urban Meyer is a smooth talker. When a pitch needs to be sold, Meyer will know how to deliver. Like Draper, Meyer has battled his own issues away from the job that distracted him from time to time from committing full-time to his work.
Roger Sterling: Les Miles, LSU
Roger Sterling is a little more over the top than Don Draper and has a little bit more of a wild side to him it would seem. He is every bit as good as Draper when it comes to getting the job done but head to head it still seems as though Don gets the last laugh. Comparing Miles to Urban Meyer might result in a similar story.
Pete Campbell: Lane Kiffin, USC
Pete is good at his job and he knows it. He is also not afraid to challenge his superiors and...

Riddick Bowe making boxing comeback, doing documentary on ‘Fan Man’

Riddick Bowe is 43 years old and hasn’t fought since 2008, but the former world champion is planning a comeback for the second time in his career. Citing the weakness in the heavyweight division, Bowe says he wants one tuneup fight before he takes on one of the Klitschko brothers (Vitali and Wladimir), who combine to hold all five world heavyweight titles.
“I’m coming out of retirement and I’m going to shock the world,” Bowe told Larry Brown Sports.
He has his eye on Bert Cooper, a 46-year-old heavyweight who is 38-23, and whom Bowe beat in 1990. After that, he wants his shot at one of the Klitschkos, whom he calls by another name that is formed when you substitute the KL for a B.
Bowe isn’t in complete fighting shape yet, but he doesn’t think it will take him long to get there. He’s been working with a trainer the past six months and says he’s in good shape.
“Give me two or three months, and I’ll be ready,” he says.
Would he be willing to fight Evander Holyfield, who’s still boxi
