Once a champion, Edwin Valero died a murdering thug

Former two weight world champion “El Terminator” Edwin Valero committed suicide after being imprisoned for slaying his wife three years ago last Friday on April 19, 2010. A 28-year-old Valero (27-0, 27 KOs) admitted to Venezuelan authorities killing Jennifer Viera in a hotel room in the city of Valencia. Roughly 24 hours later, Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela Federal Police Chief Wilmer Flores reported “El Terminator” used clothing to hang himself at police lockup in North Central Carabobo State. Long a bloodthirsty loon and domestic abuser, Valero descended into a homicidal maniac at a time when he was being considered as … Continue reading →

The Truth About Andre Berto

Andre Berto never was or will be what HBO tried to make him out to be....

Though the carefully maneuvered prizefighter has been a mainstay on the airwaves of the premium pay network for around six years, there is a truth about him that has taken that length of that time to emerge.

His gaudy speed and seemingly heavy hands were promising to everyone at first glance, but petty annoyances built up among the fighting fan base... Little things, like his penchant for barking with every thrown punch; he thuggish sneer he liked to put on his face; and certainly at times the sycophantic fandom that HBO announcers seemed to shower on him.

None of these things in and of themselves would have been too grating were it not for the fact that nearly all of his showcase spots on the HBO Boxing After Dark series came against undersized has-beens beyond their best years and weight classes.

What Berto’s loss to Robert Guerrero this past Saturday underlined again, in the third great ...

ATLANTIC CITY -- Adrien Broner clearly is sitting pretty after a big win over Antonio DeMarco Saturday night. But this pretty?

"If the press isn't ready, I will crown him the next Floyd Mayweather," DeMarco's promoter Gary Shaw said at the post-fight press conference.

Later, Broner's promoter Oscar De La Hoya upped the ante. "He's Mayweather, (Bernard) Hopkins, and myself," De La Hoya said, "all wrapped up into one."

It's a bit too early to go that far, in my view, as impressive as the performance was and as much as Broner has the look of "the future of boxing" about him. But Broner, making a magnificent entry into the lightweight ranks, said he was thinking of a couple people at 135 pounds: Ricky Burns (De La Hoya: "It's very possible. That fight has already been discussed") and Juan Manuel Marquez.

Broner was in quite the quipping mood, and naturally he insists it's all spontaneous. On wh...

The four fighters featured on Saturday night on HBO, Adrien Broner, Antonio DeMarco, Seth Mitchell and Johnathon Banks, all took part in a media roundtable this week ahead of their respective fights this weekend. Take a look at what each man had to say about their fights, their training, visiting the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City and more.
ADRIEN "THE PROBLEM" BRONER, Undefeated Former World Champion
[On visiting the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City on Wednesday.] "It's very important to have an affect on kids. I'll do anything to make a kid's day better.
"As my career is going on, I'm starting to become a lot more of a busy man.
"Once someone sees me on TV, they always think that 'he is just a cocky brat,' but I'm not. Once you get to sit down with Adrien Broner, you will fall in love with me. I don't want the world to dislike me in any way. I just want you accept me.

Spectacle, Substance: Adrien Broner Vs. Antonio DeMarco Preview And Prediction

All of Adrien Broner's preening with brushes, all of his talking in the third person, all of his weight-missing antics and Twinkie diet boasts, all of his stunts like in-ring faux marriage proposals -- it's all amusing enough, or magnetically enraging enough, or both, and it's all a part of who he is, and it's no small part of what makes him captivating, and it's no small part of why he's one of HBO's ratings darlings. But what the hardcore boxing fans have most wanted from him is to test his sublime speed and power truthfully. No more fringe contenders, no more televised mismatches. We know who Adrien Broner, the spectacle, is. We want to know who Adrien Broner, the boxer, is.

Antonio DeMarco is the answer Saturday night in Atlantic City.

And it's hard to conceive of a bad answer. If Broner creams a sturdy, determined, lightweight upon his entrance into the division, someone who's like a blown-up, better version of his last authentic chal...

