Chad Dawson vs. Adonis Stevenson preview & prediction

Fight Pick & Preview - "Bad" Chad vs. "Superman" Stevenson:
On June 8, WBC Light Heavyweight Champion “Bad” Chad Dawson defends his belt against hometown favorite Adonis Stevenson at the Bell Centre in Montreal. Dawson is looking to get cooking again as top dog in his weight class after a disastrous attempt to unseat 168-pound kingpin Andre Ward 9 months ago. Stevenson, meanwhile, is in search of his first title.
This is not an easy comeback fight for Dawson--having to come into Montreal to tangle with a very hard-hitting fighter who is on a roll of 7 straight knockouts. Still, if anyone knows how important the issue of weight is, it’s Dawson. He’s back where he belongs at 175, while Stevenson is really a super middleweight looking to make noise in a new division against one of its best fighters.

The great Andre Ward decides to sever ties with the WBC

Rather than becoming the organization’s “Emeritus Champion” and battling the winner of the June bout between Sakio Bika and Marco Periban, The Ring and WBA super middleweight titlist Andre Ward decided to sever ties with the WBC. Ward (26-0, 14 KOs) most recently exited the squared circle in September with a 10th round TKO victory over “Bad” Chad Dawson. A gold medal winner as a light heavyweight at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Ward was injured in November while preparing to scrap retired titleholder Kelly Pavlik. After undergoing the knife on January 4 to fix a small tear in … Continue reading →

Jean Pascal vs. Chad Dawson II preview & prediction

Fight pick & preview: Pascal vs. Dawson Rematch
On May 25 in Montreal, WBC Light Heavyweight Champion Chad Dawson defends against former conqueror Jean Pascal. This fight will be almost 3 years after their first encounter, which Pascal won in an 11th-round technical decision, after Dawson suffered a fight-ending cut just as he appeared to be rounding into shape. It was an upset win for Pascal, one that led to some big fights.
Since that day in August 2010, both Dawson and Pascal fought Bernard Hopkins twice each. The results were all over the place, as illustrated by their 1-1-1 with 1 no-contest combined record against B-Hop. Dawson certainly did the better of the two. Dawson-Hopkins I ended with B-Hop not able to continue after being slung to the mat in the second round--a result that was first ruled a TKO win for Dawson, but later changed to a no-contest. In the rematch, Dawson won a majority decision that should have been unanimous.

Eliminating negativity key for Dawson

As a fighter, a loss is a defining moment in your career. How each fighter reacts to such a devastating blow can mean the difference between success and failure. Chad Dawson shares his mindset following his first loss, as well as the changes he made to be prepared for his title bout against Andre Ward on Saturday night:

As a fighter, you always strive to be the best. So when I suffered my first loss, to Jean Pascal, it was a very disappointing moment in my life and by far the worst memory of my boxing career.

When I saw Pascal's hand raised after the fight, the feeling in my mind, body and soul was demoralizing. I knew I had to get back in the gym and prove to the world that I had an off night, and work my way to get back on top.

I learned a lot about myself and the people around me after that loss. I realized that I had a group surrounding me that was in my circle for all the wrong reasons, not looking out for my best interests, which affected my mindset for the worse. Those days are behind me now, a

Dawson relishing new underdog role

There is palpable excitement for Saturday night's fight between Chad Dawson and Andre Ward (9:45pm, HBO), and for good reason. In the ring will be two young American fighters with impressive resumes and both with realistic aspirations of topping the pound-for-pound list one day. Both can take a big step towards that with a win this weekend.

The oddsmakers have the undefeated Ward as the favorite. Maybe it's because he's never lost. Maybe it's the home-field advantage, with the fight in his hometown of Oakland. It could be the skill he's shown in going 25-0 since turning pro after winning Olympic gold in 2004. It may even be that Dawson is coming down from 175 pounds (light heavyweight) to 168 (super middleweight) to meet Ward, or even more likely, it is because of all of these reasons.

Yet Dawson, 31-1 himself, and coming off a win over Bernard Hopkins, doesn't believe any of those factors will push the fight in Ward's favor.

"It's a lot of motivation," he said of

Ward places title on the line against Dawson

I cannot identify what Chad Dawson's greatest attribute as a fighter is yet because I have not fought him, so that remains to be seen.

There is not one thing that's dangerous about him: He is a good, all-around fighter. His credentials speak for themselves, and when you go into a megafight or a championship fight, you prepare for the best and you prepare for everything. I'm not locked in for one thing; we are prepared for the best Chad Dawson on Sept. 8.

With every opponent and every fight, there are multiple things that you prepare for. And we are prepared for the best of Chad Dawson. We are prepared for anything and everything. If you prepare for anything else than that, you are selling yourself short.

This camp is no different than my past training camps. It's not a cliche; it's the way it is. I don't pick certain camps that I go hard in; I'm always training to the maximum. I feel like every fight, I'm in the best shape of my life. That's the way I think a champion is

Chad Dawson ready for Andre Ward

I decided to take up the sport of boxing because my father was a boxer and he introduced me to the sport when I was 4 years old. He couldn't take his career to the next level because he had a family to look after. I have six siblings, four brothers and two sisters, so you could imagine how tough it was trying to make ends meet for him.

