Promoter warns Gennady Golovkin of upset potential against Ishida

As the date of Gennady Golovkin's title fight in Monte-Carlo looms, Golden Gloves promoter Rodney Berman has issued a stark warning to the WBA and IBO middleweight champion: "Underestimate Nobuhiro Ishida at your peril."
Unbeaten Golovkin makes his seventh title defense against the Japanese boxer, who is considered a very large underdog against one of the world's best middleweights, in Monaco on March 30.
Berman's fighters have a remarkable knack for upsetting the odds, none more impressive than Corrie Sanders, who stopped heavy favorite Wladimir Klitschko in two rounds for the WBO heavyweight title 10 years ago. The late Sanders was a prohibitive underdog, but he stunned the doubters with the performance of his life.
Berman also promoted the heavyweight championship fight when Lennox Lewis was knocked cold by unheralded Hasim Rahman inside five rounds in 2001.
One of Berman's earliest world championship promotions saw unbeaten Olympic champion Kennedy McKi...

Top 5 upsets of the last decade in boxing

Boxing is truly the sport of upsets. While unexpected outcomes happen in other sports, they tend to have a certain overwhelming weight of logic to them that makes true upsets a rarity. A lot has to go wrong for the favorite for a true underdog to win a baseball game, and in a sport like tennis the grinding long haul of the match gives a favorite plenty of time to recover from one or two bad missteps.
In boxing, a single punch can alter the flow of a round, an entire fight, or end the fight right there. Boxing is also singularly unforgiving of poor training, lack of focus, or simply having a bad night. Yet even though we see quite a few upsets in boxing vis-a-vis other sports, it doesn't make them any less shocking. Just take these big upsets from the last decade:

Klitschko remembers Corrie Sanders

Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko says late boxer Corrie Sanders made him the fighter he is today, and his 2003 loss to the South African was pivotal in his success.

Klitschko paid a personal tribute to Sanders, who died last weekend after being shot by robbers at a restaurant in northern South Africa.

Speaking to Eyewitness News radio from Germany, the younger Klitschko brother said his second round knockout to Sanders to lose his WBO belt ''changed a side of my character tremendously. It made me tougher and it made me better.''

The current WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO champ says ''the boxing world will remember Corrie as a heavy hitter and a good man. I have nothing bad to say about Corrie at all.''

Klitschko Conqueror Sanders Dead at 46
Former WBO Heavyweight champion Corrie Sanders was shot and killed during a restaurant robbery this weekend, dying after suffering wounds to the stomach and hand. The South African fan favorite and the one-time conqueror of Wladimir Klitschko was 46 years old.
According to the report, Sanders was attending a family celebration, when a robbery occurred at the restaurant. The suspects fired randomly into the crowd, and Sanders was apparently the only victim.
Sanders is most well known for his stunning 2nd round TKO victory over Wladimir Klitschko in 2003. At the time, Klitschko was in his first reign as a titleholder, having made five straight title defenses since capturing the strap against Chris Byrd.
In his next fight one year later, Sanders dropped the WBO belt to challenge for the vacant WBC title, and lost to Vitali Klitschko by 8th round TKO.
He finished with a career record of 42 (31) -4, retiring in 2008 after a first round KO loss. He ...

S. African politician wants answers

An opposition party member in South Africa wants authorities to investigate if world heavyweight boxing champion Corrie Sanders was turned away from a hospital before he died of a gunshot wound.

Jack Bloom, a health spokesman for the Democratic Alliance, said on Tuesday an inquiry was needed to see if Sanders was denied treatment at Pretoria's Steve Biko Academic Hospital because he was shot by armed robbers outside the Pretoria area.

Bloom says ''it is possible'' that Sanders could have been saved if he was treated there. The former WBO champion died at another hospital, which Bloom described as a ''lower-level'' hospital with ''a poor reputation.''

Former world heavyweight champ Lennox Lewis and current titleholders Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko have all paid tribute to Sanders, who died on Sunday.

