John retains WBA featherweight title after a draw

Chris John of Indonesia retained his WBA featherweight title with a technical draw against Japanese Satoshi Hosono on Sunday.

American referee Rafael Ramos stopped the scheduled 12-round bout in the third round after the 32-year-old John sustained two cuts - on the right forehead and left temple - due to a head butt.

It was John's 18th title defense, having earned the belt in 2003 by defeating Oscar Leon of Columbia.

The victory extended his record to 48-0-3 while Hosono's fell to 23-2-1.

In an earlier bout, South African Simpiwe Vetyeka became the new IBO featherweight champion after defeating another Indonesian, Daud Yordan, with a technical knockout just before the end of their 12-round contest.

Weekend Afterthoughts On Sergey Kovalev, What's Next For Mikey Garcia And Gennady Golovkin, More

Felix Verdejo got himself a little HBO shine Saturday thanks to that knockout, via a highlight clip that's rare for such an inexperienced fighter. Also probably because he does have the makings of a future action star, down the line. Also probably because HBO and Top Rank are buddies right now. Top Rank found an easier mark for Verdejo in his second fight than the first time around, which contributed to the knockout. The circle is complete.

Besides the topics in the headline, we'll also revisit Miguel Angel Garcia's corner lobbying for their fight to be stopped, the problem of bad judging and other weekend results.

Next for Mikey Garcia. Garcia's upside as a fighter appears tremendous -- he does everything well and now he's beaten a top-notch opponent in Orlando Salido. Here's what we know about his present: Garcia now has a claim as the best featherweight in the world; it's down to him or Chris John. On one hand, Garcia beat the #1 man, but...

Quick Jabs: Adrien Broner Weight Insurance; Grading 50 Cent As Boxing Promoter; Goodbye To ...

One day, maybe, Gary Russell, Jr. will stop talking about facing top featherweights like Daniel Ponce De Leon, Yuriorkis Gamboa and Chris John, and actually fight them. Until then, we have to live with teases like the latest sensational Russell knockout of a lesser opponent, like that one from the past weekend.

As we head into the next weekend of action, you ought to know if you don't already that the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board has its latest ratings out. Peruse them here.

And then, peruse these thoughts on various boxing news developments in the past week, week and a half. You know what will keep an intelligence/Congress reporter so busy in his day job he can't sleep? Oh, just your garden variety CIA director resignation scandal and Congress coming back right after the election.

Good on Gary Shaw getting his lightweight Antonio DeMarco a deal whereby he'll double his purse if Adrien Broner misses weight Friday, like he did the last time. As much a...

Chris John makes 17th successful title defense

Sampson Lewkowicz, advisor of WBA featherweight "super" champion Chris "The Dragon" John (48-0-2, 22 KOs) sends his warmest congratulations to his fighter for making his 17th successful title defense on Friday night in Singapore.
Fighting on Mahkota Promotions' card at the Marina Bay Sands and live on Australia FOX, John outclassed previously undefeated Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo (44-1, 27 KOs) by unanimous (117-111, 119-109 and 119-109) decision.
33-year-old John won the WBA featherweight title in 2006 against Oscar Leon. This was his sixth defense of his "Super" title. In his illustrious career, John has beaten fellow future hall of famer Juan Manuel Marquez and notable top contender Rocky Juarez.
John dominated most of the action. Piriyapinyo had some good moments in rounds seven and eight, but John took back over after that.
"Chris John is a force of nature. A fighter for the history books," said Lewkowicz. "He is 33 and still dominat...

Top 5 favorite Asian boxing champions of the past decade

The sport of boxing has been known to be dominated by the western world for many generations. Whether it was Muhammad Ali from the United States, Julio Ceasar Chavez from Mexico, or more recently, the Klitschko brothers from Ukraine, the majority of the biggest stars to ever lace up the gloves were from some part of the western world.
However, the sun rises in the east, and the rise of boxing in the Asian world has shown a great uptick over the past few decades. There have always been great Asian champions, but today, the Asian world produces some of boxing's best fighters, and biggest stars.
This is a list of my top 5 favorite Asian boxing champions of the past decade, the names of which, will of course, be quite familiar.

Manny Pacquaio- The ‘Pacman’ is possibly the most significant boxer of this decade. Born and raised out of Bukidnon, Philippines, Manny’s rise to stardom has made him the most popular boxer-politician-figurehead in the who...

The Week's Boxing Schedule, Featuring Abner Mares, Vanes Martirosyan And Wladimir Klitschko

Boxing is back on premium cable, jump in! It's a hell of a week, and you'll need all the help you can get deciding what to watch. There are Saturday night shows on both U,S. premium boxing networks, Vanes Martirosyan vs. Erislandy Lara on HBO and Abner Mares vs. Anselmo Moreno on Showtime. The undercards of those fights, featuring Mikey Garcia and Leo Santa Cruz, respectively, aren't half bad either.

Apart from that there's heavyweight top dog Wlad Klitschko fighting very soon after the death of his trainer and mentor, Emmanuel Steward; top featherweight Chris John fighting in Singapore; and featherweight prospect Gary Russell, Jr. beating up one of the usual suspects.