The Blood Is The Life: 25 Of The Worst Gashes In Boxing, Part I

Jim Watt TKO12 Sean O'Grady, 1980

Sean O'Grady is likely best known for boxing commentating and interviewing on FoxSports and USA's Tuesday Night Fights in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but once upon a time, he was actually a fighter -- certainly not a bad one, but he struggled against just about anyone with any sort of discernible class. And against WBC lightweight titlist Jim Watt, his skin gave in to the old stereotype about Irish boxers' skin -- that is, that it spews forth crimson when even gazed upon. By most accounts, O'Grady was doing quite well against Watt before the stoppage, pounding left hooks to the champion's eyes and drawing first, second and third blood by way of three gashes around Watt's eyes. But the WBA title wasn't in the cards.

The AP said from Glasgow via the Plain Dealer, "Then, in the 10th, a dramatic change of fortune left O'Grady bleeding profusely from a severe cut low on his forehead, just above t...

Antonio DeMarco To Defend WBC Lightweight Title vs. John Molina September 8

Big Joe MirandaThe Oracle Arena in Oakland, California will be the site of the Antonio DeMarco vs. John Molina bout on Saturday, September with DeMarco’s WBC Lightweight Championship on the line. This has all the ingredients of an excellent high-energy bout as both fighters like to throw their hands and stay as active as possible every round. DeMarco, who hails from Tijuana, Mexico, goes into the bout with a 27-2-1 record with 20 KOs. Molina of Covina, California also has a fine resume with 24 wins against just 1 loss and 19 KOs.As you can see, both of them have quite a lot of power and this could lead to some fireworks in the ring. DeMarco impressed boxing fans around the world when he stopped Jorge Linares in the 11th round back in November 2011.DeMarco was trailing on the judges’ scorecards even though DeMarco was landing some damaging shots to the head of Linares. DeMarco then picked up the pace even more in the championship rounds and showed a fine killer instinct by stopping Linares when he had him i

Only Gangnam Style can do justice to how full the boxing schedule is this week. If you’re not as excited as the guy pelvic thrusting over Psy’s head, then you’re not a real boxing fan. Though you are permitted to show your excitement in a non-pelvic manner, if you so choose. The week’s offerings, almost all clustered together on Saturday night, include an HBO tripleheader with two lineal champions, Andre Ward and Chad Dawson, at the top of the bill; Tomasz Adamek and Steve Cunningham fighting at heavyweight on the same card in Jersey; a plethora of smaller fights; and the premiere of the warmly received Klitschko documentary on HBO.

A Pole, a Kazakhstani, a Puerto Rican and a Ukranian walk into a casino in upstate New York, and...There's no punchline to that, actually. And whatever the odd confluence of circumstances bringing the four men together at Verona's Turning Stone Resort & Casino, there's nothing funny about the main event on HBO Saturday when Gennady Golovkin of Kazakhstan and Grzegorz Proksa of Poland square off in a quality match-up that, hopefully, heralds the start of a fall boxing season that on paper eclipses the rest of 2012's seasons so far.Golovkin is something of a cult figure, a gym legend with astounding power who doesn't exactly fill up the stands in more favorable locales like his current residence of Germany, as exemplified by this clip of Golovkin fighting in a facility about the size of a bathtub housing two whole rows of spectators. Proksa, like Golovkin, is one of the surprisingly deep middleweight division's emerging talents, and like Golovkin also has b...

Who will replace Juan Manuel Marquez as the lightweight king?

Lightweight: A Division in Transition

When, in November of last year, Juan Manuel Marquez opted to enter the ring and go face to face with his long-time nemesis Manny Pacquiao for a third time, he was considered the best lightweight in the world. He had turned back the likes of wily Cuban southpaw Joel Casamayor, relentless Australian puncher Michael Katsidis and tenacious Texan brawler Juan Diaz. His second defeat to Pacquiao was tinged with controversy, many felt Marquez had won.
With revenge in his heart, the Mexican legend fought on with a low-key light welterweight bout earlier this year, hoping a fourth installment of the Marquez-Pacquiao opera would be on the horizon come the end of 2012. It now looks like the man we know as “Dinamita” will be making his vacation to higher weights a permanent stay. It leaves the 135 lb weight class in a transitional state. When better than now to take a look at the future of this historic division?

