Chilemba: I feel I’ve already beaten Bellew, this time I’ll do whatever is necessary

On March 30, top-rated light heavyweight contender Isaac "Golden Boy" Chilemba (20-1-2, 9KO's) and reigning WBC silver light heavyweight champion Tony Bellew (19-1-1, 12KO's) battled to a 12-round split decision draw in Bellew's backyard of Liverpool. Now, the two combatants are set to go at it again this Saturday night, on the undercard of the much anticipated rematch between defending IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler at the beautiful O2 Arena in London. The bout, promoted by Matchroom Sport, in association with DiBella Entertainment, is scheduled for 12 rounds and will once again be for Bellew's WBC Silver light heavyweight title.

"I am sharper, stronger and definitely healthier this time around," said WBC #3, IBF #9, and WBO #9-rated Chilemba. "I will adjust and do whatever is necessary to beat him and bring the victory home. The changes that I made this time were mostly to do with m...

Cohen congratulates Jean & Thompson for big Shobox wins

Promoter Greg Cohen wishes to congratulate all four of his fighters who scored impressive victories on Friday, May 10, in Miami, Oklahoma.
Fighting in the night's main event and live on ShoBox: The New Generation Canada's Dierry "Dougy Style" Jean (25-0, 17 KOs) won his 12-round IBF elimination bout with a spectacular, one-punch TKO 4 (2:01) over Cleotis "Mookie" Pendarvis (17-4-2, 6 KOs).

Jean took a few rounds to study the tricky southpaw Pendarvis before unloading his paralyzing right hand. Pendarvis rose bravely, but a follow-up barrage rightfully brought the stoppage. Jean is now the mandatory challenger for the IBF Super Lightweight Championship.
"Dierry made the most of his USA premium cable debut. He not only won his fight but did so in a way that establishes him as a top contender and will create added anticipation when he does challenge for a world title," said Cohen. "He laid out a good fighter wit...

Bellew and Chilemba came face-to-face for the first time at today’s press conference at the Hilton Hotel in Liverpool ahead of the crunch clash on Saturday, and the hometown star rejected the thoughts of Chilemba’s trainer Buddy McGirt, who predicted Bellew would struggle to cope with the pressure of performing in front of a huge Merseyside crowd.

Ring activity: A growing problem in boxing

It’s important to be able to regularly see the stars of a sport in order to get into it. And looking at the activity levels of most of today’s stars, one has to wonder if it is contributing to the stagnancy of the sport. When a boxer is barely fighting, people’s minds wander. It’s hard to build on momentum or set up bigger fights in dramatic fashion when the activity levels are so low.
It’s like a body of water. Not too long ago, boxers stayed active. The water was moving. It was crisp and alive. Now it’s like a swamp. And the stench is becoming increasingly hard to take. I remember 20 years ago, the old-timers would complain about how how boxers didn’t fight enough, comparing them to the fighters of old. Let’s do the same thing, but only 20 years back--to 1992.
The best fighters in boxing in 1992 were (in no strict order) Julio Cesar Chavez, Pernell Whitaker, Terry Norris, Orlando Canizales, James Toney, and Buddy McGirt. Let’s look at their activity levels around this time.

They're All Winners At The Golden Gloves Finals

(Photos by Robert Doyle)I got to cover the 2012 Golden Gloves finals with someone who is part of the history of the Gloves, which, by the way, is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year. So I'm at what used to be called the Felt Forum with one Dennis Doyle, who was a finalist in the Golden Gloves in 1977 and in 1980 took the silver at the Empire State Games (Buddy McGirt was his teammate), destroyed everyone and wasn't allowed to fight in the final fight because of a perforated eardrum. He tells me, when we're in the Blarney Rock on 33rd before the fight, that in his first Golden Gloves fight (back then they didn't wear headgear and all the fights were at the Garden) he knocked out his challenger, a butcher, in the 2nd round with an overhand right. Knocked him out cold.
Sergio Martinez Retains Middleweight Title with Dramatic TKO

Boxing fans were treated to the best and worst of Sergio Martinez on March 17 when the WBC Diamond Middleweight Champion defended his crown against Matthew Macklin of Ireland at Madison Square Garden in New York.Macklin owned the first half of the fight and dropped the Argentinean champion in the seventh round with a stiff right hand. However, Martinez then shifted into high gear after realizing he was in danger of losing his title. He started to use some good footwork and there was a lot more purpose behind his punches after he picked himself up from the deck. He finally caught up with Macklin in the 11th round and dropped him to the mat with a sharp combination.Macklin managed to get to his feet, but not for long as Martinez sent him crashing back to the canvas with another perfectly-aimed left hand. Macklin managed to get to his feet and beat the count just as the bell rang to end the round. However, his trainer Buddy McGirt felt the bloodied and bruised fighter was in no condition to continue and threw in

Matthew Macklin workout photos & quotes: Martinez can’t cope with my intensity & desire

Earlier today, Matthew Macklin participated in an open workout before a packed house of media at the Trinity Boxing Club in New York City. Macklin is being trained by world-class trainer Buddy McGirt for his upcoming middleweight championship bout live on HBO's "World Championship Boxing" against Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez on St. Patrick's Day, Saturday, March 17, at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. With a little over two weeks to go until the fight, Macklin looked to already be in phenomenal shape.
On hand to show their support for Macklin were Irish Hurling stars Eion Kelly (right of Macklin in the Photo) and Lar Corbett (left of Macklin in the photo), who had made the trip over from Ireland earlier this week and have been touring the city with Macklin to rally together the heavy Irish community throughout the New York area to come out and support Macklin on March 17. Below are photos and quotes from the media day.
