Brian Viloria Upset By Juan Francisco Estrada, Zou Shiming Wins Pro Debut On Historic China Show

(Zou Shiming; photo credit: Chris Farina, Top Rank)

What might have been the biggest viewing audience for a live boxing match in human history got itself a good show Saturday, then it watched a win for its national hero.

From the standpoint of action in the ring, the most significant outcome on the Macau, China card that aired Saturday on HBO2 was flyweight Brian Viloria dropping a decision to hungry young Juan Francisco Estrada. It was a fan-friendly slugfest with an upset winner, given how Viloria has climbed into consensus pound-for-pound top-10 status in the past couple years.

The "event" was significant in a whole other way: As with most pro debuts, Chinese Olympian gold medalist Zou Shiming's pro debut had only ceremonial importance and was non-competitive. But that event was pure Top Rank genius. For years, Top Rank's Bob Arum has talked of bringing a card to Macau so frequently that it became a running joke, not because the idea was unsound but ...

Viloria beat Marquez, unifies flyweight titles

Brian Viloria stopped Mexico's Hernan Marquez in the 10th round to add the WBA flyweight world title to his WBO belt Saturday at Sports Arena.

Viloria (32-3, 19 KO) was dominant throughout sending Marquez to the canvas twice, before a left hook in the tenth floored Marquez again and drew the towel from the Mexican's corner with the referee stopping the bout at 1:01 of the round.

Viloria got the better of the bout early, flooring Marquez with a thunderous right late in the first. In the fifth, Marquez (34-3 25 KO) scored some strong hits, but the former Olympian weathered the storm before again sending Marquez to the canvas.

On the undercard, Nicaragua's Roman Gonzalez retained his WBA light flyweight title with a unanimous decision over Juan Francisco Estrada.

Brian Viloria Vs. Hernan Marquez Almost 50 Years In The Making

Exactly how greatness is quantified in boxing today is at times difficult to define. Absent a system where the best are forced to fight the best, and often, we often find ourselves gawking at athleticism in place of actual boxing skills, and mistaking strategic matchmaking for more significant accomplishments.

On paper, lists of quintuple and sextuple champions would seem to put fighters like "Homicide Hank" Armstrong to weeping shame. And it's not like Tommy Hearns, Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao are or were bad fighters, or that they didn't accomplish amazing things in boxing, but simply that the structure of the sport today makes the distinction far more likely than in the more ancient, medieval times of the sport. Fighters just aren't generally able to stumble across true, undisputed and inarguable titles these days, much less defend said title four times in the matter of a couple of weeks, or rematch great fighters a month after the vicious 15 rou...

Viloria defeats Romero via 9th round TKO

Viloria vs. Romero III Results
Brian Viloria finally got the edge over Omar Nino Romero, defeating him via 9th round TKO to retain his WBO flyweight title. Romero's corner halted the action in the 9th stanza as Viloria pummeled him along the ropes. With the win, Viloria was able to erase their previous two encounters, in which Romero first defeated him via Unanimous Decision in 2006 at junior flyweight, and then a rematch between the two men ended in Majority Draw before being ruled a no contest after Romero failed a drug test.
Viloria's win also continues his career resurgence. Written off by many people, he's now the de facto number 1 guy in the world at flyweight.By moving past his old rival, he can now focus on bigger fights in the near future. His confidence must now be at all-time high after a huge upset win against Giovani Segura, and this victory against Romero.
Viloria now improves to 31 (18) - 3, while Romero falls to 31 (13) - 5 - 2.
In earlier action, Rodel...

The Week’s Boxing Schedule Featuring Brian Viloria, Omar Nino, Vicente Escobedo And Yhudel Johnson

Wow, there’s not much going on this Doce de Mayo weekend. Maybe that’s because Doce de Mayo isn’t actually a Mexican holiday, it just means 12th of May in Spanish. What has this got to do with the video above? Or the boxing schedule for that matter? Very little, though that violent video is rather mesmerising. Like I said, there ain’t much on. This biggest fight of the weekend is probably the third fight between Brian Viloria and Omar Nino.

Brian Viloria vs. Omar Nino, Saturday, Integrated Sports Pay-Per-View, Pasig City Phillipines. Coming off his first flyweight title defence against Giovani Segura, Viloria finally gets a rematch of two 2006 fights with Mexico’s Omar Nino, which ended in a points defeat and a controversial no contest. Both fights were very fun, with the two then-junior flyweights alternating between boxing and brawling. Viloria (30-3) is powerful but not without technique, nor the ability to throw punches in bunches. He’s carried his pop up a divi...

In a pair of 2006 junior flyweight title bouts, Romero beat Viloria by decision, and then the two fought to a draw that was later ruled a No-Decision after Romero failed a drug test. You have to take your hat off to Viloria, 30-3 (17 KOs), for resurrecting his career after it appeared to be over. After an up-and-down run, he was stopped by the unheralded Carlos Tamara. After a scary post-fight scene, where Viloria was hospitalized, it appeared to be a “wrap.”

Segura remains hospitalized after fight

Former junior flyweight champion Giovani Segura will remain hospitalized and under observation in a Manila hospital following his TKO 8 loss to WBO flyweight champion Brian Viloria on Saturday night.

Initial reports indicated a broken orbital as the cause of the grotesque swelling on the upper right side of Segura's head. However, Filipino fight manager, Aljoe Jaro, who had visited Segura in the hospital on Sunday said that the "Aztec Warrior" had not suffered any sort of fracture, nor, as also rumored, a blood clot.

"Segura only suffered an ugly swelling next to his right eye, but he doesn't have any sort of internal injury or fracture," Jaro told ESTO Online Magazine.

Shortly after the statement from Jaro, Segura issued his own words to the public.

"I'm fine," Segura told his fans via Facebook. "The doctor told me that all I needed was a good rest. I just need for the swelling to go down.

"This was just a bad night and I'll be champion again. A Me

Viloria stops Segura, defends WBO title

WBO flyweight champ Brian Viloria (30-3, 17 KOs) beat former junior flyweight champ Giovani Segura (28-2-1, 24 KOs) by TKO in the eighth round due to a grotesque, Hasim Rahman/Pawel Wolak-like swelling on the upper right side of Segura's head Saturday in the Philippines.

Viloria vs. Segura headlines card

In what promises to be an instant classic, WBO flyweight champ Brian Viloria (29-3, 16 KOs) looks to make the first defense of his title against the hard-charging former undisputed junior flyweight champ Giovani Segura (28-1-1, 24 KOs) at Ynares Sports Arena, Pasig City, Metro Manila, Philippines this Saturday.

Viloria, who is a dual citizen of the United States and the Philippines, is a two-time junior flyweight world champion who moved up to take the flyweight title from Mexico's Julio Cesar Miranda last July. In his 10 years as a pro, the former US Olympian has been in the ring with the likes of Ulises Solis, Edgar Sosa, Carlos Tamara, Omar Niño Romero, and Gilberto Keb Baas. Viloria is ranked seventh in the flyweight division in The Boxing Tribune's unbiased world rankings.

Known as "The Aztec Warrior," Giovani Segura is making his first run at a title in the flyweight division and is best known for his two stoppage wins over future Hall of Famer Ivan Calderon. The former WBA and WBO
