Ukrainian boxer dances like crazy after winning

Oleksandr Usyk of Ukraine won the heavyweight gold medal in the Olympic boxing tournament on Saturday night, outlasting Italy's Clemente Russo 14-11. The Ukrainian— who sported one of the most interesting haircuts (half a Mohawk?) at the London Games— literally danced his way around the center of the ring after being announced as the winner. Usyk's astonishingly nimble Cossack-style victory dance had a little Pee Wee Herman mixed in but the fighter is judged in the ring and not on Dancing with the Stars. The 6-foot-3 boxer had reason to kick up his shoes. Usrk is the third Olympic gold medal winner in Ukraine's history joining Wladimir Klitschko and Vasyl Lomachenko. Usyk broke up a close fight with Russo heading into the third round. The much taller Usrk pummeled the Italian with some big shots before taking over the match. There might be a few more Ukrainian jigs in the ring this weekend. The Ukraine boxing team will lead the Olympic field with five medalists. Lomachenko goes fo

Oleksandr Usyk of Ukraine won the heavyweight gold medal in the Olympic boxing tournament on Saturday night, edging Italy's Clemente Russo 14-11.

Usyk is just the third Olympic boxing gold medalist in Ukraine's history, joining Wladimir Klitschko and Vasyl Lomachenko.

Usyk broke open an even bout heading to the third round, punishing Russo with big shots. The 6-foot-3 Ukrainian bruiser then put on an astonishingly nimble dancing display to celebrate his win in the center of the ring.

The Ukrainian team will lead the Olympic field with five boxing medals. Lomachenko will fight for his second Olympic gold Sunday.

Russo won his second straight Olympic silver medal.

Olympic boxing bantam & heavyweight quarterfinals: Luke Campbell, Lazaro Alvarez, Clemente Russo win

Day nine of competition at the London 2012 Olympic Games and the evening session at the ExCeL Arena hosted the action once again with the Men's Bantamweight (56kg) and Heavyweight (91kg) quarter-finals taking place before a capacity crowd.
Cuban southpaw Lazaro Alvarez Estrada, the top seed in the Bantamweight (56kg) draw, faced Robenilson Vieira de Jesus of Brazil in the first of the quarter-finals. The Brazilian orthodox fighter started off furiously, throwing the jab then the quick one-two to impressively outscore the 21-year-old reigning AIBA World Champion.
In the second, the favorite stepped up the pace and looked to impose himself, pummeling his rival with some quality left straights and quick combinations to take a one point advantage going into the second. The third round, saw the Cuban connect again with that straight left with 23-year-old Vieira de Jesus also working hard but Alvarez Estrada had too much in his arsenal as he dominated the final round to win 16:11.
Olympic boxing protests quickly rejected

Siarhei Karneyeu lingered in the ring after his Olympic heavyweight loss, crying and shaking his head in disbelief after his clutching, holding opponent got a narrow victory.

When Cuba's Jose Larduet fell victim to a similar decision about 15 minutes later, the Belarusian came back up the fighters' tunnel and intercepted Larduet on the way out of the ring, holding up Larduet's hand as the real winner.

Both Karneyeu and Larduet felt cheated by their opponents' clutch-and-grab tactics in the Olympic boxing tournament Sunday night, but amateur boxing's governing body disagreed.

After Belarus and Cuba immediately protested the losses, AIBA swiftly conducted reviews Sunday night, rejecting both protests about 90 minutes after the last bout.

Azerbaijan's Teymur Mammadov beat Karneyeu on a tiebreaker despite constantly tying up Karneyeu in the second half of the fight, and Italy's Clemente Russo beat Larduet 12-10 with a similar strategy to close the first round of quarterfinal bouts

Campbell sets off British boxing's medal rush

Bantamweight Luke Campbell clinched the dominant British team's first boxing medal of the London Olympics on Sunday night in a session marred by a series of unsightly heavyweight fights that probably will be decided outside the ring.

Heavyweights Teymur Mammadov of Azerbaijan and Clemente Russo of Italy both clutched, grabbed and held their way through their quarterfinal bouts at ExCel arena, yet both highly ranked amateurs won narrow scoring decisions that surprised fans and enraged their opponents.

The fighters from Belarus and Cuba said they'll protest the decisions in an Olympics already featuring two overturned results.

Amateur boxing's governing body confirmed Belarus has protested Siarhei Karneyeu's loss to Mammadov. Jose Larduet's Cuban coach says they'll protest his loss to Russo.

Olympic boxing previews: Heavyweight & Super Heavyweight divisions

The ranks of the big men always attract attention at the Olympics, and this year's slate of heavyweight and super heavyweight Olympians should provide plenty of action. Each division has three or four superb boxers, plus a slate of competitive, if slightly inferior contenders. Azerbaijan and Italy are particularly strong this year, since both teams are furnishing a top-ranked fighter for the 91 and 91+ kg tournaments.
While London 2012 sees the return of several veteran, career amateurs, there are just as many new faces and professional prospects as well. A few of the names below could very easily be challenging for a world title in three or four years, moving right into the post-Klitschko picture.

London 2012: The Italian Olympic Boxing Team

When boxing fans think of fight-mad countries that consistently produce strong international amateur boxing squads, Italy is usually elbowed out by the United States, Russia, Cuba and others. While that might have been true 20 or 30 years ago, it certainly is not true today.
If you are watching boxing at the Olympics, the Italians are one of the teams to keep an eye on. In Beijing, the Italian squad bagged a gold, a silver and a bronze, and the gold and silver came from the heavyweight and super heavyweight divisions.
