Marcus Upshaw plans to upset Marco Antonio Rubio this weekend

Marcus "Hurelius" Upshaw (15-8-2, 7 KOs) has returned to Mexico, seeking revenge on Saturday night for his last fight south of the border, against two-time world title challenger Marco Antonio "El Veneno" Rubio (56-6-1, 49 KOs) for the vacant World Boxing Council Continental Americas middleweight title.
Upshaw is a true throw-back fighter, who will really fight anybody, anywhere, anytime. The 32-year-old Floridian has done just that throughout most of his seven-year professional career, earning a reputation as a dangerous opponent who has made a reputation for pulling-off major upsets.

"If I'm in the gym and in good shape," Upshaw said, "I will fight anybody, anywhere, even on short notice. My problem was I'm a very late starter. I didn't get going until the fourth, fifth or sixth rounds. It just took me a few rounds to get going. I like to adjust to my opponents' style to decide what style I need to use.
Somehow I overlooked that fine illustration of Floyd Mayweather being frightened by prison food a several days back when it appeared in The Las Vegas Review Journal. Only when I was tweeted it by @LoNeRaNgEr100 did I notice it, so we made it the boxing tweet of the week over at our Facebook page. I have mentioned our Facebook page, no? Today we had a poll and stuff. Please, go like us. It's getting ugly, me soliciting in this manner. The best way to measure a man's worth in raw numbers, not the motion of his ocean, and while we do not take for granted what love you've given us, we want more, more, more.In this edition of Quick Jabs we'll hit the subjects in the headline, but also touch on the latest performance enhancing drug news as well as Nevada's investigation into the fishy result for Timothy Bradley-Manny Pacquiao. Then, a few hours later, we'll be back with Round and Round to discuss some fights in the works. So soak this in now, and return in a bit to...

Sat. roundup: Freitas, Shumenov win

Acelino Freitas (39-2, 33 KOs) proved that a world-class fighter, eight years and three weight classes beyond his best, is still better than a prime, over-hyped club fighter as he tore right through fellow Brazilian Michael Oliveira (17-1, 12 KOs) en route to a TKO 9 win at the Hotel & Casino Conrad in Punta del Este, Uruguay.

The former lightweight and super featherweight world champ, thick and stubby like a fireplug, took control from the opening round and never let go, landing just about every power shot flush on the face of Oliveira.

Freitas dropped "The Brazilian Ricky" in the third round and then twice in the ninth before the ref waved off the contest. The overmatched Oliveira, who aggressively pursued this bout with the retired boxer-turned political leader, had no defense, no effective offense, and no answer for anything presented to him.

-- Beibut Shumenov (13-1, 8 KOs) made the fourth defense of his WBA light heavyweight title with a unanimous 12-round decision over Enrique Ornelas

World Boxing Association (WBA) and International Boxing Association (IBA) Light Heavyweight World Champion Beibut Shumenov (13-1, 8 KO's) battered a game Enrique Ornelas (33-87, 21 KO's) from the opening bell en route to dominant victory by unanimous decision at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Shumenov revealed after the fight that he had injured his right forearm 10 days ago during a sparring session. It didn't prevent him, however, from pitching a complete shutout, winning each round on all three judges' scorecards in the 12-round main event. Shumenov was the aggressor, throwing hard rights to the head and body, especially effective were his well timed uppercuts.
Ornelas was unable to counter Shumenov, who threw powerful combinations and then avoided Ornelas' late counters. Shumenov, a 2008 Kazakhstan Olympian, lives in Las Vegas and his fourth successful title defense was at the same venue in which he first captured the WBA crown...

Back in the 1990s, the WBO was slow to receive recognition as a "real" sanctioning body -- and that's saying something in the often skeezy world of professional boxing. The reason for the snub was due to the sanctioning body's perceived "friendly" matchmaking for its title holders.

When it comes to sketchy matchmaking, a finger could be pointed at the WBC, WBA, and IBF as well, but the WBO was especially well-known for its ability to find unqualified "top" challengers for dodgy champions in every rec center, third-rate gym and regional club circuit in the world.

Throw in the shoddiest record keeping in the industry (the WBO once ranked deceased super middleweight Darrin Morris in its top 10 -- and even bumped him up in ranking twice, post mortem) and you get some especially rotten calls, even among the filthy four of boxing's sanctioning bodies.

Over time, the Puerto Rico-based outfit cleaned up a bit, but lately it's been returning to form -- with its fellow s

Rubio to face Vanda Friday; Chavez looms

WBC No. 1 middleweight contender Marco Antonio Rubio (52-5-1, 45 KOs) takes on Minnesota's Matt Vanda (44-13, 24 KOs) this Friday at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas as part of the WBC's 49th annual convention.

Mexico's Rubio, who is 9-0 with 8 KOs since losing a February 2009 bout with Kelly Pavlik, stopped Canadian prospect David Lemieux in seven rounds earlier this year to become the WBC's mandatory top contender. In his 11-year career, Rubio has been in the ring with the likes of Lemieux, Pavlik, Kassim Ouma, Grady Brewer, Jose Luis Zertuche, Rigoberto Alvarez and Enrique Ornelas among others.

Vanda, whose career highlight is a near win over in 2008 Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and a unanimous-decision rematch loss four months later, has lost four of his last six bouts. However, the rugged club fighter from St. Paul has only been stopped once in a 15-year career that has featured bouts with Chavez, Peter Manfredo Jr., John Duddy, Yori Boy Campas, Sebastien Demers and Anthony B