My brothers and I spent a lot of time training in the gym with my dad, and I fell in love with the sport at a young age. Once I started fighting amateur, I really believed I could be one of the best, because it was such a natural feeling for me to be in the ring.

I always wanted to show my dad that I could be a great boxer and one day become world champion. I fulfilled that dream, and I know he's proud of me for accomplishing that goal, because his career got cut short. He always wanted me to succeed as a boxer, and his desire for me to be the best was great motivation.

In high school, I played quarterback and wide receiver and was the starting point guard on the var

Dawson beats Hopkins, takes title

Chad Dawson defeated Bernard Hopkins by a 12-round majority decision Saturday night to win the WBC light heavyweight title.

The 29-year-old Dawson (31-1, 17 KOs) never let a deep cut near his left eye affect his methodical approach at taking out Hopkins.

At 47, Hopkins (52-6-2) may have fought his last fight, though it seems impossible to count him out for another run at the belt.

This rematch was no classic, but it was an improvement on their first bout in October in Los Angeles.

Dawson had his TKO victory over Hopkins overturned and the decision was ruled a no-contest and the belt returned to the Philadelphia fighter. Dawson lifted Hopkins and tossed him to the canvas in that one.

This time, Dawson was the victim of at least one accidental head-butt that busted open a cut near his left eye.

He kept his composure and cranked up the pressure in the later rounds. No fighter has ever knocked out Hopkins and Dawson never came close.

He didn't have to lay him out to win this one.

Dawson vows to finish off Hopkins

Chad Dawson wants what he believes is rightfully his.

He had the TKO victory against Bernard Hopkins.

He had the WBC light heavyweight title in his hands.

Both were stripped from the 29-year-old Dawson before he had enough time to savor his TKO victory against the ageless Hopkins in their October bout in Los Angeles.

Dawson turned the fight into an amateur wrestling match when he lifted Hopkins and tossed him to the canvas late in the second round. Hopkins dislocated a joint in his left shoulder and was unable to continue.

The ref waved off the fight and ruled it a TKO, crowning Dawson the new champion.

Not so fast. After a review because of Dawson's controversial tactics, the decision was ruled a no-contest and the belt returned to the 47-year-old Philadelphia fighter.

Dawson and Hopkins have their rematch set for Saturday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic, N.J.

This fight, ''Bad Chad'' vows to leave nothing up for dispute.

Chad Dawson vs. Bernard Hopkins II preview & prediction

The shake-up of the light heavyweight division will (hopefully) finally be settled on April 28 in Atlantic City, when the ageless wonder Bernard Hopkins meets a man who many thought would once dominate the 175-pound division for years, Chad Dawson. The first bout between these two men ended in controversy, as Dawson threw Hopkins to the canvas and (faked, according to some partisans) injured Hopkins left shoulder.
The referee initially ruled it a TKO2, but that was changed to a No Contest. The two fighters are ranked #1 and #3 respectively by Proboxing-fans.com.

Hopkins May Not Be Ready To Pass The Torch Yet, But Will Dawson Rip It Out Of His Hands?

e
It’s really hard to not be impressed with the forty seven year old WBC Light Heavyweight Champion Bernard Hopkins. They say records are made to be broken, but Hopkins’ record of being the oldest champion in boxing history will be very hard to break, and it looks like it will be secure for years to come.

Last October Hopkins’ title was in jeopardy when faced Chad Dawson in his first defense, which ended in controversial fashion. In the second round of the fight as Dawson got low to duck under a jab from Hopkins, Hopkins continued to move forward and found himself halfway up Dawson’s back. Dawson stood himself up and proceeded to shrug Hopkins off him. Hopkins fell to the canvass injuring his right shoulder and was unable to continue. The bout was originally ruled a TKO victory for Dawson by referee Pat Russell, but the official ruling was later changed to a no contest by the California State Athletic Commission.
Two Months Later, CSAC Overturns Hopkins-Dawson Fight

The holidays came early today for Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins when the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) overturned the decision that dealt the oldest champion in boxing history a controversial technical knockout loss to "Bad" Chad Dawson on October 15 at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. The outcome of the hearing, which took place at the CSAC's regularly scheduled meeting, changed the TKO loss to a no decision on Hopkins' record, leaving no doubt that he is still the light heavyweight world champion.
"Justice was served today," Hopkins said. "I am thrilled that the California State Athletic Commission did the right thing and removed that loss from my record. Mistakes happen, but what you do to fix those mistakes is what counts."
"I'm very pleased that the California State Athletic Commission did the right thing and ruled that the result of Hopkins-Dawson was a no decision rather than a TKO loss ...

Calif commission overturns Hopkins' loss to Dawson

The California State Athletic Commission has overturned Bernard Hopkins' second-round TKO loss to Chad Dawson in October, declaring the bout to be a no-decision.

The commission's move Tuesday means the 46-year-old Hopkins still has never lost a fight by stoppage in his 23-year career.

Referee Pat Russell initially ruled Dawson hadn't fouled Hopkins when he crouched and rose up underneath the leaning champion and shrugged him to the canvas at Staples Center. Hopkins said he couldn't continue after separating his shoulder in the fall.

Dawson already kept his light heavyweight title belt when the WBC returned it to him five days after the fight. The WBC decided the fight was a technical draw.

Hopkins says justice was served by the commission's ruling, and he hopes to fight again early next year.
