Gasquet withdraws from Sydney International

Richard Gasquet has joined fellow Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga as a late withdrawal from the Sydney International.

Tournament director Craig Watson said Saturday that Gasquet had withdrawn for personal reasons. On Friday, Tsonga injured his left hamstring and pulled out of his mixed doubles match at the Hopman Cup, later saying he would have to withdraw from Sydney where he would have been the top-seeded player.

Gasquet was the second-highest ranked player scheduled to play and would have taken the top seeding with Tsonga out.

A tournament official said that American John Isner, who withdrew from the Hopman Cup because of a right knee injury, was still planning to play in Sydney and would be the tournament's No. 1 seed.

The men's draw was scheduled for Saturday.

Tsonga retires with injury, SAfrica beats France

South Africa beat France 2-1 at the Hopman Cup on Friday when Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had to retire in the deciding mixed doubles with a groin injury that later prompted him to withdraw from next week's Sydney International tournament.

Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa beat France's Mathilde Johansson 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 before Tsonga defeated Kevin Anderson 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3) during a match in which the French player appeared to slightly injure his groin while stretching for shot during a rally.

Scheepers and Anderson had won the first set of the mixed doubles 6-3 and were trailing 2-1 on serve in the second when Tsonga indicated that he could not continue. Neither team had a chance of advancing to the final.

Tsonga said he retired as a precaution to ensure the injury doesn't worsen before the Australian Open, which begins in Melbourne on Jan. 14th.

What better way to get ready for the Australian Open than Sydney,” Stosur continued. World No. 8 Tsonga returns to Sydney for the first time since 2009. “For me it’s very important to prepare well for the Australian Open,” said Tsonga. “Playing the Sydney event provides great preparation,” Tsonga added.
