Audley Harrison a disappointing “step up” for Deontay Wilder

For at least the last year and a half, fight fans have wondered when American heavyweight Deontay Wilder was going to take a step up. Wilder was the only medal winner from America's blighted Beijing team, capturing a bronze, and has racked up a 27-0 record since turning pro. None of those opponents has survived to see the final bell, yet none of them was better than a journeyman, and most were mere tomato cans.
In taking on Audley Harrison, Wilder is fighting a "name" opponent at last. Ostensibly, Harrison is serving as Wilder's gatekeeper, the guy who isn't quite a world class opponent himself, but is good enough to keep misfits from rising into the world rankings. The problem is that Harrison has big name recognition, at least in the UK, but isn't much of a gatekeeper.

British Beat: David Price Gets Set To Pension Off Tony Thompson

(David Price, left; Tony Thompson, right)

Briton David Price returns to redesign the heavyweight skyline this weekend in a 10-round non-title bout against Washington D.C.’s condemned chimney stack Tony Thompson in Liverpool. The TNT-fisted Price has cantered through his first 15 starts as a professional; if his whiskers have felt a retaliatory punch in the three years or so he has punched for money, then it can be looked upon as an isolated incident. 41-year-old Thompson, 36-3 (24), can alter that on Saturday for as long as it takes Price to sink his demolition plunger.

Thompson is routinely referred to as a good, world class heavyweight, which tells you everything you need to know about the plight of this once iconic division. After starting out his career as a 28-year-old ham and egger, even he must have been astounded at the lengths his 6ft 5in frame and narrow skill-set could carry him in the 21st century. The gangling portsider’s win column reads like a lost generation ...

The Week’s Boxing Schedule, Featuring Thomas Dulorme, Miguel Vazquez, Karim Mayfield And ...

A strange week on the boxing calendar, with a not-quite-HBO-level HBO show and a whole bunch of lesser stuff, almost all of it on Saturday. Our video this week is some oddly beautiful and appropriately soundtracked slow motion footage of pitch invaders avoiding security guards before a Polish football match. Boxing’s own pitch invasion incident, the fan man, has got nothing on that. To the fights!

Thomas Dulorme vs. Luis Carlos Abregu, Saturday, HBO, Verona N.Y. HBO serves up another prospect-oriented card from upstate New York. It’s strange seeing match-ups of this level on HBO, but I suppose it’s better than no boxing at all. It’s certainly better than the general standard on ShoBox this year. The headlining bout pits Puerto Rican welterweight prospect Thomas Dulorme (16-0) against Argentina’s Luis Carlos Abregu (33-1). The Argentine is a tough cookie, but I’m not convinced he’ll be able to hang with Dulorme, a serious power puncher already being talked about as the succ...

Boxing’s Worst Tattoos, Reloaded: Including Ricky Burns’ Groin And Jonathan Gonzalez’ Face

Has it really been over a year since TQBR took a look at boxing’s worst tattoos? Yes, dear reader, it has. A year doesn’t seem like that long a time, but there are more terrible tattoos out there every day. In this modern age of “Lil Wayne” and “Music Television”, trying to find a boxer without ink is like looking for Twinkies in Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr.'s pantry. So here we go, with five new inky monuments to poor taste.
Jonathan Gonzalez’ Face/Neck
Such was Gonzalez’ embarrassment at the stars tattooed on his face that he pretended that he woke up in the tattoo artist’s chair with no idea what happened. Oh wait, that was an 18 year old Flemish girl. Unlike Ms. Vlaminck, Gonzalez doesn’t seem to realise how breathtakingly dumb his facial “Starry Night” looks. Let’s not even talk about the lips on his neck. Maybe he’s just a really big fan of Keith, Mick and the gang? At least Gonzalez sucked so hard in his last televised fight, against Serhiy Dzinziruk, that we probably

Liakhovich to Wach: Ready for the toughest fight of your career?

Liakhovich Challenges Wach, Looking for September Fight Date
Former world champion Sergei "The White Wolf" Liakhovich (25-5, 16 KOs) has challenged undefeated Polish heavyweight contender Mariusz Wach (27-0, 15 KOs).
Wach's promoter, Mariusz Kolodziej (Global Boxing), recently announced that Michael Grant wouldn't be fighting Wach as previously planned, and they are searching for an opponent to fight in September. Liakhovich feels that he is a perfect gatekeeper for Wach, who is rated No. 4 by the World Boxing Council (WBC), to test himself against.

"I took a few months off from boxing and now I'm ready to comeback fresh," Liakhovich explained. "In my last fight (March 24 loss to Bryant Jennings), I made a critical mistake underestimating my opponent. What drives me in this sport is a real challenge. It gives me that fire that all fighters need; the feeling of danger that pushes a fighter to do better. I admit...

Huck, Dimitrenko, Steiglitz fight Saturday

The Messehalle in Erfurt, Germany plays host Saturday night to an intriguing bill headlined by the WBO cruiserweight rematch between Marco "Captain" Huck and Britain's Ola Afolabi. The chief support features two European heavyweight prospects, Alexander Dimitrenko and Kubrat Pulev, who'll be contesting the vacant EBU title.