3 punch combo: Broner vs. Guerrero on Twitter; DeMarco vs. Molina could be Fight of the Year

In this week’s 3 punch combo we will first examine a hypothetical fight between Adrien Broner and Robert Guerrero who traded shots with each other on Twitter last week. Next we will look ahead to the Antonio DeMarco-John Molina fight in a couple weeks that could contend for the Fight of the Year, and finally, we'll look closer at Carlos Molina who turned in a solid performance this past Friday.
Broner-Guerrero Twitter Battle

This past week, Adrien Broner and Robert Guerrero waged a war of words on Twitter. The Twitter feud, which has now become a boxing tradition of sorts, had me consider what would actually happen if the two were to step in the ring together. In my opinion, such a match up would be very beneficial to Broner and work to the detriment of Guerrero.
At this stage in his career, Broner needs to step in the ring with a name opponent. After he just squeaked out a controversial decision victory over Daniel Ponce De Leon in March 201...

Antonio DeMarco vs. John Molina preview & prediction

On the undercard of Andre Ward vs. Chad Dawson, Antonio DeMarco defends his WBC Lightweight belt against top contender John Molina. It’s the featured fight on the undercard and has a good chance to upstage the main event in terms of entertainment value. Both fighters typically make for exciting fights and with the stakes so high, fans should anticipate fireworks.

Date: September 8, 2012
Site: Oracle Arena, Oakland, California
TV: HBO at 10:15 p.m. EST
Titles: WBC Lightweight Championship: 12 Rounds

Antonio DeMarco, 27-2-1 (20 KOs), Tijuana, Mexico, WBC Lightweight Champion

DeMarco’s status as a dramatic fighter was solidified in his blood-pumping 11th-round TKO of talented Jorge Linares in November of 2011. Linares was handling DeMarco, well ahead on the scorecards. But DeMarco’s sharp shots had begun rearranging Linares’ facial features.
On the night of May 7, 2005, a few friends and I huddled in front of the television set, our fists clenched, hearts pumping, and voices wavering as we watched Diego "Chico" Corrales and Jose Luis Castillo fight in the proverbial phone booth. Forehead to forehead the two gladiators stood, ripping each other to the body and head, each punch thrown with malice of forethought, with intent to injure and maim -- to kill if possible.

Castillo, with the more famed punch resistance, took Corrales' shots better. And with each uppercut he landed between Corrales' gloves we watched as Corrales' head snapped back, and without taking a step back Corrales came right back to dish out his own punishment. Castillo took everything "Chico" had to offer, and gradually broke him down, sending him to the canvas with a counter left hook to the chin only 30 seconds into the 10th round.

Corrales made it to his feet and was granted a moment to have his mouthpiece put back in by trainer Joe Goossen. &qu

Lullaby League: The 12 Hardest Swatters Of The Last Dozen Years

******* This Ring Magazine online... article suggests otherwise. However, likely the most spot-on idea in that piece is Joe Goossen's take on the failings of today's amateur boxing system, which slaps swollen pads onto guys' mitts and instructs referees to stop fights at the first sign of danger -- a system that tends to value good, quick-handed athletes rather than fighters. But consider that many of the fighters who seem to horde television dates fight with similarly defensive-minded styles, and they don't fight as often, or in front of crowds as big, as many of the known knockout dealers of the past. In general, the frequency issue means (or should mean) fewer fights against out-matched opponents more easily leveled, and the style issue is pertinent in the sense that spiffed up performances with more flash than bang are rewarded with television dates, and guys from other eras often weren't afforded the same luxury. And some of the big punchers of yesterday didn't have the high

Lullaby League: The 12 Hardest Swatters Of The Last Dozen Years

It's as though we can't get a solid chunk of good fights lately, and the up and down fluctuation plays hell with a fan's patience and emotions. A more consistent fight schedule would be nice. It's part of loving this game, though, and sometimes a hiatus from constant action makes the heart grow fonder. Indeed, there have been times when the the thirst for blood long since sated nudges us into viewing a bout in a more positive light than perhaps it really calls for. For instance, the one-sided (but solid) Hank Lundy vs. Dannie Williams bout from a few weeks back on Friday Night Fights wasn't bad at all. In fact, a few times the men traded and made for a very fun watch, and there was a knockdown. But it was a mostly one-sided fight, yet it still got a fair amount of attention, and still wound up making for good discussion. There will always be jubilant, adrenaline-driven peaks, and heavily depressing valleys. Just like there will always be clinching, as we&#3...