Abner Mares vs. Anselmo Moreno, Saturday, Showtime, Los Angeles. This fight, which TQBR founder Tim Starks will preview in detail later in the week, is perhaps the best match-up between an exceptional offensive boxer and an exceptional defensive boxer in recent years. There are four...

Antonio Escalante vs. Rocky Juarez set for Oct 27 in San Antonio

It will be High Noon in San Antonio on Saturday, October 27, when hard-hitting Antonio Escalante and perennial contender Rocky Juarez engage in an all-Texas shootout that will headline TeleFutura's "Sólo Boxeo Tecate" from the Freeman Coliseum.
A native of Juarez, Mexico who has become the pride of his adopted hometown of El Paso, Texas, 27-year-old Antonio Escalante (27-4, 19 KO's) is in the midst of one of the best hot streaks of his career, having scored four consecutive knockout victories in the last 12 months. A former NABO super bantamweight champion with world title ambitions, Escalante has taken out Leonilo Miranda and then unbeaten Jose Camacho in his last two fights, but a win over Rocky Juarez will be a major statement to the 130-pound weight class.
There is perhaps no one in the 130-pound division that has faced the level of competition that Houston's Rocky Juarez has faced over the course of a career that began in 2001 after he won a...

Promoter Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing is proud to announce the signing of former world title challenger and IBF #4 (super featherweight), WBA #6 (featherweight) Fernando David "El Vasco" Saucedo (46-5-3, 4 KOs) to a long-term promotional agreement.
A native of Florencio Varela, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Saucedo has only lost one fight (a 2010 decision loss in a world title challenge against the formidable Chris John) since 2004. He is a former Argentinean, South American and WBC Mundo Hispano champion, as well as the current IBF Latino Super Featherweight Champion. Argentinean
Saucedo comes from a fighting family, his father, was a former fighter and his trainer before he passed away.
"It is the dream of every Argentinean boxer to fight for Sampson Boxing and I am very proud to be associated with Sampson and his company," said Saucedo. "I will fight with all-new fire in my heart for the memory of my late father and to show my new promoter h...

What’s next for Nonito Donaire after win over Mathebula?

Nonito Donaire Jr. once again secured his place in the boxing record books as he won a unanimous decision over Jefferey Mathebula and captured the IBF super bantamweight title. As it stands, The Filipino Flash is now the unified Super Bantamweight champion, holding both the WBO and IBF titles.
Nonito’s win against the much taller Mathebula shows he has already grown accustomed to the 122 lbs division, and he has already indicated that he'll be moving up in weight again. However, the question now stands as to what Donaire will do next to improve his career standings. There are really two plausible options for Donaire at this point in time.

Credit: Chris Farina - Top Rank

The first of which is to stay in the Super Bantamweight division to defend his titles. This seems like a very logical next step for Donaire. The two prime candidates that come to mind that could be fitting for Nonito are Toshiaki Nishioka, in a fight where he could reach his stated goal of further unifying his...

Photo credit: Showtime)There aren't many giving Riverside, Calif.'s Josesito Lopez much of a chance to overturn the already set table of his June 23 opponent Victor Ortiz at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in the Showtime Championship Boxing main event. Among those is Ortiz's promoter Golden Boy Promotions, who has a tentative date set in September for Ortiz to move up to junior middleweight and take on one of boxing's few box-office beaus Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in a pay-per-view attraction set for the weekend of Mexican Independence Day. This isn't the first time Ortiz has been setup to win at the Staples Center. Almost three years to the day, featherweights Chris John and Rocky Juarez were set to rematch atop a bill that featured Ortiz against the largely unknown Marcos Maidana in the co-feature. John-Juarez II fell out and Ortiz found himself headlining at perhaps the biggest venue in California. Ortiz was being...

Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing wishes to congratulate his fighter, WBA World Featherweight Super Champion Chris "The Dragon" John, for being awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the World Boxing Association.
32-year-old John (46-0-2, 22 KOs) has defeated the likes of Juan Manuel Marquez, Derrick Gainer and Rocky Juarez while making 15 successful defenses over a WBA-record nine years of being champion.

Boxing’s “Left for Dead” World Champions & Disgrace from the Sanctioning Bodies

I guess I’d be preaching to the converted when it comes to the subject of ‘interim’, ‘regular’ and ‘super’ champion status. We all despise it and even feel ripped off by it. Right? Right. So if that’s how we feel, imagine how the athlete who has been through that ridiculousness, and comes out the other side a World Champion, must feel.
I am a past boxing official, and was a diehard fan, who once preached all that was good about the sport to anyone who would listen. But now I feel compelled to bring to the forefront all that is wrong with boxing, and I do it in the hope that it may spur on change. Yes, I'm a dreamer.
Boxing has always had its problems, but the real absurd thing is that in all other walks of life, problems are usually addressed and attempts are made to overcome them -- but not in boxing. In boxing, they make more, which is the case with ‘interim’ and ‘regular’ champions. One could easily think that the WBC, WBA, IBF and to an extent the WBO are actively campaigning