Huck (34-2, 25 KOs) is reprising his December 2009 first WBO title defense, when he handily defeated Afolabi over 12 rounds. This time he's making the ninth defense of the strap, just three months after an abortive assault on Alexander Povetkin's WBA heavyweight title (of sorts), when he swapped punches on pretty much even terms with Povetkin but was narrowly out-scored.

Huck, 27, picked up some plaudits for his brave effort against Povetkin, and the fight was a barn-stormer, if woefully lacking in quality. He'll drop 10 pounds in weight to renew hostilities with Afolabi (19-2, 9 KOs), who has gone 6-0 since their last outing, and has looked like a fighter i

Sturm stops Zbik to defend title

WBA middleweight titlist, Felix Sturm (37-2-2, 16 KOs) made the 12th consecutive defense of his title, beating former WBC middleweight titlist, Sebastian Zbik (30-2, 10 KOs) via RTD 9.

Sturm, now 14-2-2 in three separate reigns as a world titlist, took little over a round to decipher the stiff, predictable style of his opponent and then assumed full control by the third round.

Zbik did what he usually does, work behind a solid jab and sound fundamentals, but he lacked the flexibility to make adjustments when Sturm adapted.

With lesions over and under the left eye and likely well behind on the scorecards (down 6 rounds to 2 on the unofficial Boxing Tribune scorecard), Zbik's corner waved off the contest before the start of the ninth round.

On the undercard, Russian heavyweight Denis Boystov (31-0, 25 KOs) scored a one-sided unanimous decision over journeyman, Dominick Guinn (33-9-1, 22 KOs) by scores of 100-90, 100-90, and 99-91.

Wladimir Klitschko vs. Tony Thompson II preview & prediction

The domination of the heavyweight division by the Klitschko diarchy lurches forward on July 7, when Wladimir Klitschko defends his all-but undisputed world title in a rematch with the IBF's #1 contender, Tony Thompson. Dr. Steelhammer has what looks to be an ideal foil in the form of Tony the Tiger, because Thompson matches Klitschko in the size department, he is in no way in the same league as Klitschko the Younger.
This promises to be another easy win for the division's top dog, but one that is at least more visually entertaining than Klitschko's past outings. For that reason, fans craving some big man action should tune in and watch two 250-pounders slug it out.

Liakhovich: My experience will be too much for Jennings

At 35 years of age, former WBO heavyweight champion Sergei Liakhovich, 25-4, 16 KOs, has been around the boxing block a few times. However, the mileage he has logged in the ring figures to be his biggest advantage in his next fight. Liakhovich will take on the younger and perhaps hungrier Bryant Jennings, 27, in a 10-round heavyweight contest on the latest edition of the nationally televised "Fight Night" boxing series on the NBC Sports Network, March 24th from Brooklyn, NY. The broadcast begins at 10PM ET.
"The biggest problem for him will be my experience," said Liakhovich.

And that experience is formidable. He had an all-star amateur career with a 145-15 record and numerous titles, trophies and medals to his credit. As a professional, Sergei has met top heavies like Lamon Brewster, Shannon Briggs, Nikolay Valuev, Dominick Guinn and Maurice Harris. Liakhovich did not beat them all, but he learned valuable...

Eddie Chambers vs. Sergei Liakhovich Preview & Prediction

Can “Fast” Eddie Chambers box circles around former WBO heavyweight champ Sergei Liakhovich in front of his hometown crowd?
On January 21, 2012, the Asylum Arena in Philadelphia, PA will be the site of the first segment of NBC Sports Network Fight Night which will feature a ten round heavyweight bout between “Fast” Eddie Chambers and former WBO heavyweight champion Sergei Liakhovich in the main event.
This fight features “Fast” Eddie, who uses his elusive boxing skills to jab and counterpunch his way to most of his victories, while the other guy, Sergei “White Wolf” Liakhovich, is a straight-forward boxer puncher who likes to give as good as he takes. However, after an extended break from the sport and a loss in his return, some feel that Liakhovich’s all-action boxing style has left him past his best.
Both of these fighters definitely need a win in this fight to stay relevant near the top of the division, so will elusiveness or aggressiveness win the day on January 21, 2012?

Undefeated Heavyweight Amir Mansour Continues Comeback from 8 Year Prison Stint

Mansour vs. Mendoza: Don’t Blink!

When Amir Mansour and Epifanio Mendoza square off for the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) Intercontinental Heavyweight title on Saturday December 2 at the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino in Dover, Delaware, it is one of those fights where the spectators better keep their eyes open at all times.

It is almost a certainty that somebody is going to get knocked out!

Southpaw-banger Mansour, 15-0 (11), has created quite a buzz recently and is widely considered one of the most exiting heavyweights around, but at age 39 time is not on his side. Nicknamed “Hardcore”, he turned professional in 1997 and compiled nine straight victories before being incarcerated for eight-and-a-half years between 2001 and 2010.

But while he spend all those years in prison, Mansour never stopped training, and eventually he walked out the prison gates in the same excellent shape as when he walked in. One of the first things he did as a free man was return t...
