Brazils’ Falcao brothers, both Olympic medalists, join APB

London 2012 Olympic Games Middleweight (75kg) silver medalist Esquiva Florentino Falcao and his brother Yamaguchi, a Light Heavyweight (81kg) bronze medalist in the British capital, have both signed up and committed themselves to compete at the World Level of the AIBA Professional Boxing (APB) program.
Two stars of the World Series Boxing (WSB) season one, Esquiva and Yamaguchi both made their marks in the competition representing the Mexico Guerreros with distinction. Both really suited for the pro style, these two talented boxers have all the attributes to make it to the very top. Their addition to the APB ranks will only help elevate the status of the project even further, with two of the most recognizable faces in Brazil set to attract a whole new legion of fans.
23-year-old southpaw Esquiva claimed the Olympic silver medal earlier this year after his sensational run in the tournament saw him reach the final, defeating tough Azeri Soltan Migitinov, accomplished Hun...

Russia's Mekhontsev wins gold

Russian boxer Egor Mekhontsev won the light heavyweight gold medal on the second tiebreaker Sunday, squeaking past Adilbek Niyazymbetov of Kazakhstan in the men's Olympic tournament.

The fighters finished level at 15 points apiece, and the countback tiebreaker -- which evaluates larger parts of the judges' total scores -- also was level. The five judges then voted for their choice, and Mekhontsev claimed Russia's only boxing gold in London.

Mekhontsev was the world champion heavyweight in 2009, but moved down one weight class for London.

Niyazymbetov again finished as a runner-up, his same spot in last year's world championships.

Olympic boxing draw results: Who & when Team USA boxers are fighting

Fight Times & Opponents for USA Boxing Members
The 2012 London Olympics boxing draw was held on Friday afternoon. This is crucially important, as it determines which fighters are facing one another in the early stages of the tournament. Quite simply, an underdog could theoretically skate past the toughest competition until the medal rounds, or alternatively, be stacked up against one of the big guns early on, making his or her road that much more challenging. With the draw for the Olympic boxing tournament completed, here's a run down of who and when the Team USA boxers are fighting.
Quick notes

Three US Olympic boxers have first round draws - Men's flyweight Rau'shee Warren, women's flyweight Marlen Esparza and women's middleweight Claressa Shields
The United States is represented in 12 of 13 divisions

Olympic boxing previews: Middleweight & Light Heavyweight divisions at London 2012

The London 2012 Olympics sees many new faces in the middleweight (75 kg) and light heavyweight (81 kg) divisions. Of the eight boxers who won medals in these two divisions in Beijing, only one has returned for another run at Olympic glory. Some veterans turned pro, some were dethroned, some met with personal tragedy, and others merely retired.
The result is a wide-open field, but not one totally devoid of talent or experience. Neither the 75 kg or 81 kg divisions are especially deep this year, but each has a few very strong boxers. If those boxers should meet, expect sparks to fly.
Middleweight Olympic Boxing Overview

Vjinder Singh of India: Singh was India's first boxing medal-winner in 2008, and this year he is the veteran Olympic medalist in the middleweight division. The 6-foot, 26 year old boxer is making his third trip to the Olympics, and won a bronze in Beijing. His edge in experience plus his confidence as an Indian sports start are enough to make him a se...

Olympic boxing previews: Heavyweight & Super Heavyweight divisions

The ranks of the big men always attract attention at the Olympics, and this year's slate of heavyweight and super heavyweight Olympians should provide plenty of action. Each division has three or four superb boxers, plus a slate of competitive, if slightly inferior contenders. Azerbaijan and Italy are particularly strong this year, since both teams are furnishing a top-ranked fighter for the 91 and 91+ kg tournaments.
While London 2012 sees the return of several veteran, career amateurs, there are just as many new faces and professional prospects as well. A few of the names below could very easily be challenging for a world title in three or four years, moving right into the post-Klitschko picture.

Women boxers step into Olympic ring

The door to the last remaining boys club in the Summer Olympics finally opens in London.

Three dozen women are about to punch it into smithereens.

Women's boxing is an Olympic sport for the first time, with 36 fighters in three weight classes competing to make history with its first medals. A sport long derided as a sideshow by elitists has been hotly competitive for several years, and the debut Olympic tournament is expected to bring worldwide attention and cachet to boxing, which has slipped into secondary status after decades as a main Olympic event.

