Nonito Donaire vs. Guillermo Rigondeaux preview & prediction

Fight Pick & Preview - Donaire vs. Rigondeaux:
On April 13 at the famed Radio City Music Hall, Nonito Donaire takes on Guillermo Rigondeaux to determine the identity of the top dog at 122 pounds. This is unquestionably the best fight at Super Bantamweight since at least 2000, when Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera went at it in a memorable war.
This fight represents big things to each man. For Rigondeaux, this is his chance to crash the party of the those who occupy the top-level of the sport. For Donaire, a win surely tips his career into Hall of Fame-worthy status. For fans, this is an increasingly rare opportunity to see the top two men in the weight class decide who is number one.

Fight Preview: Donaire vs. Nishioka
In a hardcore boxing fan’s delight, PFP stalwart Nonito Donaire takes on longtime 122-pound standout Toshiaki Nishioka of Japan at the Home Depot Center on October 13. Any argument as to who is the world’s best junior featherweight comes down to three men--Donaire, Nishioka, and Guillermo Rigondeaux. The winner of this fight will become the de-facto top dog at 122. Rigondeaux will still be there with a claim, but in terms of ring accomplishments, Donaire and Nishioka are already ahead of the Cuban star and a win here puts one of them clearly at the pinnacle of the division.

Official Donaire-Nishioka, Rios-Alvarado announcement & details

The Super Powers of the junior featherweight and the junior welterweight divisions will do more than flex their muscles when they battle for supremacy, mano a mano, in a sensational night of championship boxing. Top-Five pound for pound fighter and four-division world champion Nonito “Filipino Flash” Donaire will risk his junior featherweight world title against fellow super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka .
And in the second main event, former world lightweight champion Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios will take on No. 1 contender “Mile High” Mike Alvarado where undefeated records and world rankings will be at risk.
These four gladiators boast a combined record of 131-5-4 (86 KOs) -- a winning percentage of 94% with 2/3 of those victories coming by way of knockout.
"History shows there is only one way for a fighter to make the leap to stardom and that’s by accepting the challenges and risks like the ones Donaire, Nishioka, Rios and Alvarado committed to on October 13. They a...

The Week's Boxing Schedule, Featuring Wladimir Klitschko, Joan Guzman, Fernando Montiel And ...

Just like Blake Anderson, we're nice guys at TQBR. So nice that we bring you the schedule even when there's virtually nothing on. Not unless you're a Klitschko beatdown enthusiast/German, which is pretty much the same thing anyway. The younger Klitschko is fighting former cruiserweight Jean-Marc Mormeck, who really has no business in the ring with him. Serial fat man Joan Guzman continues his junior welterweight “comeback” on ESPN on Friday, while slightly faded junior featherweight Fernando Montiel eats Jorge Arce's Indonesian leftovers in the form of Angky Angkota. Nasi goreng is probably tastier. Other happenings include junior lightweight fringe contender Vicente Escobedo fighting on TeleFutura and Pongsaklek Wongjongkam fighting in his first mismatch of 2012. What an occasion.

Donaire comfortable, ready at 122

Saturday night's fight (HBO, 10 p.m. ET) against Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. for the vacant WBO super bantamweight title will be the first time Nonito Donaire fights at 122 pounds.

Considered one of the sport's top pound-for-pound fighters, "The Filipino Flash" says after having to put some strain on his body to move up from his previous weight class of 118, he's feeling great in this camp.

"I'm not even making weight," he explained. "It's actually almost at my walking weight. I feel great. It's natural for me to be in this weight. I'm very comfortable at this weight class. There are pros and cons in being comfortable. He's going to be bigger than I am in this weight class, but I know I'm going to be much more comfortable going into that ring because it's more of a natural weight."

After his knockout of the year win against Fernando Montiel on Feb. 19, 2011, Donaire's most recent fight was against Omar Narvaez on Oct. 22. Navarez went into

BoxingWatchers.com Top 10 Pound For Pound Boxers: End of 2011

With another year of in-ring action in the books, it was once again time for the Boxing Watchers to put their heads together to formulate some kind of consensus on the top 10 pound-for-pound boxers on the planet. The key word is "once," since we only do this at the end of each calendar year. The thinking behind doing it annually is that we don't want to overreact to each big victory or loss by a top pugilist. If we updated monthly, or heaven forbid, even more frequently than that, we'd run the risk of having guys slide around on the list so much that it would start to lose its meaning.Or would it? It occurred to me while compiling this list that there hasn't been that much movement even though it's been 12 months since we last did it. Pac-Man, Money and Maravilla are still up near the top. Wladimir Klitschko and Timothy Bradley remain in the bottom half. A few boxers who dropped off the list since last January (like Juan Manuel Lopez and Fernando Montiel) deserve it since they were fo

BoxingWatchers.com 2011 Knockout of the Year: Nonito Donaire TKO2 Fernando Montiel

We may wait until the very last minute around these parts, but rest assured the Boxing Watchers eventually hand out year-end awards just like every other sports site on the internets. We're kicking things off with our Knockout of the Year, and we'll progress on to the Fight of the Year, Fighter of the Year and our top 10 pound-for-pound list (which we do only once a year) over the next few days. There's always an inherent hazard of recency bias in looking back over the whole boxing slate from 2011, because more recent fights naturally tend to stick in our minds. Hopefully we're avoiding that pitfall by going all the way back to February for our most memorable stoppage, which was Nonito Donaire's short night against Fernando Montiel.

Going into that fight, there were plenty of reasons to think Donaire might have his hands full. It was only his second fight at 118 pounds, and though his frame was plenty big enough for that weight class (and probably higher ones as well), we weren't 100

201 Boxing Knockout Of The Year: Nonito Donaire - Fernando Montiel

There was an element of the cartoonish about what Nonito Donaire did to Fernando Montiel's face in the 2nd round of their Feb. 19, 2011 rendezvous. You can imagine the artists and writers at a Warner Bros. storyboard session, coming up with a scenario where, during a zany bit of fisticuffs, one 'toon caves in the face of another 'toon, perhaps with an anvil hidden in his glove.Only Donaire's weapon was not an anvil; it was a left hook that the Filipino bantamweight used to dent the face of the Mexican he had flirted with fighting for more than two years. By the time they finally met, both had ascended to just outside the upper ranks of the sport, and it was that punch that finally heralded Donaire's undisputed arrival as one of the best fighters in the world not just based on raw talent, but because of what he did with it. It was an awe-inspiring shot, not unlike the one that put him on the map to begin with -- his 2007 KO of the Year against Vic Darchinyan.Yet a...

2011 Boxing Knockout Of The Year Nominees

Welcome to The Queensberry Rules' annual year-end awards, starting today and continuing throughout the week. Here's how we do it around these parts: The major categories are Knockout of the Year, Round of the Year, Fight of the Year and Fighter of the Year. The final leg is a pu-pu platter of awards ranging from Trainer of the Year to more frivolous topics. For each category, I give five finalists, with video and/or relevant info. You tell me if my finalists and honorable mentions are lacking, and give your vote on who you think should win. Maybe you sway me to adjust the list, and maybe you sway me on the eventual winner. On the second day after a category is introduced, I give that winner and explain why. (There are no major fights left in 2011, but we reserve the right to change our category winners if something crazy happens.) So, up first: Knockout of the Year and Round of the Year candidates. On deck: Knockout of the Year and Round of the Year winners, ...
