Bailey’s huge KO over Jones & more weekend notes past the raging Pacquiao-Bradley controversy

Unfortunately for boxing the past weekend's headlines were dominated by the negativity surrounding the Pacquiao-Bradley decision. However, despite that black eye for the sport there was another fight which showed fans why we keep watching the sport we love.
In baseball, if a team is down 12-1 in the ninth inning fans know a comeback is not going to happen. But in boxing if a fighter is hopelessly down in a fight there is always hope - especially when you go by the name of the "KO King" - and that was never more in evidence than it was for the Randall Bailey-Mike Jones vacant IBF welterweight title fight on the Pacquiao-Bradley undercard.

Credit: Sumio Yamada

The aging former champ Bailey rallied from behind to score a dramatic knockout of the undefeated Jones. The story itself is amazing, as Bailey’s career looked to be coming to an end and then in a flash that all changed. In my opinion it is fights and moments like this which make the sport of boxing so great...

Kelly Pavlik Smacks Around Scott Sigmon, Mike Lee And Jesse Magdaleno Pick Up Wins

This week's edition of Friday Night Fights, televised from the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, served as a platform for Kelly Pavlik to peddle his comebacking wares against Scott Sigmon more than anything else. There was an appearance from that Subway guy, though.
No, not Jared. And not Michael Strahan either.
On the undercard, Notre Dame alumus and amateur standout Mike Lee walked away with another win on his ledger in decisioning Eliseo Durazo, and Jesse Magdaleno got to hit the slots early following a 1st round TKO of Carlos Valcarcel.
It was actually fun for a showcase type of card though, even if ESPN got away from what made their last few broadcasts before this one entertaining, which is solid matchmaking.
Kelly Pavlik in the main event was sure to turn a few heads -- even against an almost completely unknown foe that he basically had his way with. But the anonymous guy made a bit of a name for himself, as Scott Sigmon's corner saved him from himself betwe...

Kelly Pavlik headlines FNF this week; video previews & event overview

Reports from Pacquiao-Bradley Weigh-in and International Boxing Hall of Fame
Former Middleweight world champion Kelly “The Ghost” Pavlik (38-2, 33 KOs) and Scott “Cujo” Sigmon (22-3, 12 KOs) will meet in the 10-round Super Middleweight main event June 8 on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights presented by Corona Extra. Friday’s show will air at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN2 HD, ESPN Deportes, and ESPN3 from Las Vegas. The card is presented by Top Rank Promotions.
Main Event:
Pavlik enters Friday’s fight having fought current and former titlists Sergio Martinez and Bernard Hopkins and is coming off a March second-round TKO win over Aaron Jaco. After the fight ESPN.com boxing expert Dan Rafael wrote, “The comeback is under way for Pavlik, and so far, so good for the former middleweight world champion, who looked sharp. He looked in tremendous shape and was powerful with his left hand while not even needing to employ the destructive right hand that has been his calling card. Jaco never stood a...

Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley Undercard, Previewed (And The Rest Of The Week’s Boxing ...

So continues our marathon coverage of one of the biggest fights of 2012, Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley on June 9 on HBO pay-per-view. Previously: the stakes of Pacquiao-Bradley; getting to know Bradley. Next: keys to the fight.(Timothy Bradley)That man is on a vegan diet. I know it’s breaking the tradition of having completely random media on top of the schedule, but I can’t get past that craziness. This week it’s all about Pacquiao/Bradley, apart from a couple of other cards on ESPN2 and TeleFutura. I’m going to eat some linseeds and alfalfa now.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Tim Bradley Undercard

Jorge Arce vs. Jesus Rojas. Like his counterpart Erik Morales, one gets the feeling that Mexican veteran Jorge Arce will provide action for as long as he’s willing to step into the ring and will forever fight up (or down) to his level of competition. The fighting down part of that characteristic is probably the most important for this fight since the main qualification of his op...