Boxing joined the Olympic program in St. Louis in 1904, but was the only Summer Games sport without a female analogue until 2009, when the IOC added a women's competition to the London program. Supporters had argued for the addition for several years.

New worlds suddenly opened for athletes like Katie Taylor, the lightweight world champion who also plays on Ireland's national soccer team, and Queen Underwood, the five-time American champion who

Top USA Boxing medal contenders & hopefuls

Heading into the 2012 London Olympic boxing competition, the United States is sending one of the largest squads in the field. They will be represented in nine out of 10 men's weight classes, tying them for the 2nd largest team.
The USA boxing team is a mixed group consisting of experienced amateurs and others still just getting their feet wet in the sport. Having such a large squad is certainly a good thing, but it offers no assurances of frequent trips to the medal stand.
That said, there is reason to be optimistic about this year's USA boxing team and their chances at the London games. Certainly, they figure to do better than the meek 1 (bronze) medal performance at Beijing in 2008, and if things shake out in their favor, they could bring home a respectable medal haul.
Here's a look at some of the top medal contenders and hopefuls for USA Boxing at the 2012 London Olympics.

Meet the Top Ranked Ukrainian Boxers for the upcoming summer Olympics boxing tournament
The Ukrainian Olympic boxing team at London 2012 is loaded. There may be bigger teams in terms of membership at the summer Olympics boxing tournament - the USA boxing team has 9 members, for instance - but there may not be any other squad out there with the potential to bring home as much winning hardware.
At the 2011 World Championships, the Ukraine boxing team brought home a staggering four gold medals, plus a silver for good measure, out of a total of 10 weight classes. Not too shabby. In addition to those five men, two more Ukrainian boxers made the cut for the Olympic lineup.
Here's a complete look at the Ukrainian boxing team for the London Olympics. Don't forget to check out our Olympic boxing homepage for more in-depth, exclusive coverage.

Cuban Boxing Team for the 2012 London Olympics

The Cuban Olympic boxing team at London 2012 is stacked, per usual. It features 8 members, making it one of the bigger squads in the London Olympic boxing tournament, although showcasing one less team member than the United States, which has 9.
Cuba has the richest amateur boxing history of just about any nation, and therefore it's no surprise that they're locked and loaded for another huge medal haul, despite a string of defections from top fighters pursuing professional careers.
Cuba's boxing performance at the 2008 Beijing Olympics was actually disappointing -- to a degree. They won four silvers and four bronze medals, but failed to capture any golds, a rare blemish.
However, the Cuban boxing team performed very well at the 2011 World Championships, taking home two gold medals and one silver. Additionally, the only member of their current squad which hadn't already qualified for London did so at the American Qualifying Event by handily winning gold in his weight ...

Team USA Boxing for 2012 London Olympics

United States Boxing Team at London 2012
With the conclusion of the AIBA American Olympic Qualifying Event, the United States boxing team has a total of 9 team members headed to the 2012 London Olympics.
This gives USA Boxing the second largest squad, trailing only Australia, which has a full team of 10 members. Kazakhstan is tied with the United States with nine Olympic boxers. The only weight class which the United States will not be competing in at the 2012 London Olympics is Light Flyweight.
The US boxing team is therefore deep, but is mixed in terms of experience, as well as international credentials. Still, after the dismal showing at the 2008 Beijing games, there seems to be promise of an improved medal haul in 2012. Here's a quick rundown of all nine USA Boxing teammates headed to the London 2012 Olympics.

London 2012: The Russian Olympic Boxing Team

Including its Soviet athletes, Russia traditionally sends a strong boxing squad to the Summer Olympics. The Beijing Games were no exception, with the Russian team picking up two golds and a bronze in 2008. Although none of those past medal winners are going to London this summer, Russian amateur boxing has such a deep talent pool that their Olympic squad can sport plenty of new faces and remain a formidable challenge for any comers.
If the strength of the Russian team is not enough of a reason to follow the Russians at the London Games, Russia's stature in the professional ranks ought to be. Ever since Kostya Tszyu emigrated to Australia in 1992, the Russian National Boxing Team has served as a springboard for many notable fighters. Beijing's team sent Rakhim Chakhkiyev and Matvey (Matt) Korobov on to prospering careers as professionals, and London 2012 could send many more.