Former boxer killed by robbers in South Africa

By Anthony Caruso III
The Capital Sports Report
Owner/Managing Editor/Sr. Writer
A former boxer has been shot dead.
Corrie Sanders, who used to represent South Africa when he fought, was shot dead by robbers during a family celebration at a restaurant. He was 46-years-old.
Sanders’ career highlight came he knocked out Wladimir Klitschko, which is one of the biggest upsets in the heavyweight division. He was also a former WBO and WBU champion, as well.
Sanders took bullets to his hand and his stomach, while attending a family member’s 21st birthday party. The incident took place in Brits, South Africa on Saturday night, according to police.
A few hours later, this morning, he passed away in Pretoria.
Three armed men entered the restaurant with the intent to rob the place. Once entering, they shot randomly, hitting Sanders. He was the only individual injured, as there were no other injuries reported.
According to Police Brigadier Thulani Ngubane, the robbers took a cell phone and a bag from a customer. He

Former champ Sanders killed

Former WBO heavyweight champion Corrie Sanders has died in a hospital after being shot in an armed robbery in his native South Africa.

Initial reports say Sanders, who shocked Wladimir Klitschko to claim the WBO belt in 2003, was shot in the stomach at a restaurant in Brits, near the capital Pretoria, on Saturday. He died in the early hours of Sunday.

The 46-year-old Sanders was reportedly attending a family celebration when armed men entered the restaurant in the country's North West province.

Sanders' second-round knockout of Klitschko in Germany was considered one of the biggest upsets in heavyweight boxing. He lost to Wladimir's older brother Vitali for the vacant WBC title the following year.

A southpaw renowned for his hand speed, Sanders retired in 2008 with a 42-4 record.

"Klitschko," Airing Sept. 8 On HBO, Shines A Kind But Still Revealing Light

It is the central paradox of the Klitschko brothers in the United States that so many fans declare so frequently their disdain for the style in which the brothers fight, yet every time a Klitschko appears on HBO of late he does respectable to excellent ratings. Or maybe it’s not a pardox at all. Maybe there are just two kinds of fans: those who discuss boxing in the public sphere (on blogs like this one, on message boards, on Twitter) and don’t like Wladimir and Vitali, and a different group that is off quietly enjoying the two-headed kings of the heavyweight division. That is the one major unexamined phenomenon in the documentary “Klitschko,” a 2011 German film airing Sept. 8 on HBO in advance of Vitali’s latest fight and a fight with its own stylistic detractors, Andre Ward-Chad Dawson. The dearth of heavyweight competition, Vitali’s political career, whether the siblings will fight each other, whether they have the requisite toughness expected of boxers… most every aspect of the...

Wladimir Klitschko’s 5 most exciting fights

In boxing circles, Wladimir Klitschko's name is often synonymous with a good snooze. While he stands as the clear top dog of the heavyweight division, Klitschko the Younger has a robotic, control-and-avoid action style that scores points and wins fights, but fails to move most fight fans to cheering adulation.
Even so, it would be unfair to say Dr. Steelhammer is boring. Prior to the adoption of his risk-free approach, Wladimir Klitschko used his athleticism, size and power to force the action, producing serious fireworks. And before he perfected that risk-free style, some fighters had the stuff to take the fight to the big Ukrainian, also producing exciting fights. All you need to do to find some Klitschko excitement is to rewind the clock a few years, and viola! You find all the fodder you need for a Top 5 list.

Klitschko gets by Chisora by decision

Vitali Klitschko retained his WBC heavyweight belt by unanimous decision over British challenger Dereck Chisora on Saturday.

Chisora found very little support from the sellout crowd of 12,500 after his slap on Klitschko at the weigh-in on Friday, and ensured the ill-feeling continued when he spat in the 40-year-old's face as the champion's record was being called out.

Klitschko was clearly incensed, but it took some time before he could assert control against the 28-year-old Briton's aggressive approach. His greater reach and experience made the difference.

The judges scored it 118-110, 118-110 and 119-111.

Klitschko improves his record to 44-2 (40 KOs) with the 10th successful defense of the title he won from Corrie Sanders in 2004.

Chisora drops to 15-3 (9 KOs).