Ji-Hoon Kim Toughs Out Decision Over Alisher Rahimov, Vince Thompson Out-Points Joell Godfrey

When pickings are slim on the U.S. fight scene due to cancellations, dramas and whatever other nonsense, fight fans need something a bit more rock solid to cling to when on the brink of starvation.
It's nice having a program to depend on, and Friday Night Fights came through with a little bit of Ji-Hoon Kim action, which by now should probably be designated an official boxing idiom whether he's fighting or not. Kim is the type of fighter that's able to elevate the overall entertainment value of a boxing broadcast, and even when the co-feature is mostly snooze-worthy.
He and fellow lightweight Alisher Rahimov traded shots and took turns executing their respective game plans over 10 rounds in St. Louis, and a difficult to score bout ended with Kim winning by unanimous decision. In said dreary co-feature, undefeated heavyweight prospect Vince Thompson took a wide unanimous verdict over bland should-be cruiserweight Joell Godfrey in 8.

Miguel Buendia Escapes with a Draw at PAP Gloves & Guitars

Just as expected, it was a night of knockouts at the Gloves and Guitars boxing event held at the Fort Worth Convention Center on Saturday night. Thanks to Paulie Ayala Promotions, and the fanatic boxing fans that did attend, it was one of the fastest boxing events that I have ever attended. And that is because the boxers came out to take care of business as fast as they could on this cold night in cowtown.
MAIN EVENT

Migul Buendia (7-1, 4KO’s) v. Fernando Rodriguez (6-9).

The main event proved to be what I expected from the “All Business” Fernando Rodriguez (6-10) against Fort Worth favorite son, Miguel Buendia (7-1, 4KO’s). Before the fight, I knew Rodriguez was no walkover as some may have thought. I knew he was coming into the fight to take care of business and from the outset that is what he did. He started out at the beginning of the first round moving forward and forcing the fight with his boxing skills. That is, using his jab and then following up with his hard righ...

Marroquin Goes Back to Basics in Win at WinStar

Roberto Marroquin had a huge contingent of fans on his side at the Winstar Casino in Oklahoma on Saturday night. He came into this fight on his way to another winning streak, after suffering his only loss of his career about 5 months ago. His young professional record has him with an impressive twenty one wins and fourteen by KO with Top Rank and Bob Arum. Despite that only loss, he is determined to get back to what he expects from himself, and that is to win. He has gone back to the basics, under his new trainer Paul Reyes, the former trainer of world champions Donald Curry and Paulie Ayala. Marroquin followed his script, exactly the way he told it to northtexasfisticuffs several weeks ago. He went back to using his jab, his speed, his height against shorter opponents, and more of the unpredictable left hook. He also said he would be using the uppercut and that is what he used repeatedly against his opponent, Carlos Valcarcel (12-3-4). In addition to that, he also mention...

Will Roberto Marroquin Make the Leap in 2012?

Around the greater North Texas region few people within the local boxing scene feel that Dallas’ Roberto Marroquin is destined to win a major title at some point in his career. In the current hierarchy of North Texas based fighters Marroquin is without a doubt the one fighter who has managed to resonate to some tangible degree with fight fans on a national level. Promoted by boxing powerhouse Top Rank, Marroquin has been prominently featured on a number of major fight cards.
But, despite enjoying a meteoric rise over the course of his career it’s a bit perplexing that the general hype regarding Marroquin has cooled somewhat in the wake of his first, and only, professional loss this past April to Francisco Leal. It’s the great double standard applied to talented pugilists. Go undefeated and people will begin to question who a fighter has fought. Lose a competitive bout and all of a sudden people are in a hurray to declare the fighter an exposed fraud. Hell, it’s a no-win situa...

The Week's Boxing Schedule, Featuring Andre Ward, Carl Froch, Roberto Marroquin, Omar Chavez, ...

The schedule this week is pretty sparse, apart from the one bigsexyhugemouthwatering fight: Andre Ward vs. Carl Froch. Since it's one of the very best fights that can be made right now and we have no idea who is going to win, we'll just have to deal with an otherwise quiet week. There are a fair few good boxers fighting, just not against other boxers of note. Shows and boxers worth mentioning, such as they are, include Marco Antonio Rubio against Matt Vanda, a battle of second generation Mexicans in Omar Chavez vs. Jorge Paez Jr., junior featherweight Roberto Marroquin fighting on FSN/Fox Deportes, Orlando Salido and Hernan Marquez. For once the video on top has something to do with the schedule. Who do you reckon got the best of the staredown? Froch's smugness annoys me an entirely unreasonable amount, so I'm inclined to think that Ward came out on top.
