Weekend Afterthoughts On Sergey Kovalev, What's Next For Mikey Garcia And Gennady Golovkin, More

Felix Verdejo got himself a little HBO shine Saturday thanks to that knockout, via a highlight clip that's rare for such an inexperienced fighter. Also probably because he does have the makings of a future action star, down the line. Also probably because HBO and Top Rank are buddies right now. Top Rank found an easier mark for Verdejo in his second fight than the first time around, which contributed to the knockout. The circle is complete.

Besides the topics in the headline, we'll also revisit Miguel Angel Garcia's corner lobbying for their fight to be stopped, the problem of bad judging and other weekend results.

Next for Mikey Garcia. Garcia's upside as a fighter appears tremendous -- he does everything well and now he's beaten a top-notch opponent in Orlando Salido. Here's what we know about his present: Garcia now has a claim as the best featherweight in the world; it's down to him or Chris John. On one hand, Garcia beat the #1 man, but...

The Week’s Boxing Schedule, Featuring Don George, Carlos Molina, Breidis Prescott And Jose ...

Maybe, as a boxing fan, I’m just a fan of seeing people fall over. That might explain why I find this compilation of people fainting so funny. After rigorous scientific analysis, I’ve concluded that people falling over on their own is comical, but that it’s more satisfying to watch when they’ve been exchanging punches with someone. There’s a bit of punch exchanging to watch this weekend, but not much, and certainly nothing high level.

Carlos Molina vs. Damian Frias, Friday, ESPN2, Miami Okla. Friday Night Fights’ season finale is a bit disappointing. If we’re going to call a spade a spade, the whole season has been, too. At least this week it wasn’t their fault. The show was meant to be headlined by a star-crossed bout between super middleweight prospects Don George (22-2-1) and Adonis Stevenson, which had already been moved from the undercard of the rescheduled Tavoris Cloud vs. Jean Pascal light heavyweight title fight. Now Stevenson has suffered a hand injury and will be rep...

Round And Round, Featuring What's Next For Tavoris Cloud, Marcos Maidana, Danny Garcia And Others

Rarely is the intersection of boxing and religion so unintentionally hilarious. (h/t TQBR unofficial visual consultant Che)Hey, howsabout 50 Cent's TMT Promotions, huh? Starting with a stable of Yuriorkis Gamboa, Andre Dirrell, Andre Berto, Celestino Caballero, Zab Judah and Billy Dib -- with the possibility of Floyd Mayweather, too -- would give them a core comparable to giants Golden Boy and Top Rank. That stable would make their ranking of boxing's most powerful figures here reasonable. What Fitty does with them will be the next important step, though. As we have no idea who those men will be matched with under their new promoter (and some are just speculative adds), we'll feature them in some future edition of this Round And Round column, the place where we take a look at fights in the works, or, in some cases, not. And I don't count Top Rank's Bob Arum talking up the increased likelihood of Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao if Mayweather goes over to TMT. I don'...

50 Cent signs Andre Berto, Zab Judah & Celestino Caballero to TMT Promotions

50 Cent has already brought in a huge haul for his upstart promotional company, TMT Promotions. According to this report from Fight Hype, 50 Cent has signed Andre Berto, Zab Judah and Celestino Caballero. Those three fighters are added to a roster which includes, of course, Floyd Mayweather, along with Yuriorkis Gamboa, Andre Dirrell and Billy Dib. It's another sign that 50 Cent isn't taking this new venture lightly, and TMT Promotions plans to make an immediate splash in the boxing world as soon as possible.
The timing of this shouldn't be viewed as a coincidence, either. Mayweather is due to get out of jail in less than three days. Once he's back in the public eye, you can be sure that he'll have plenty to say about TMT Promotions, 50 Cent and all the rest. Hopefully this all means that news will quickly develop in terms of who and when he'll be fighting next.
Berto could be a potential Welterweight fight for Mayweather, or Berto and Judah could be paired ...

Swimming Upstream: Previews And Predictions For Nonito Donaire Vs. ...

These two fights on HBO Saturday night -- Nonito Donaire-Jeffrey Mathebula, Kelly Pavlik-Will Rosinsky -- weren't on anyone's wish list, but they do serve their purposes. Donaire, one of the best boxers in the world of any weight, and Pavlik, the fallen middleweight champion, get something out of this, and so do we, even if it's nothing likely to send your socks zipping from your feet.Donaire is, at least, inching up the competition ladder at 122 pounds, a division where he's had just one fight, against fringe top-10 Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. The inches are going up in the competition, too; Mathebula is taller than Donaire by a hefty margin, unsual for a boxer who not so long ago looked like Super Mario on mushrooms next to the smaller men he towered over at flyweight, so there's an interesting new competitive element at play and Mathebula poses a test of Donaire's ability to keep moving up against bigger opposition. Too bad the competition is likely to resume a ...

Litzau returns to action Saturday

Former world title challenger and The Boxing Tribune's eighth-ranked super featherweight Jason Litzau (28-3, 21 KOs) returns to the ring this Saturday for the first time since his first round blowout loss to Adrien Broner last June. Litzau will be taking on battered Colorado-based journeyman Corey Alarcon (17-18-1, 4 KOs) at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Minneapolis.

Prior to the Broner loss, "The American Boy" Litzau was riding a career high with back to back upset wins over Rocky Juarez and Celestino Caballero. The one-sided loss, however, stopped Litzau's momentum and led to a stifling year of inactivity.

Alarcon is, well, a 17-18-1 fighter and not expected to offer much resistance. The 34-year-old journeyman is actually the third opponent contracted to fight Litazau, with both Leon Bobo (18-9-1, 2 KOs) and Tyrone Harris (24-9, 16 KOs) pulling through for undisclosed reasons.

No Respect: The Rodney Dangerfield Boxing Divisions

In today’s boxing game, Jr. Featherweight, Lightweight, Welterweight, Jr. Middleweight, and Super Middleweight seem to get the most love from critics and fans alike and rightfully so. Many a big money/big visibility fight are being made at those weight classes whether it be Mayweather vs Cotto, Rios vs Gamboa, anyone vs Lucian Bute, or Berto vs Ortiz.
But as many of you may (or not) know, there are 13 weight divisions, many of which are the darlings of a niche sport while others are the rickety and abandoned old house in your neighborhood which screams to passersby, “Between the hours of 4 pm and 4 am, Meth is cooked here 5 days a week. Please ignore and by all means, do not call law enforcement”. With that, let’s go over these divisions and see who deserves respect and who does not. Please note these are my thoughts and if you do not agree, then go ahead and retort.

Ponce de Leon faces Estrella Saturday

Former junior featherweight world titlist Daniel Ponce de Leon (41-4, 34 KOs) returns to the ring, Saturday against fellow Mexican Omar Estrella (15-3-2, 10 KOs) in a featherweight bout at the Bodega Del Boxeo in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.

The heavy-handed Ponce de Leon, who dropped an eight round technical decision to Yuriorkis Gamboa last September, has been a fixture on the junior featherweight/featherweight world scene since 2004 and has been in the ring with the likes of Gamboa, Celestino Caballero, Juan Manuel Lopez, Gerry Penalosa, Eduardo Escobedo, and Adrien Broner.

The 24-year-old Estrella scored his biggest win to date against equally inexperienced, Sergio Lopez for a minor regional Mexican title in May, but has yet to face an opponent above club-level.

Ponce de Leon-Estrella was originally scheduled to take place in Mexico City befor being moved to Tijuana and then, finally, to Ensenada.
